Chapter 49: Exams
I've already finished writing this book so I'll probably just post chapters randomly until I've finished posting.
A week breezed past in what felt like minutes. Every evening was spent revising with my friends and revising on my own deep into the night. Kacchan and I had a bet on whether one of us would be able to knock Momo and Iida from the top two spots. I said neither of us could and that we should be content with 3rd (Kacchan) and 4th place (me). But Kacchan has ego problems so he said that he could easily beat at least one of them. We both put ¥6534 on the bet. Kacchan was pretty confident in his ability to outrank one of the two. It made me slightly nervous, but I didn't let him see that.
It was the day before the academic exams would begin, and I was eating lunch in the cafeteria. I was eating with the usual crowd of people; the Bakusquad, Yaomomo, Kyoka, Ochako, Iida, Shoto, Shinso and Tokoyami. Tokoyami had started sitting with us not long after the whole Stain incident. He didn't talk a lot, but when he did talk he mainly spoke with Kyoka and Shinso. They all seemed to have the same interests and vibes so it made sense. I was just eating my food peacefully and talking with Kacchan and Ochako when an obnoxious voice spoke up from behind me. "Well if it isn't the self-serving students of Class 1A!" I sighed heavily and spun around to see Neito Monoma stood behind me, sneering down. The entire class had been in run-ins with Monoma. He seemed to have it in for us.
For the most part, Class 1A and 1B were on good terms. Their class president Kendo was good friends with Yaomomo and Iida. I myself was friends with Yui Kodai and Yosetsu Awase. At first, Awase only spoke to me so that he could get closer to Yaomomo, he had a really big crush on her, but we became friends fairly quickly. I became friends with Kodai more on accident than actually seeking her out. She was a very quiet girl and rarely showed her emotions. Though she wasn't moody, she just didn't physically show her emotions. We lived fairly close to each other before we moved into the dorms and often walked home together in silence. It wasn't awkward and as far as I could tell she didn't mind my company. Not long after we began walking together, I finally spoke to her. She didn't speak much, but she was an excellent listener and we ended up becoming friends.
Back to Monoma. He was always targeting my class, most likely because we were known to the general public after the attack on the USJ and the 4 students on the podium at the Sports Festival all being from 1A. I'm sure if he wasn't so obnoxious I'd be able to stand him, but I just didn't like the boy. "What do you want Monoma?" I asked in a resigned tone of voice. Upon hearing me mention Monoma's name, everyone's conversations came to an end and they all turned to stare at Monoma. He shifted slightly where he stood due to all of the eyes staring at him. We had come up with the intimidation technique to try and get him to back off without actually arguing or fighting with him. "W-w-well..." Monoma stuttered before coughing into his hand to avoid our eyes. He seemed to regain his confidence because his gaze snapped back up to us, somehow he managed to look more conceited. " I just thought I'd come over here and show you losers what a real hero is supposed to look like. You're all nothing but attention seekers who couldn't defend a slug. We'll see how good you actually are when Class 1B beats you all in the final exams." Monoma cackled. He just kept aggravating us for no reason. We were all training to be heroes and all of the events which had happened to us were out of our control. Plus, in all honesty, his insults were weak. Who even calls people losers anymore? Pathetic. "Could you please just leave us alone, Monoma. We're all working towards the same goal and arguing amongst ourselves now will only hinder our work relationship in the future." Momo said. Everyone nodded along with Yamomo's statement, which made Monoma look like he was about to blow a fuse. He opened his mouth to snap back, but he was silenced by a swift chop to the neck by Kendo. "Sorry about him. He's getting stressed out about the exams so he's being more obnoxious than usual. I'll take him away now." Kendo explained cheerfully. She was dragging Monoma away when she stopped as if she had suddenly remembered something. "Oh! I almost forgot to mention. I know an upperclassman and he said that we'd most likely be fighting the robots from the entrance exam for the practical exam." Kendo notified us before continuing to drag a groaning Monoma away from our table.
"YAY! If we're fighting robots then I can go all out with my quirk!" Kaminari cheered alongside Mina. I contemplated it for a while before I spoke up. " I doubt it'll actually be robots. The format of the entrance exam made it hard for people with quirks which only work on humans to pass. Considering this, they will most likely change the exam so that it isn't unfair for Shinso. Plus, we all know that we can fight the robots and so do the teachers. It wouldn't be much of an exam if we weren't challenged." I spoke my thoughts out loud. Vocalizing them for the rest of my table to hear. Several people (Yaomomo, Kacchan, Iida and Shinso) nodded along to my reasoning. "Makes sense. Those robots are too fucking weak to use in an exam. I want to fight a person!" Kacchan yelled, slamming his fist on the table. Kirishima tried to calm Kacchan down as Mina and Kaminari sighed sadly. They clearly saw the reasoning behind what I had said and weren't happy with the prospect of having to fight people. "I'm so going to fail if we have to fight people." Mina huffed, letting her head fall onto the table. Denki copied her actions, though his head hit the table a little harder than I think he intended it to. "Don't worry guys! You'll do fine! I'm sure whatever happens you'll still be able to make it to the training camp." I reassured my friends. They simply groaned in response. I felt a large hand being placed into my bed of green curls. The hand rubbed my head affectionately. I looked up and saw that Todoroki was smiling down at me gently, "You're so sweet, love. You could raise a dead slug's spirits." he whispered so that only I could hear him. I think it was a good thing that only I could hear him since it was a pretty weird thing today. He wasn't the best at flirty or complimenting people. I still appreciated his efforts though. "Thanks, Shoto." I smiled in reply.
