Chapter 48: Exam Pressure
I'm updating today because it's the first day of pride month! Happy Pride month! 🏳️🌈❤
Weeks passed, taking us from mid-May to the end of June. Kacchan, Shoto, Iida and I had put the Stain debacle behind us, we wanted to forget about it and just move on with our life. But the world had different plans. It was hard to go on the internet and not be bombarded with video after video about Stain's life or the attack on Hosu City. It was infuriating. Everywhere I looked I was constantly reminded of Stain and my fight with him. I think it was getting to Shoto and Kacchan as well. Shoto was just getting annoyed with it. It was clear to see on his face (if you knew where to look, which I did). Kacchan despised any mention of Stain with a burning passion. He still hadn't told me what was wrong, but something that Stain had said was getting to Kacchan. He was still his usual aggressive self, but there was a contemplative look in his eyes. Like he was beating himself up for something. Aside from the incessant reminders of Stain, nothing out of the ordinary happened. We did our school work. Practised to become heroes and did normal teen things.
"As you are aware, the school term is coming to an end, soon it will be summer." Dad muttered tiredly. There was a slight buzz from the class at the mention of the oncoming summer holiday. "However, you are hero course students and you won't get the luxury of sitting about and doing nothing. This summer we will be going to a training camp where you will strengthen your quirks so that you can potentially do your provisional license test this year.". At the mention of a camp, the Bakusquad let out cries of excitement but immediately shut up at Dad's steely glare. "Since the school term is coming to an end, you will be doing your exams in a week time. To go to the training camp you must get at least 60% on the academic portion of the exams and pass the heroics portion. Since there are five minutes left of class, you may converse amongst yourselves." Dad had barely finished his sentence before he was on the floor snoozing away.
"Wow! Training camp sounds so fun!" Mina shouted. Several people around the class nodded in agreement. "Dadzawa has set some strict requirements though. 60% on all of our tests is going to be really hard for us to achieve." Kaminari sighed dramatically. "Hard for you maybe, dumbass, but everyone else can get at least 60%. It's you two that are dumb enough to never get above 50%" Kacchan scoffed at Kaminari and Mina. Whilst they bantered between themselves, I turned to Kyoka. "Dadzawa? What's that?" I asked confused. Kyoka sighed and let her head flop onto her desk. Shinso, who was passing by, answered my question for me. "It's the name they've come up with for Aizawa Sensei. They said he's like the class's dad so he's now called dadzawa. Also, could you please tell your boyfriend to stop bugging me about mine and Aizawa Sensei's similar features." Shinso said tiredly. I looked behind him to see Shoto talking to Yaomomo, but he was staring at Shinso's back suspiciously, I could almost see the gears going in his head. I sighed and looked back at Shinso. "Yeah, I'll talk to him." I sighed exasperatedly. Shinso nodded his head thankfully before slouching over to the Bakusquad and standing behind Kami. Kami stiffened slightly and his cheeks gained a rosy hue. It appeared as though someone had a crush.
"Hey, Izuku." Shoto called. It was the end of the day and I was walking back to the dorms with Kacchan, Kirishima, Ochako and Iida. All of the rest of my friends had rushed ahead so that they could prepare for the study session which they had begged Yaomomo to host for them. Sero, Mina and Kami had ranked bottom of the class in the mid-terms so they desperately needed tutelage. I have a feeling Kyoka was just tagging along because she wanted to hang out with Yaomomo. "Oh, hi Shoto." I beamed at my boyfriend as he and Tsu ran to catch up to us. When they did catch up, Shoto took his hand into mine and began to walk beside me. We hadn't tried to hide the fact that we were in a relationship so practically everyone knew. I watched out of the corner of my eye as Tsu and Ochako's hands gently brushed against each other. "Could you help me revise for the exam? You ranked better than me in the midterms." Shoto asked. I nodded my head excitedly, "Kacchan and I always study for tests together. You can join us. Kiri is tagging along to because he needs to boost his grades as well." I explained to Shoto. We spoke between ourselves as we slowly made our way to the dorms. Whilst walking, I admired Shoto and reflected on our relationship. We went on dates every other Saturday and spent a lot of time together. Since we started dating, Shoto had been more open and friendly with everyone, although he was still very oblivious and could come off as cold. We hadn't yet shared a full kiss. We only ever hugged, held hands and kissed either the cheek, hand or forehead to show affection. I was nervous in all honesty and Shoto respected that.
