Chapter 41: Internship
In the two weeks leading up to our internships, I became a lot closer to Todoroki. I had a sneaking suspicion that Ochako and Kacchan had a part to play in our evolving relationship. They didn't tell anyone else about my crush on Todoroki (thankfully), but it was no less embarrassing when they subtly tried to push us together. Over the two weeks, Todoroki had eaten lunch with us consistently and even participated in the class's weekend fun sessions. Seeing him slowly break out of his shell warmed my heart. But that wasn't all that happened within those two weeks. The entire class decided who they would be interning with. Ochako was going to Gunhead's agency, Kyoka was going with Death Arms and Yaomomo was going to Uwabami's Hero Office. They were all respectable agencies, but I have to say mine and Kacchan's internship was with the most reputable hero. We were both interning with Endeavour, along with Todoroki. After becoming friends with Todoroki, he shared with me how abusive his father had been in his past and why he was so opposed to using his fire. The way he had described his home life hit too close to home. It may have been 8 years since I had last lived with the devil but I remembered my life before I was saved in very vivid detail. Even Kacchan, who was in no way a sympathetic person, listened to Todoroki speak of his home life and reassured him. Of course, the way he reassured Todoroki was by shouting at him and ultimately insulting him whilst trying to be kind, but I think the message got across.
"Have you all got your costumes?" Dad asked the class. Everyone nodded. We were stood in the train station, all of us had our costumes and were ready to go off and live in the real world of heroes for a week. "Keep those safe and never wear them without being accompanied by a pro hero, you don't have your provisional licenses so you're not legally allowed to wear them. Good?". Everyone nodded again before we were dismissed, everyone headed towards separate trains. I noticed that Iida looked really down. He had lookedinconsolable for the past couple of weeks, it had really concerned me. The previous night I had confronted him.
"Umm...Iida." I muttered quietly. Iida looked up from his homework and smiled ever so slightly. "Ah, Midoriya! What can I help you with?" Iida replied, since the sports festival he hadn't seemed so uptight, he wasn't relaxed exactly, he just wasn't acting as if there was a stick up his ass. "Well... I just noticed that you've seemed a bit down lately and I wanted to check to see if you were alright. I understand your brother was attacked and I just wanted to tell you that I'm always here to help you." I placed a hand on Iida's shoulder to reassure him that I would help him no matter what and that he could trust me. Iida patted my back as he stood up. "Thank you Midoriya, but I'm perfectly fine. I appreciate the offer for help though." Iida replied as he left me standing by the sofa, not believing a word which he had just said.
I watched as Iida walked away, head hung low, towards his train to Hosu. Something about the location of his internship seemed fishy to me. His brother was attacked in Hosu and the Hero Killer Stain was in Hosu. I had a suspicion that Iida was going to try and go after him, but I didn't want to believe it. Iida seemed so rigid when it came to laws, would he really break the law to try and get revenge? "Oi! Dumbass! Stop standing there and get on the fucking train!" Kacchan yelled across the terminal. His loud, aggressive voice caused heads to turn and people to murmur to each other. I didn't want to draw any more attention to myself, so I ran over to the train and jumped on just in time for the conductor's shrill whistle to sound through the air.
The train ride was boring. Kacchan and I listened to our own music, even through my own earphones I could hear Kacchan's music blaring. It sounded like he was listening to very drum oriented music which made sense considering he was a drummer. I was listening to a playlist of the band's music as well as some popular songs. Listening to the music was giving me inspiration so I decided to try and write a song, though I knew that my attempts may not work out. Todoroki was passed out opposite us. We hadn't been on the train for 5 minutes before he was snoring away opposite us. Kacchan had wanted to draw on his face, but I had held him back and chastised him. He hadn't given up until I quietly commented that he would be ruining my chances with Todoroki. That had gotten him to stop climbing over the table and sit back in his seat. I knew that he wouldn't want to make me sad. I think Kyoka and I may have been Kacchan's only weaknesses. Me more so than Kyoka, given my past and all. So the train ride went on in silence. Kacchan and I listening to our music and Todoroki adorably scrunching up his nose at his dreams. I blushed as I stared at him. If he had been awake he probably would have been creeped out.
"Oi, wake up lover boy! We're nearly there!" Kacchan said shaking my shoulder to pull my attention from my writing pad. I looked up and saw that we were indeed nearing our location. "Why can't you wake him up?" I asked in a bored tone of voice. Kacchan clipped the back of my head with his hand, instantly making me more awake. "Use your brain dumbass! If you wake him up, you'll probably advance your relationship!" Kacchan hissed at me, he wasn't loud enough to wake up the sleeping beauty but he did use enough volume to get his point across. The point being, that this was the perfect opportunity to get close to Todoroki. I didn't want to lose the opportunity to get a bit closer to Todoroki, so I climbed over Kacchan to get into the aisle and walked over to Todoroki's seat. I took a deep breath to prepare myself (I'm not sure what I was preparing myself for) and gently shook Todoroki's shoulder. It didn't seem to have any effect. Would it be stupid for me to say I felt like I was in a dating game? I looked over at Kacchan who mimed, rather violently, shaking Todoroki's shoulder harder. I nodded and turned back to shake him harder when the train decided to play fucking cupid.