"Your academic tests start tomorrow. I advise you do any last-minute studying you may require tonight. Remember, if you fail these tests you will not be going to the training camp." Dad spoke tiredly as he addressed us in our classroom after a hero training exercise. The hero training that day had involved a ten on ten battle. We were situated in a cityscape and had to capture the other team's weapon. The catch was that to get to the weapon you needed a key and said key could have been with anyone. For my team, I'd head the key. For the opposing team, Tokoyami had possessed the key. In the end, my team had won by the skin of our teeth. We had both captured each other's keys but Shoji had gotten to the opposing teams base before they could get to ours. Kacchan was fuming. Anyway, Dad was advising us to do some last-minute revision before the tests began the next day. There were only 5 minutes left of class and I could see that people were getting restless, they just wanted to get out of class. "So, are there any questions?" Dad asked monotonously. Nobody raised there hands. Dad was about to get into his sleeping bag when Mina spoke up. "So Aizawa Sensei, when are you and Present Mic, like getting married?" She asked in her usual loud and enthusiastic tone of voice. I could see my dad's cheeks tint a slight pink hue. "Yeah, Dadzawa. when is your wedding? Will it be in the summer, though I guess you didn't get engaged till long ago. Oh, are you going to adopt a kid? I think you'd be a great dad. You're like a second dad to me. That sounds weird since your my teacher, but still." Kaminari rambled on, I don't think he even noticed how red Shota's face was getting. I swear when Kami called him Dadzawa, Shota's soul left his body. "I agree! You'd be such a great parent. Like, strict but fair. You literally risked your life to protect us, so I feel like he'd be a protective dad. What do you think Hanta?" Mina asked, turning to Sero for his opinion. "Yeah, I agree. He'd be a really good parent. Dadzawa would definitely be able to teach his kid some good lessons. How 'bout you Kiri, what do you think?" Sero nodded along before turning to Kirishima. I think at this point, my dad had died from embarrassment. He was clearly speechless, it was very amusing to see. "I totally agree! The way he rushed into Izuku's room and calmed him down from his nightmare was so manly! He ran up three flights of stairs to get to our floor! In conclusion..." Kiri nodded before looking up at Dad along with Mina, Kami and Sero. "We think that you should adopt a child." they said in perfect unison. Had they rehearsed telling my dad that he should adopt a child instead of revising for their exams? Yes. Yes, they had. Dad just looked at them with a red face before shaking his head and shuffling out of the classroom, still in his banana yellow sleeping bag, "Class dismissed." he sighed.
"You lot are idiots, you know that?" Kacchan grumbled to his friends as we ate our dinner. After we had come out of class earlier that day, the Bakusquad had laughed heartily at my dad's reaction. Kacchan had shouted at them for wasting valuable revision time and questioned if they even wanted to do well. They had, of course, said they did so Kacchan had to lead them through a whirlwind breakdown of everything they hadn't revised. I'm sure that his aggressive teaching method would make the information stick in their heads, but they may have lost a few brain cells because he was hitting them on the head so much. "We know, but his reaction was totally worth it." Kirishima laughed. I smiled as I shook my head at their idiocy and continued to eat the cold soba that Shoto had prepared for me. Shoto was happily slurping away, not taking in anything which was happening around him. He could be very oblivious.
When we finished our food, we all headed to our rooms to cram for the last time and get an early night of sleep. We had three days of exams to get through and it wouldn't be helpful if we fell asleep in the middle of them. Shoto kissed me on the forehead, as he usually did before we parted ways to go to our bedrooms every night and told me to have sweet dreams. He could be romantic when he wanted to be.
The first day of exams contained one of our maths exams, one of our science exams and our history exam. I found it fairly easy and I knew that some of my friends did as well. Although there was one section in the science exam that I found a bit difficult. Quantitative chemistry was not my forte. How did they expect to me to memories the formula for moles and Avogadro's Constant? Aside from that, the first day of exams wasn't too difficult.
The second day, we did our second and final maths exam. It was a bit harder than the first one, but we were allowed to use a calculator for that one so it kind of balanced it out. We also did our second science exam, this one was our physics paper. Again, it was fairly easy, there were some things I had to think extra hard about, but overall it was ok. The final exam of that day was our English exam which I breezed through easily. Both the written and speaking portions of the exam. Although I can't say the same for everyone. I saw Kirishima looking pretty lost once I had finished writing and was just looking around. I didn't see how others performed in the speaking portion, but Ochako told me she thought she had blown it.
The third and final day of exams dawned and I could feel the anticipation for all the exams to be over hovering in the air. Our third science exam was on biology and I felt pretty confident after handing my test in. Our hero theory exam was harder than I expected, I had to dig into the depths of my memory to remember what we had learnt at the start of the year. I'll be the first to admit, I didn't study very hard for the Japanese Literature exam, so it was no surprise to me when I struggled in it. When we were all finally allowed to leave the classroom, the entire class sighed with relief. The academic exams were finally over, now all we had to worry about was the practical exam.
I based the exams very loosely off of the GCSE's in the UK. I'm dreading having to do my chem and physics exams in less than a years time. Not to mention that I will be doing two exam papers for each science (physics, chemistry and biology). But let's not talk about that. Something I like about this chapter is the bit where the bakusquad suggest the Shota would adopt a child.
This story is getting really close to the end and I'm scared that you're all going to hate me for what I'm going to do. Before we reach the end I just want to say that I'm writing a second book. Anyway, thank you for reading chapter 49 of Occurrence and I hope you have a wonderful day wherever you are.
