Nine
Wayne uttered a noise of disbelief. "We thought you were dead! That the Coissons killed you!" Dr. Coisson chuckled. "The Coissons? No, never. They're the reason that I lived this long!" His merry eyes quickly saddened. "But they're dying out. These six? They're the only ones I could find, and they're all female. Unless we find a male, their entire race is going to become extinct when these ones die."
The crew was shocked. Quince was the first to find his voice. "But what happened to Marty?" He asked. Dr. Coisson squinted at him. "So you read my log, eh? Well, I wondered how you knew to follow the Coissons." He got up with difficulty, and reached for a walking stick that seemed to be made of a long bone. Noting their stares, he explained. "This was a bone from a carcass that the Coissons found on the ocean floor. I didn't kill it myself." He walked over to the nearest tide pool, and sat down with his legs in the water. The Coissons swam towards them, and he petted their heads. He pointed to the black one that had led them in.
"I thought that this one was a male when I first saw it, so I named her Marty, but I quickly realized that it was a female. She loves to go out at night and look at the stars, so I named her Galaxy." He pointed to a golden one next.
"That one was a bit catty at first. All of the others liked me, but she only warmed up to me eventually. So I named her Cat." He pointed to the next one, this time a light brown Coisson with a slightly upturned snout.
"This one just looked like a pig, so I named her Pig. And it seems to suit her." He moved on to the hazel one.
"That one reminded me of my daughter, so I named her Briana."
The next Coisson, a dark brown one, swam up to them, trying to get the doctor to pet her. So he did, explaining its name at the same time.
"I called this one Genesis, because she was the first I found in this cave after Galaxy, hence Genesis."
And the final Coisson, a chocolate brown one, perked up her ears when the doctor said her name.
"I called this one Christian, because I was remembering random facts about different religions to pass the time, and she barked when I said the word " Christian."
Liza looked around at them all. Galaxy, Cat, Pig, Briana, Genesis, and Christian. All different personalities, but they were all the same species. Sort of like people.
