Chapter 21: UA! UA! UA!
*Shota's POV*
A week after Izuku got his UA acceptance letter, it was finally time for my problem child to go to UA. Izuku had been restless all week, he mostly hung out with Kyoka and Katsuki. They had been practising together and training the entire week. I told them that there was no point tiring themselves out before school even started but they insisted that they weren't doing anything too strenuous. When Izuku was at home, he was always hyperactive, he bounced around the house like he did when he was younger. He was only spurred on by Hizashi who seemed just as excited, if not more, for Izuku to start school. I was looking forwards to Izuku making his dreams a reality in UA, but that bastard Hisashi Midoriya was still out there and I had no idea if he was planning to do anything to my son. It set me on edge not knowing when or if he would attack. I hated not knowing. I knew it was irrational to overthink the situation, I would leave myself open to a surprise attack, but I couldn't help but think of all the possibilities.
*Izuku's POV*
I knew Dad was worrying about me. Of course, I knew, I could read him like a book. I was concerned about Hisashi's lack of activity as well. Hisashi was an impatient man, he didn't like to wait for what he wanted, he just took it. I always pushed Hisashi to the back of my mind; I was still alert as Dad taught me to be, constant vigilance, but I didn't want to constantly be thinking of the man who ruined my life. I would much rather be fanboying over the fact that I was attending the one and only UA High School. All my dreams were coming true. As if I would let some dickhead who doesn't deserve my attention get in the way.
The morning that I was to start my new chapter of education at UA my dad knocked on my bedroom door and sat me down. "What's up dad?" I asked slightly confused, I could have sworn I had heard him leave the house unless it was Hizashi and he spent the night without me knowing. "When you're at UA, you're going to have to go by Midoriya, ok?" he got straight to the point, as per usual. I nodded my head immediately understanding why this was necessary. "It's so that students don't ostracize me, isn't it?" I asked, confirming my suspicions when my dad nodded his head. "Ok, from now on I'm Midoriya Izuku.".
"I can't believe it! We're standing outside of UA, as students!" I squealed happily to Kyoka and Kacchan. I gushed at the front gates and the tall H shaped building. I saw my friends sharing a conspiratorial look but ignored them. Nothing could bring me down from the high I was experiencing. Well... Except for one thing.
"WHERE IS THE BLOODY CLASSROOM!" I cried as we walked down yet another hallway which looked like every other one. "Calm down Izu, geez." Kyoka yawned whilst rolling her eyes. It was like she didn't even care that we could be lost. "OI! Our classroom is literally there. Calm down, dumbass." Kacchan sighed, hitting me gently upside the head. It was Kacchan's weird way of showing affection. He never hurt me, in fact, I barely felt it. I guess you could compare the feeling to somebody ruffling your hair. The three of us stood in front of the enormous door which led into our homeroom classroom. "I guess they have to accommodate every body type." I mumbled under my breath as I stared in awe at the giant '1A' painted in vibrant ruby on the dull brown wood. "Come on, there's no point just staring at the door." Kyoka pointed out as she hauled the door open and stepped into the classroom. I took a deep breath and stepped in after her, Kacchan right on my tail.
It seemed as if we were the last ones to arrive in class. Everybody else was already casually conversing or just sat at their desks. I took a quick look at the clock which hung on the wall and rushed over to my seat, seeing as the lesson was about to start. I was practically buzzing in my seat as I waited anxiously to see who our homeroom teacher would be. My family had been really secretive about who my homeroom teacher was going to be, whenever I brought it up, Dad would change the subject. Papa and Auntie Kayama always began to snicker and gave me cryptic messages along the lines of "you're in for a surprise" and "you'll love them". I had a feeling it was one of them. I was pulled from my thoughts when a hush swept through the classroom. I looked up from my desk and saw what seemed to be a bright yellow caterpillar laid on the floor in front of the door. Upon closer inspection, however, I saw that it was a very familiar man. "It took you 8 seconds to shut up. That's 8 seconds of your education wasted." Dad muttered monotonously, his voice was just loud enough for us all to hear him clearly but quiet enough that nobody made a sound out of fear of losing his voice. "I'm Shota Aizawa, your homeroom teacher." he got out of his sleeping bag and walked to the front of the class, his posture screamed tiredness. Dad was usually tired at home due to the fact that he patrolled at night, but he seemed even more tired and fed up at school. "Put one of these on and get down to the sports field." Shota held up UA's PE (gym) clothes and left the classroom. I was in shock of the revelation that my dad was my homeroom teacher. I was aware of the fact that I would most likely have him for some lessons, but I had no idea he was going to be my homeroom teacher. The last I had heard he was the homeroom teacher for a 2nd-year class. "Stop sitting there like a gorm Izu, hurry up!" Kacchan called from the door. I jumped up from my desk and followed him down the corridor.
