Chapter 28: Back to School Surprise

*Izuku's POV*

For the three days which I had off due to the USJ attack, I practised diligently with my quirk. I soon figured out that I couldn't transform people or animals into other objects but I could change inanimate objects into living beings. I also discovered that the things I transformed didn't revert to their original object unless I lost concentration within the first minute of it being transformed or wanted it to revert. Papa stayed with me every day and we visited Dad every afternoon. I told him about my progress with my quirk and confided in him about my reoccurring nightmares where I witnessed my mother's murder on loop. Every time the murder looped it somehow became even more gruesome and new details jumped out at me. Like how my mum's eyes rolled into the back of her head. Or how Hisashi's knuckles became stained with blood after the 4th punch. When the three days were over, I was thankful that I was able to walk through the door of 1A and sit at my desk.

I had gotten to school early that day, I'd had to come in with Papa since the League of Villains' attack was still fresh and it seemed as if Hisashi was working with them. I always knew he would end up as a villain. I spent the first 30 minutes of being in the classroom simply listening to music as I updated my quirk analysis book. I had decided to add in the portal guy, Kurogiri's, and the crusty gut, Shigaraki's, quirks to my book. Their quirks were intriguing and it would be handy to have notes on their quirks should we ever face them again, which I suspected we would. The first student to arrive was Iida, as I expected, he greeted me before sitting in his chair with a rigid back and staring at the front of the classroom. It was really unnerving. I was kind of too scared to say anything to him. Students began to flood into the classroom after that. They all greeted me as they usually would. I felt their gazes linger on me for longer than they usually would but that was to be expected. After all, a villain had said that my 'dad' had come to get me and I had ended up fighting one of the villains who claimed to be my 'dad'. I don't doubt that they heard him bragging about killing my mum. But that was a whole different kettle of fish. People spoke quietly amongst themselves as we waited for our substitute teacher to arrive. I spoke to Kacchan about my quirk's new abilities and was about to demonstrate when the door to our classroom slid open with a bang.

I stared in shock as my dad walked to the front of the classroom and stood behind the podium. The entire class looked at him in shock as they took in his bandaged face and arms, he looked like a walking mummy. "AIZAWA-SENSEI!" Mina screeched in a worried tone, "You look terrible! Why are you in school? You're injured. Maybe you shouldn't be in school." other members of the class began to mumble in agreement. Everybody had seen the state my dad had been in when he was carried out of the USJ and rushed to an ambulance. I shared my classmates' concern about my dad's well being. He had been in the hospital for three days, considering his injuries, that was barely any time. The class was silenced when Dad's hair began to float off of his shoulders and the gap in his bandages began to glow an ominous red colour. The class immediately sat in their seats and didn't object anymore, but I could tell by the looks on their faces that they were worried about their teacher. And so was I.

" As you can see, I am still in school. My wellbeing is none of your concern and my doctor said it was fine." Dad addressed the entire class monotonously. I tutted and muttered under my breath, "As if, he literally said you need to be bed bound for another week.". I obviously didn't mutter quiet enough because my dad's head whipped towards me and even with the bandages covering his face I could tell that he was glaring at me. "Have you got something to say, Midoriya.", I cringed slightly at the tone of his voice. He sounded exactly as he did when he told me off for accidentally smashing a photo frame. "Why don't you tell the whole class what you said, hmm? I'm sure we're all dying to hear what you just said.", I knew I was screwed, he was being sarcastic. He was never sarcastic unless he was annoyed or trying to embarrass me. The entire class' eyes were now on me as was my father's. "I was... you know... just expressing my concern about.... your health. I, just think that the doctor would order you to stay in bed for a bit longer. But of course, I'm not a medical expert, so I'm sure the doctor said it was fine for you to be out of bed." I rambled. My dad just tutted and addressed the rest of the class again. One by one everybody's eyes left me and returned to the front of the class, causing me to sigh in relief. I don't think they suspected a thing.

"As I was going to say before I was interrupted, your battle is far from over." Shota paused for dramatic effect. The class was stirred into a silent frenzy of worry at his words. I heard Mineta mutter about more villains behind me, I could hear the quiver in his voice. I really didn't believe he was cut out for the hero course. "UA's sports festival is fast approaching. It's an opportunity to show pro heroes what you're made of and prove your worth. I'll warn you now, it's possible for you to be swapped out to general studies if a student from another class shows potential." Dad explained, I saw a couple of people squirm in their seats at this news.

