Chapter 50: Exams Pt 2
I might just update daily until the book is complete.
The practical exam happened on the next day. I could feel the nerves and anticipation tingling in the air as we all waited outside of UA for the teachers in front of us to say anything. Every teacher who taught at UA was lined up in front of us, staring us down. I fidgeted slightly in my place. It had been quiet for too long. I was about to burst when Dad finally spoke up. "As you can see, all of the teachers who currently serve at UA are stood before you, there is a very simple reason for this." Dad paused and looked around at us all, "You will be fighting us for the practical exam.". At my Dad's words, there was an outburst from the class. Several people shouted how it wasn't fair and that they couldn't expect us to win. I was inclined to agree. The youngest hero (Thirteen) had at least 12 years of experience on us. How was it fair to pit us against people with so much experience? The onslaught of angry outbursts continued for some time until Papa finally put an end to it with a shrill whistle. "Quiet! Nezu will explain!" He shouted. Everyone went silent and watched as the principal emerged from Dad's capture gear.
"The format of the exam is very simple. You will all be placed into pairs and then placed into a battlefield. You will all be on the same battlefield at the same time but will be starting from separate places. The goal is the glass skyscraper in the centre of the city. You can see it from over the entire city. You will have 60 minutes to get to the centre. Your teachers will be roaming around trying to prevent you from getting to the centre. You may only encounter one hero, you may encounter multiple, or none. There are two courses of action you can take when facing a pro. You can tag them, or you can escape. When you tag a pro hero, they will be out for 5 minutes. To tag a hero you must touch the hero's circular badge which will be on display clearly. Every hero will be wearing these cuffs which add half their body weight to themselves. It should level the playing field. Now, are there any questions?" Nezu explained before looking up at us inquisitively. Nobody spoke up for a few minutes before Sero raised his hand. "Umm... how exactly do the tags work?" he asked, he nervously fiddled with his helmet. "Excellent question! When a hero hasn't been tagged, the tag will be blue. Once touched with any foreign object, the tag will turn green." Nezu explained. Sero nodded, satisfied with the answer. Dad coughed to clear his throat and gain our attention before whipping a notebook out of nowhere. "I will be deciding who you are paired with. I would just like to add to the Principal's instructions that you are prohibited from leaving your partner behind, but you are allowed to team up with other pairs. Here are the pairs. Kaminari and Ashido, Uraraka and Aoyama, Koda and Jiro, Asui and Tokoyami, Sero and Shinso, Hagakure and Shoji, Iida and Ojiro, Midoriya and Yaoyorozu, finally Todoroki and Bakugo." Dad explained. I didn't mind being paired with Yaomomo, she was a good fighter and strategist. There was only one problem. She lacked confidence which could be very dangerous in the hero world.
The bus ride to our starting point was spent in silence. Yaomomo was sat at the front of the bus reading through her book desperately, her eyes scanned page after page seeking information which could help her in our high stakes manhunt. I could see how nervous she was, but I didn't know what to do to help her. I was a bag of nerves myself. I could feel my hands sweating and hear my heart hammering as nerves tingled through my body. The prospect of having to go up against pro heroes was a daunting one. I'd practised with Dad, Papa and my Aunties before, but there were no stakes in that. We were just training and messing about. If I fought my family in the exam, they wouldn't be messing about, they would actively trying to stop me.
"Yaomomo. We have 10 minutes before the exam starts. We should formulate a plan." I said to my friend as we watched the self-driving bus rumble down the dirt road. She nodded her head and hugged herself. I recognised it as Yaomomo's way of comforting herself when she got too stressed or worried. "Yes, I agree. You're a good strategist, you should form the plan. I feel as though I would only inhibit you." Yaomomo whispered brokenly. It physically hurt my heart to see such a strong, powerful girl whittled down due to her lack of self-esteem. She was so capable and yet her doubts stopped her from seeing her potential. "That's not true, Yaomomo. You're a great strategist. Better than me. I need you so that we can form a good plan. You're great Yaomomo, you've helped so many people. You helped me when I was having a panic attack. You've been there for Shoto. You helped a bunch of people in our class study for the test. You are a powerful, beautiful and amazing young woman. All you need is a little confidence and you're going to get that confidence when you beat all the pros asses." I shouted in encouragement, grasping the girl by the shoulders gently. Momo looked shocked at my speech. Her mouth hung agape and her eyes were as wide as saucers. Soon her wide onyx eyes filled with tears and she began to sob daintily. "Oh! Thank you Izuku! That's so sweet of you to say. I guess I have been putting myself down but I know I'm just not as good as you, or Shoto or Katsuki. Even Ochako and Kyoka are better than me. " She cried pulling me into a hug. Now, I'm sure I've mentioned this before, but Yaomomo is a lot taller than me. 17cm to be exact. So when she pulled my head to her chest as she hugged me, you could imagine how awkward it was, what if her costume design and all. Even though my face was burning and I was ever so slightly uncomfortable, I stuck it out so that Yaomomo could gain some comfort. "You really shouldn't compare yourself to others. You should focus on being you. Making you better. It's fine to look for inspiration in others, but you should know that you're amazing. A lot of people look up to you. You're amazing so don't doubt it." I reassured her once again. She nodded through her tears and stepped back. She apologised for crying on me, to which I dismissed her apology, and wiped away her tears. After that, we came up with a plan. We formulated a plan for each teacher. It wasn't airtight, but it was a plan.