"NO, YOU DUMBASS!" Kacchan screamed at Kirishima. We were all sat at the dining tables with revision materials spread around us. We would have sat in the lounge, but Yaomomo had claimed that area for her study group. "CAN YOU NOT READ! The question says 'Write 9 root 27 as a power of 3'. I don't know what the fuck you think you're doing but that isn't how you do it. This so fucking simple!" Kacchan ranted and raved as he guided Kirishima through a maths question. Shoto, Ochako (who had decided to join us) and I just ignored them and worked on our English work. "So you say it interesting?" Ochako asked, completely mispronouncing the word. "No, it's said: in-ter-est-ing." I pronounced slowly for her. She nodded reluctantly before trying again. The second time she said it correctly although it sounded a bit off. That was only to be expected seeing as we were learning a different language. "Ok, now say the full sentence." I told her. "We talk about many things interesting." Ochako slowly articulated. "Ok, you're nearly there but the interesting doesn't go at the end. You say it: We talk about many interesting things. It's ok to get sentence order wrong though." I explained to my friend. She nodded before going back to carefully saying each word in her prepared speech. I was going to turn to Shoto and see if he needed help but I was cut off by Kacchan's loud voice. "YOU IMBECILE! HOW IN THE EVER LOVING FUCK DID YOU GET THAT ANSWER!" he yelled, angrily screwing up the piece of paper Kiri was working on and blowing it up. "Hey." Kiri said weakly. "The answer is 3 to the power of 7 over 2! That's really not that hard!" Kacchan fumed as he fell back into his chair and looked at Kirishima as if he were a lost cause. I felt sorry for Kirishima, Kacchan wasn't the best teacher due to his anger. "How about I help Kiri with his maths, and you come over here and help Ochako with her English. In 10 minutes we'll swap back, it'll give you time to cool off." I suggested. Kacchan nodded his head, so we swapped seats and continued our revision.
"Finished!" I breathed thankfully. We had just finished our revision session. After Kacchan and I had swapped back to our original seats, Kacchan was a little bit more level headed after speaking with Shoto. I had managed to get Kiri to understand the basics of what Kacchan was teaching him so that they could go over some of the more advanced stuff. "What time is it?" Ochako asked tiredly. Shoto looked at his watch. "It's 5 pm. Katsuki just went to cook dinner." he said. Since Kacchan was making dinner, I knew that it was going to be delicious. "I nearly forgot that I have practice today." I said slamming my hand into my head. Shoto took my hand away from my head and kissed the redding patch of skin on my head. "Don't beat yourself up, love. Aren't you going to practice that song you wrote?" Shoto whispered against my head. I blushed at his proximity to me. No matter how long we dated for I didn't doubt that I would always have the same reaction to him. "Y-yeah. We've nearly perfected it. You can come and watch if you want." I offered both Shoto and Ochako. Ochako told us that she couldn't because she had to video call her parents, but Shoto was happy to come along.
After a delicious dinner of lasagna, I headed up to Kyoka's room. We normally did practice in either her room or Kacchan's room since they both had drum sets. More often than not it was held in Kyoka's room. When I arrived at her room, I knocked and received a rushed "Wait one second." before a flustered Kyoka opened the door. Her face was extremely red and her hair looked as if it had been pat-down in a rush. I raised a single eyebrow at her scruffy appearance before carefully walking into the room, as not to bash my guitar on one of the walls. Shoto walked in behind me, not even batting an eyelash at Kyoka's appearance. When I got into the main part of Kyoka's room, I saw an equally as flustered Yaomomo sat on the floor, 'reading' a book. Said book is upside down. It didn't take a genius to figure out what had been happening. I decided to not mention anything. Kyoka should be glad that it was me who arrived first and not Kacchan. He would have taken the piss out of her for days. Yaomomo greeted me once her face had returned to its normal colour. We struck up a conversation as we waited for Kacchan to arrive.