The panic I felt when the carriage rocked and I was sent sprawling on top of Todoroki was on par with the panic I felt when we were attacked at the USJ (so that's not true but whatever). I landed on Todoroki's lap. Facedown. My face was in Todoroki's lap. And wouldn't you know but that was the exact moment Todoroki decided he'd wake up. WHAT FUN! "Oh. What are you doing Midoriya?" Todoroki asked. He didn't sound disgusted or angry. Just slightly inquisitive which isn't the tone I'd adopt if I was in his place but I wasn't complaining. I could hear Kacchan laughing his ass off as I quickly got off of Todoroki. My face was bright red. I could practically feel the heat coming from my face as I desperately tried to explain the situation Todoroki had woke up to. "It's not what it looks like! We're nearly at where we're supposed to be and I thought that I should probably wake you up but then the train car shook and I fell over and landed in your lap. It's nothing weird! I promise!" I rambled. Todoroki just looked at me with that unreadable look in his eyes. I wasn't sure what he was thinking.
*Shoto's POV*
Waking up with a blushing green-haired boy in my lap was a surprise, to say the least, but I can't say it was unwelcome. Whilst Midoriya rambled and Bakugo cackled, I took the time to admire all the features of Midoriya's face. Like the freckles which were spread like stars in the night sky across his cheeks. Or the enchanting emerald hue of his wide eyes. His untamed hair which looked really soft. I just wanted to put my hand in it. So I did.
I will forever cherish the look of surprise in Midoriya's eyes as I weaved my fingers through his hair. His eyes went even wider and his face somehow heated up even more. He sat in shock, not moving or doing anything. "It's as soft as I thought it would be," I muttered to myself. By this point, I was fully aware of what I was doing. I think it was obvious to even Kaminari that Midoriya had a crush on me. I may not be the most emotionally available guy, but I could spot crushes. Enough lovesick girls had approached me for me to learn what a crush looked like. "Oh, I'm sorry. I shouldn't have done that." I acted surprised as if I had only just realised what I was doing. Midoriya soaked it up and rejected my apology multiple times. Claiming I had no need to apologise. I looked over at Bakugo and saw he was glaring at me. It wasn't a jealous glare. More like a 'we need to have words' glare. I nodded, very subtly and looked out of the window.
We pulled into the train station not long after Midoriya had woken me up. Midoriya was the first one to practically leap from the train to escape the scene of his embarrassment. I was about to follow when an arm barred my way. I looked at the owner of said arm and saw that it was Bakugo. "We're gonna walk over there slowly so we can have a quick chat, got it Icyhot!" He growled threateningly. I wasn't scared easily, but the look in Bakugo's eyes did make me a little frightened. "Ok," I replied, my monotone pitch didn't waver no matter how intimidating the boy in front of me was.
"You know that Izu has a crush on you don't you." Bakugo started. He certainly wasn't one to beat around the bush. "Yes, I am aware." I replied. Bakugo nodded his head silently and didn't say anything more for a minute. "I want Izu to be happy. I've been there for most of his life and I know him better than he knows himself. I know you can make him happy Icyhot. Look, I wouldn't normally say this out loud, but you seem like a decent bloke (I don't care if it's British) and I know that whether you're just friends with Izu or your dating you'll make my brother happier." seeing Bakugo speak so quietly and honestly was a bit unnerving. "All I'm asking is that you don't play with his feelings. I'm fairly certain your his first crush. Don't lead him on. If you don't like him the same way he likes you that's completely fine. That's perfectly natural. But if I see or hear you play with his emotions, even just once, I will not hesitate to beat your ass so bad they'll be scraping you off the floor. I'm good at reading people Icyhot, I can tell when people like one another, don't forget that!" he growled. The Bakugo I was familiar with was back by the time he finished speaking . It was peculiar seeing him act so soft and vulnerable. Something that he said really got to me though. 'I'm good at reading people Icyhot, I can tell when people like one another, don't forget that! '. He said that as if he knew something that I was trying to hide. It was likely that he could tell that I reciprocated Midoriya's feelings.
This was a slower chapter and nothing really happened. I'm going to update later today so you'll get two or three chapters. Something I like about this chapter: I like how protective Katsuki was. I'm currently quite a few chapters ahead when it comes to writing. I'm writing chapter 51. I can't wait for you to see some of the chapters I've written. I really just want to publish them and see your reactions, but I'll restrain myself. Anyway, thank you for reading chapter 41 and I hope you have a wonderful day wherever.