"Start!" A robotic voice echoed around our starting point. Yaomomo and I were immediately off, I transformed into a horse and she jumped onto my back. We ran for a few minutes before Yaomomo spoke up. "Deviant, that rubbish bin looks big enough to use." She whispered in a hushed voice so that we didn't alert any teachers who could have been in the area of our presence. I chanced a glance back and saw that Yaomomo was pointing at a rubbish bin, with a big enough object in sight, we moved on to stage two of our plan to get to the centre as fast as possible.
"And you're certain this won't tire you out?" Yaomomo asked hesitantly. I nodded my head resolutely as I placed my hands on the disgusting green metal of the rubbish bin and picture what I wanted it to be in my head. I was very familiar with what I wanted it to be. After all, I had stared at pictures of it for hours on end. The metal of the bin morphed slowly into a sleek motorcycle which had a leather seat and a gleaming silver frame. The model of the motorcycle was particularly useful in Yaomomo and I's situation because it made practically no noise. I had seen it in one of Dad's old magazines as a child and had become infatuated with it. I couldn't own one and had only ever seen one once in real life prior to the exam, so I couldn't help but stand in awe as I looked lovingly at the motorbike of my dreams. "Deviant, now isn't the time to space out!" Yaomomo chastised plopping a helmet on my head. "Right! Sorry, Creati!" I apologised as I adjusted the helmet on my head and climbed onto the motorcycle with Yaomomo behind me. She seemed slightly hesitant, but she placed her hands delicately on my shoulders and squeezed them to confirm she was ready for us to speed away. I revved the engine before we were off, flying through the streets on our way to the giant glass spire in the centre of the city.
I honestly believe we could have made it to the centre of the city within the first 10 minutes if we hadn't been confronted by Cementos. Our encounter with him was quite sudden. We were halfway there and the exam had been going on for 5 minutes already when a huge concrete wall suddenly erected in front of us. I nearly didn't have time to bring the bike to an abrupt stop. We were centimetres from colliding with the wall, and that wouldn't have been pretty. "Very initiative thinking, young ones." a mellow voice commented from only metres away. Yaomomo and my heads whipped looked around to see our teacher standing there, looking at us amused. We had to act fast to be able to escape Cementos. He was one of the most dangerous opponents to face when in a cityscape. He could control practically everything around him. Yaomomo was quick to react. A bunch of cylinders popped out of her arm which I snatched out of the air and pulled the pins out of. I threw them at Cementos and turned away as a bright flash went off. I placed my hands on the ground and let the rush of adrenaline I felt power me as I transformed all of the concrete within 10 metres (32.8ft) of Cementos into grass and other plants. With no immediate way to defend himself with his quirk and still partially blinded by the flash grenade, Cementos could do very little when Yaomomo lept forward and hit the big blue button on his chest. The button beeped and flashed for a second before turning green. I sighed in relief and stood up from my crouched position, ignoring the slight ache in my elbows and knees. "Well done Creati." I congratulated Yaomomo as we hopped back onto the motorbike. "It was mainly you." She whispered bashfully. I shook my head as I pulled my helmet on, "No, I couldn't have done it without you. You're doing amazingly." I beamed back her before revving the engine and driving around the large concrete wall which had obstructed our path.