When Kacchan finally arrived, Kami, Kiri, Sero and Mina were all trailing behind him like lost puppies. Shinso was there as well, but he looked as if he couldn't care less. "Kat, how do you expect to fit all these people into my room?" Kyoka asked, exasperated. Kacchan shrugged and walked over to the drums, "I didn't invite them. The bastards just followed me." he grunted. A mini argument broke out between Kami and Sero over who could sit on the chair. The argument ended when Mina just sat in the chair and pulled both boys onto her lap (somehow) as if she were their mother and they were her sons. Shoto and Yaomomo were already taking up Kyoka's bed and if Kiri and Shinso were to just stand there then there wouldn't be enough room for Kyoka and me to play. You can not fit 10 people into a dorm room alongside furniture and the plethora of instruments that Kyoka kept. "I have an idea. How about we move the drum forwards a bit so that Kyoka and I are stood by the door to the room. Then the rest of you can stand in the hallway." I suggested over the sounds of the Bakusquad arguing over seating. Everyone stopped and looked at me for a second before nodding at my plan.
Now set up, we could finally start practice. I wasn't sure why so many people had decided to come and watch us practise, but it was useful for decreasing performance anxiety. We didn't play the song straight away, we just did a warm-up. after we had gotten into the swing of things we finally decided to start playing the song. We had been practising the song for a month so we could play it nearly flawlessly. Kyoka started singing immediately whilst I played the guitar. After the little intro, we started the instrumental bit of the music. Kacchan began playing the drums whilst Kyoka and I played slightly faster. The tempo of the instrumental music stayed the same as Kyoka started singing again. There was a little riff before the chorus started and I sang alongside Kyoka. "Deviltown is colder in the summertime. I'll lose my mind at least another thousand times. Hold my hand tight, we'll make it another night. I still get a little scared of something new, but I feel a little safer when I'm with you. Falling doesn't feel so bad when I know you're falling this way too.".
The song ended with the final strum of my guitar. The gathered people in the hallway clapped happily. At some point during our practice, Tokoyami and Shoji had joined the crowd of people listening to us play. I'm sure that the rest of the dorm could hear us play as well, we weren't exactly quiet. "You're surprisingly good," Shinso commented, I forgot that he had never heard us play before. "What'd you say you insomniac!" Kacchan hollered from the doorway. Shinso shrugged and continued to lean against Kami's shoulder with his eyes closed. "What's the song called?" Yaomomo asked. "Deviltown (by Cavetown). Izu wrote it." Kyoka replied. I could see her cheeks flushed slightly pink as she spoke to Momo. So they can make out but they can't talk to each other without blushing. Sounds about right for Kyoka. "We should play a few older songs to keep them fresh and then we'll stop." Kyoka said, turning to address Kacchan and me. We both nodded in agreement before preparing to play a few more songs.
We played a few more songs, such as Alone together (by Fall Out Boy), before we called it a day and hauled all of the equipment back into Kyoka's room. Kacchan and I bid Kyoka goodnight before making our way up to the fourth floor. Shoto and Kiri followed after us. They complimented us on our music as we walked up the stairs. I blushed when Shoto expressed his love for Deviltown. I had taken slight inspiration from him, although I didn't tell him that.
When we arrived on the fourth floor, we all said good night to each other before slinking into our rooms and preparing for bed. When I looked at my clock, I saw that it was only 9 pm, but I was tired from the day's work so it didn't take long for me to slip into a deep sleep.
Sharing my taste in music with random people of the internet again. Nice. Here's Alone Together for those who may want to listen to it. It's got to be one of my favourite Fall Out Boy songs outside of the entire Infinity On High album.

I liked the studying portion of this chapter. Katsuki's reaction to Kirishima not understanding is how I can get when I get frustrated when trying to help my friends. All of my friends and family have all stated very adamantly that I'd be a shit teacher. I agree.
Anyway, thank you for reading chapter 48 of Occurrence. I hope you have a wonderful day wherever you are and Happy Pride Month! 🏳️🌈🎉❤
