Four
Rachel sat beside Quince. They'd never really been close, exactly, but she had to admit, she had a bit of a crush on him. When she had first seen the geologist, she had thought that he might make a good friend. But she seemed to be noticing certain details about him. The way he pushed his hair out of his eyes. The way his face lit up when he talked about rocks. The way he laughed, and, most of all, the way he smiled at her.
She shook her head. What was she thinking? He was a patient, she was a doctor. She had to do something to help him.
Rachel rummaged around in her backpack again, this time pulling out a roll of waterproof bandages, and some medical tape. She sat him up, and wound the bandage around his head, securing it with the medical tape. Then she sat back.
And waited.
Shortly after, Jay and Cinnamon returned. "Where are Liza and Wayne?" Asked Cinna. Rachel shrugged. "They said they were going to check out the Carolina. But they're not back yet." Just then, the hatch opened, and Liza and Wayne climbed down the ladder into the pod. "Well, now that everyone's here," said Rachel, turning to Jay and Cinnamon, "what did you find?"
Jay smiled. "An abandoned base."
Liza stared. "What?" Jay nodded. "Looks like we're not the first ones to be here. And the base is well-equipped. There's enough food and water to last us at least a week." Rachel gestured to Quince. "We'll have to wait until he wakes up. We're not leaving him behind." Wayne frowned. "How long do you think that'll be?" He asked. Rachel shrugged. "Probably another few hours at most. A couple minutes at least." Liza nodded. "I can deal with that."
Cinnamon thought for a moment. "In that case, should we go back to the abandoned base and retrieve some of the food that we found?" Rachel nodded. "Good idea." "But what did you find?" Wayne asked. "A bunch of cooked fish." Jay replied. "Alien fish with names I've never seen before. Peppos and Greyfish and pieces of a plant called a Meepvine."
Wayne chuckled. "How are you sure that's what they're called?" "These scuba masks are really high-tech, in case you didn't notice," answered Jay. "They have a small window that pops up in the corner of them when you look at something from this planet that has a name. It tells you the name, and what it does. Super helpful."
Wayne nodded, although he looked a little skeptical. "Alright, I'll take your word for it," he said. Jay grinned as he donned his scuba mask again. "Glad we got that cleared up." He and Cinnamon climbed out of the roof hatch again, and dove into the surrounding ocean.