Three-quarters of the way to the glass skyscraper and it seemed like we were in for an easy journey. That wasn't the case. We knew something was coming when the air around us turned pink. I could feel myself getting drowsy even though I was wearing a motorcycle helmet. I stopped the motorbike since driving it whilst under the influence of Auntie Nemuri's quirk was the epitome of idiocy. Yaomomo looked more alert than me, but she still looked a little slow. She didn't speak, simply pointed to the ground. I nodded and lied on my stomach. The gas was less dense closer to the ground, so it was ever so slightly easier to breathe without passing out. Two gas masks popped out of Yaomomo's leg which I quickly fitted onto my face. Immediately, I regained my senses and nodded thanks to Yaomomo. We knew that we couldn't ride the motorbike anymore and I didn't want to risk transforming into an animal since Auntie Nemuri's quirk could still affect me and I doubted a gas mask designed for a human would stay on my face. (Not canon, but it's my story so I make the rules). We could still see the top of the skyscraper, so we had a general sense of where we were supposed to go. We cautiously made our way towards the tower, keeping our ears and eyes alert for any noises or shadows in the hazy rose mist in the air. After a few minutes, the air around us was getting less and less pink and we could actually see each other clearly. I thought we had managed to evade her, but Auntie Nemuri wasn't letting us go so easily. "Oh, how delectable! Two people managed to make it through my mist." A sultry voice practically purred from atop a car a few meters in front of us. Auntie Nemuri was sprawled on the roof of a car. She held a classic whip in her hand which lazily flicked from side to side as if it were her tail and she was a cat. Yaomomo and I crouched and got into fighting stances, we were sure to keep our gas masks on so that if she released more of her sleep-inducing scent. Nobody moved for a solid 30 seconds. Everything was silent. Then a whip crack resounded around the area around us and I felt a stinging pain on my wrist. I looked down to see that Midnight's whip was wrapped around my wrist. I didn't get much time to digest this information before I was being dragged towards Auntie Nemuri, she was surprisingly strong for having such a lithe body. Acting as fast as I could I drew my knife and severed the whip with one slice. As a result of the tension of the rope suddenly disappearing, both Auntie Nemuri and I went flying backwards, although Auntie Nemuri was sent flying further. She landed in an undignified heap on the floor, groaning slightly and grumbling. She was just standing to launch another attack when her button was hit with a baseball. Yaomomo looked immensely proud at herself for being able to pitch a ball so accurately on the first try, it seemed as if luck was on her side that day. We quickly ran away together before the 5-minute timer on Nemuri's button could expire.
I'm not sure if you've ever seen a husky pulling a person on roller skates along, but it's an odd sight. Well at least I assume Yaomomo and I looked a bit peculiar as I bounded down the street towards the skyscraper with a rope around my stomach and Yaomomo skating behind me holding said rope. We were awfully close to the skyscraper. I could see the doors, but suddenly I was a human again. I yelped as I tumbled forward, which in turn made Yaomomo lose her balance. I was quick to get on my feet and draw my knives. "Look out Creati, Aizawa Sensei is around here somewhere." I whispered to her urgently, looking around frantically for my dad. It was very hard to determine where he was. My dad was an expert at moving through the shadows and stealth. If he didn't want to be seen, we wouldn't see him. He was like a fucking ninja ( which is pretty cool). I was scanning the surrounding area when I saw a minute movement out of the corner of my eye. I didn't hesitate in throwing my knife in that direction. I saw a shadow flinch backwards and knew immediately that it was my dad. I transformed into Shoto and tried to freeze Shota but he jumped out of the way in the nick of time. "Creati, the doors are insight. Let's run!" I called to Yaomomo. She nodded and started skating towards the doors since she was still wearing her roller skates. I was quick to follow, there was no point in my transforming into anything since Dad could just erase my quirk.
Yaomomo had reached the doors when I felt something wrap around me, binding my arms to my body. My eyes widened as Shota yanked me back towards him. Once you had been ensnared by my Dad's capture gear, it was nearly impossible to get out of his hold. "DEVIANT!" Yaomomo called in a panic. I looked up at her and smiled slightly. I wanted to reassure her that she could get me out, but I could see the uncertainty in her eyes and her body language. We wouldn't pass the exam unless both of us passed through the glass doors of the skyscraper. "It's alright Creati, just trust your instincts!" I yelled as I was dragged further and further towards the shadows of an alleyway. I knew that once I was surrounded by the darkness, it would be incredibly hard to pass. My father would make sure of that. I struggled fruitlessly against the capture weapon. I trusted Yaomomo, but she didn't trust herself which could cause some complications. I was only a meter away from the shadows in which my Dad dwelled when Yaomomo took action. "Close your eyes!" She yelled as she barrelled towards me at full speed. I wasn't sure what was about to happen, but I did as she ordered and closed my eyes. Not even a second later, there was a bright flash which even I could see from behind my eyelids. I could feel the capture weapon around me go lax, indicating that my dad had been blinded and wasn't on guard. Blindly, and only following my instincts, I spun around and raise my right foot onto the capture weapon. Shota's balance was offset by me standing on the weapon. He stumbled forward, still blinded, out of the shadows and into the light. I didn't hesitate. I leapt forward and pushed the button on his shoulder, rendering him incapacitated for the next 5 minutes. "Well done, Creati!" I jumped up and hugged my friend. She smiled shyly and nodded her head towards the unguarded glass doors. "We should quickly get in, we don't know if another Pro is waiting to jump out at us.". I nodded my head and ran beside Yaomomo to the glass doors which marked our victory.