The class was over and we were just milling about. Groups were clustered together chatting amongst themselves. Kacchan had been dragged away by Kirishima to meet Kaminari, Mina and Sero. As far as I had gathered, Kacchan and Kiri had fought together in the USJ and that had prompted Kiri to try and develop a friendship with him. I was sure that he would be successful in his endeavour, something about his sunny deposition was sure to appeal to Kacchan. Plus if Kacchan made new friends I'm sure they'll hang out with my group of friends as well, meaning I'll have even more friends. I was a very sociable person. Ochako was pumping herself up in the corner of the classroom, she was giving off a scary vibe. She even managed to get Tsu, Kiri and Mina in on her fist-pumping.

"Hey Ochako, what's your motivation?" I asked as we walked down the stairs towards the cafeteria. There was a large group of us moving down the stairs, there were roughly 10 of us. The unusually large group consisted of; Kacchan, Kyoka, Ochako, Iida, Yaomomo, Kirishima, Sero, Mina, Kaminari and me. Kirishima, Sero, Mina and Kaminari were bugging Kacchan, trying to get him to laugh at one of their many cheesy jokes. Yaomomo and Kyoka were quietly conversing together, ignoring the rambunctious laughter from behind them. Iida, Ochako and I were walking at the front of the pack and talking to one another.  "Oh, well you see. I'm doing it for the money. Please don't look at me like that. I know it sounds conceited but I want the money so I can give it to my parents." Ochako began to explain why she wanted to be a hero, even if she wanted money, her cause was still quite noble. "My parents run a construction company and it went bust when I was young. I said that I could help lift heavy things with my quirk but my parents said that I should follow my own dreams and not worry about them. So... I want to earn a lot of money to send to them. Then they can live comfortably and not worry about the company." Ochako's story warmed my heart. "That's so sweet!" I cheered, throwing my arm around her shoulder in a friendly manner. "I'm sure you'll make your parents proud. I bet they're already brimming with pride." I smiled. Ochako hugged me back before we parted ways and continued on our way to the cafeteria.

That evening, at band practise, we were doing something a bit different than usual. Usually, we would go over old songs and just improve our skills. But that evening Kyoka revealed to us that she had written a new song on a whim and wanted to see what it sounded like. "It's called Datte Atashi no Hero (by LiSA). I got inspired randomly and just want to see what it's like. It's a bit different to our usual stuff but I want to branch out a bit." Kyoka explained as she adjusted her microphone. Kacchan and I agreed to play the song, knowing fully well that anything Kyoka came up with usually sounded amazing. We had both tried writing songs before but they were never as good as Kyoka's. We played the song through and Kyoka was so thrilled with the results that she asked if we could record it so that she could show her parents. Kacchan and I agreed almost instantly, both of us adored the song and couldn't wait to be able to hear it back later.

"Oi! Well done today!" Kacchan shouted much too aggressively, he sounded like he was angry with us when in reality he was praising us. He needed to work on how he said things. "Thanks, Kacchan." I beamed at him. As Kacchan and I left the studio we chatted between ourselves about random things such as hero classes and the newest action film. We firmly avoided any mention of the USJ.

As you can see I have actually used a Japanese song this time, plus its the third ending so double points. I'm not sure if this is 100% true but apparently the singer (LiSA) wrote this song about Katsuki and Izuku's friendship. I just like the song. Here are the English lyrics (they might not be 100% accurate):

I can't imagine you ever giving up,
Though I'm sure even you have empty, miserable days.

If you think you might be facing any number of monumental efforts—
The kind that come only once in a lifetime—I wanna be there to see it!

Even if we only have one life, together we have an unlimited supply.
I had nothing, but you gave me a sense of meaning. Now I'm unstoppable!

Hurray! Hurray! You have a talent for making me say it again and again!
So keep standing your ground. I'm getting my courage from you.
Hurray! Hurray! All the tiniest things inside me are calling out!
When I look at those eyes, I can start running too.
So show me the ultimate finale!

Shall we go on a little adventure? Can we keep going like this for now?
Though we'll have to consider all our troubles and frustrations too.

Even if we don't have the kind of senses that are bestowed once a millennium,
I still want to see what lies beyond the walls ahead of us!

No matter how many fools there are in this world,
I'll always be by your foolish side!

Hurray! Hurray! Let's keep it going for hundreds of miles!
It's okay to stop if it means we can keep running forever.
Hurray! Hurray! A great cheer opens in bloom!
So show the world that miracle you can create.
Excitement awaits, so let's head for the future!

Our many tales of failure... versions of ourselves we couldn't love... if we can just embrace them, we'll be unstoppable!

I haven't felt it, I haven't felt it yet for myself, but I recognize your power.
Let's overcome the wall before our eyes, then laugh on the other side!

Hurray! Hurray! You have a talent for making me say it again and again!
So keep standing your ground. I'm getting my courage from you.
Hurray! Hurray! All the tiniest things inside me are calling out!
When I look at those eyes, I can start running too—
I too begin to run through your eyes!
So show me the ultimate finale!

After all, you're my hero.