"You've passed!" A robotic voice buzzed as soon as we passed through the doors. Yaomomo and I beamed at each other as we finally allowed ourselves to relax slightly. "Please make you're way up to the view deck where Recovery Girl will tend to any wounds you have." the voice beeped. Yaomomo and I followed the voice's directions to the lift which took us to the very top of the building. When we entered the open planned room, we saw that we were the only people there. "It looks like we finished first." Yaomomo whispered. I nodded and looked around the room. There was a 360 view of the city. I could see battles raging both near and far from the tower. I saw a few floating rocks, obviously Ochako's work. A glacier erupted followed by a chain of explosions, Shoto and Kacchan's work. I saw a few buildings collapsing in my peripheral view and felt unease settle in my stomach. Who could have caused such damage? "Well done you two!" Recovery Girl smiled at us from by the window. Yaomomo and I walked over to her and sat in the chairs which were by her. "You completed the exam in 28 minutes. The rest of the class have 30 minutes until they all automatically fail. I expect they'll start flooding in at any moment. Look Asui and Tokoyami just came into the building." Recovery Girl told us. Yaomomo and I settled into our seats and waited for the exam to be over.
*Katsuki's POV*
We were nearly at the skyscraper. I could see the doors which would guarantee our victory. 30 minutes of the exam had passed and Icyhot and I were nearly finished. "Katsuki, can you feel that?" Todoroki asked. I tutted at him and looked around. I was guessing that what Icyhot was referring to was the atmosphere in the air. It was like we were being watched from every possible angle. There was only one pro capable of that. "We need to run, Ectoplasm is onto us," I whispered so that only Shoto could hear. He nodded and created an ice path for him to skate down. It was a direct path to the door. We were heading towards the path at a rapid rate, it was unlikely that we would be stopped. That was until those shitty clones of that shitty teacher popped up out of nowhere. "Keep on this path, shit head! I'll blast away these fucking nuisances!" I gritted out to Shoto. He nodded his head in understanding. I spun around and started blasting away all the clones whilst still propelling myself towards the glass door. " Bakugo! Grab on!" Todoroki yelled, holding out his hand for me to grab onto. Ordinarily, if it were any other shitty extra, I would have slapped their hand away. But it was Shoto. I had developed a good friendship with him. I would never admit it of course, but he and the 'Bakusquad' were nearly as close to me as Kyoka and Izuku. Nearly. I grasped his hand and he pulled me backwards, out of a clone's reach and directly into the door. My head smacked against the door. Hard. I stumbled backwards cursing before I was dragged in by Shoto. "You've passed. Please go to the view deck." a robotic voice beeped from unseen speakers. Shoto and I followed the voice's instructions and emerged onto the view deck from the lift.
"Kacchan! Shoto!" a familiar squeaky voice called before a small body barrelled into both of us. I looked down at the green ball of fluff hugging me. "Hey, Izu." I smiled gently down at him. Izuku smiled up at us and then let me go so that he could just hug Shoto. I'm not going to lie, it hurt a little bit. It was like my brother didn't care about me. But I knew that thinking that wasn't fair. Izuku still cared about me. It was clear in the way he spoke to me. The fact that he still hugged me. The fact that he hung out with Kyoka and me without Shoto being around. It made sense for me to be a little jealous, after all, I grew up with the boy. The feeling I had was akin to when Kyoka first started dating that bastard Akashi. I knew that Shoto wouldn't hurt Izu like that. I trusted him. I wouldn't say that out loud though.
*Izuku's POV*
Kacchan and Shoto finished their exam in 32 minutes. They sat with Yaomomo, Asui, Tokoyami and I whilst we waited for the rest to finish. Kacchan told us about his and Shoto's fights. They got to fight All Might! Apparently, they had only gotten past him because they were forced to hide in an alleyway to evade him, Kacchan wasn't happy about that. Shoto had to hold him back from trying to fight the unwinnable fight. In turn, Yaomomo told them of our fights. I had to interject several times to give her credit for things she was to shy to admit to. The whole time, Shoto's hand was clasped firmly in my own. His thumb rubbed soothingly over the back of my hand, it tickled. It wasn't long until the rest of the class began to swarm into the room. I didn't think Kami and Mina would make it but they managed to get into the glass doors with 2 minutes to spare. When they made it up to the viewing deck, everyone could see they were covered head to toe with dust. Nobody questioned it at the time though. We were all too exhausted.
"Well done on all passing the practical exam. Since you all passed, you will all be going on the training camp in a week time. Today is Friday so you have the entire weekend to relax and wait for your academic scores to come back on Monday. Then you will have the week to prepare for camp before we leave next Friday, understood?" Dad asked. Everyone nodded. Once we were dismissed, everyone sighed in relief. We had passed the practical exams.
Not sure how this got so long but here we are. Something I liked about this chapter is how Izuku tries to boost Momo's confidence. It seems like a very Izuku thing to do.
There are 5 chapters left of this story. Anyway, thank you for reading chapter 50 of Occurrence and I hope you have a wonderful day wherever you are.