"We'll be testing your quirks in a variety of athletic events that you may have done in middle school." Shota explained. We were stood in a group before him, I could sense the nervousness in the air as my fellow students fidgeted under my dad's paralyzing gaze. "What about the welcome ceremony?" a familiar female voice asked, a small quiver in her voice. I looked back and saw that it was Uraraka who had spoken. Shota's gaze immediately snapped to her, causing Uraraka to flinch slightly. "UA is known for its freestyle education. We don't have time to waste if you want to become heroes and not die." Dad's voice was blunt, it left no room for argument. "You did all of the activities your about to do in your younger years, but this time you're allowed to use your quirk. I don't care how you use it.", dad threw a ball at Kacchan who, with his fast reflexes, caught the ball and looked up at Shota in confusion. "You did the ball throw in middle school right?", Kacchan nodded his head, "How far could you throw it?". "67 metres," Kacchan muttered. My dad nodded his head and made a sweeping gesture towards a circle on the floor which was obviously for the ball throw. Kacchan shook his arms slightly and rubbed his hands together, presumably generating enough sweat to let off a huge explosion which would impress our classmates. Kacchan wound his arm up, ready to pitch the ball across the pitch. I saw Kacchan take a deep breath before he threw the ball with a shout of "DIE!". His explosion sent wind rushing towards the class. I rolled my eyes at his theatrics and whispered to Kyoka, "Why did he feel the need to shout die?", Kyoka rolled her eyes and shrugged. Dad held up a little device which showed that Kacchan had thrown the ball 706m. Significantly better than without his quirk. Awed gasps echoed around the class, a redhead behind me whispered "So manly" which kind of confused me but I ignored it as I watched Kacchan walk back towards Kyoka and me, a smug grin on his face. "Watch yourself Kacchan, if you get too confident you'll only get let down." I warned him. Kacchan tutted at me and crossed his arms, but I could tell that he had taken my words to heart. "This is going to be awesome." somebody said a bit too loud. I knew from the look in my Dad's eyes that the quirk test was going to be anything but awesome.
"Whoever comes last will be expelled.". Our homeroom teacher's voice echoed ominously around the training field. The atmosphere which had previously been excited and joyful quickly soured. "Your joking, right?" a yellow-haired boy whispered in fear. The entire class stared at Shota with fear-filled eyes. Even I was a bit surprised. I knew that my dad had a reputation for being tough on his students and expelling some people, but it seemed to be a bit excessive to get rid of students on the first day. "I don't joke. If you want to be in the hero course, then prove it." dad replied, glaring at all of us. I could feel everybody's resolves stiffen as they prepared to go all out and prove why they deserved to become heroes.
The first event was the 50-meter dash. I watched in awe as my classmates used their quirks to make themselves faster. I loved watching quirks in action and I was quite honestly disappointed that I couldn't bring my quirk analysis book with me. My lack of notebook didn't stop me from theorising about their quirks though. I muttered at breakneck speeds under my breath which caused Kacchan to gently hit me and give me one of his 'shut up you raging fanboy' glares. I gave him an embarrassed smile before I focused back on the task at hand. I realised it was nearly my turn to run and it seemed I was going to be running against Kacchan.
Kacchan smirked down at me as we both stood on the start line. We prepared ourselves to run. Kacchan's hands sparked and the delicious smell of caramel filled the air. I got down on all fours and transformed into a cheetah, prompting some gasps from my classmates. As soon as the buzzer sounded, Kacchan I were off. The race between the two of us was so fast that it felt like it barely happened. We crossed the line very close to each other. Unfortunatly for him, Kacchan finished 0.03 seconds after me. I ran the 50m in 4.10 seconds. "Well done Izuku." Kyoka congratulated me with a pat on the back. I smiled down at her and turned to see Kacchan looking at me with a certain light shining in his eyes. To any other person he might look angry, but that was just his resting bitch face, in reality, he was determined. He was determined to beat me in all of the events we were going to partake in. I smirked, almost unnoticeably, at Kacchan. It was a direct challenge and by the way he clenched his fists and smirked in return, Kacchan was all too ready to take up my challenge.
Event after event, Kacchan and I competed to come out on top. He beat me in quite a few events whilst I narrowly overtook him in others. We tied on the endurance run. We were two of four people who were still running when dad called an end to the test. The other two students had been Kyoka and the boy who helped me at the entrance exam. Seeing him again made a light, almost indiscernible, rosy blush spread over my cheeks. It was no surprise to me that Kyoka and Kacchan could run for a long time, we had all trained together and we had run up mountains to build up our stamina and endurance, a flat circular track was really nothing.
The final event was the ball toss. Many of the others had used very creative means to get the ball as far as they could. One girl, the black-haired one from the exam hall, pulled a launcher from her stomach and fired the ball across the field. I saw Kyoka blush out of the corner of my eye and smirked slightly, somebody had a crush. Uraraka used her anti-gravity quirk to simply make the ball float away, which turned up an infinity symbol on dad's little device. The class clapped for her, I even saw a smidge of respect in Kacchan's eyes. The whole class went until finally, it was my turn.
As I walked into the circle from which I had to throw the ball, I debated on what I should transform into. I could transform into Uraraka and have an infinity ball as well, but I didn't really want that, I wanted a sold number. I felt like the best way to do that was to transform into Kacchan. Throughout the day, I had only changed into animals, so I knew the class wasn't expecting me to morph into Kacchan. I took great pride in seeing the unhinged jaws and surprised looks on everybody's faces. Well, nearly everybody. Kyoka, Kacchan, Uraraka and Dad had all seen my quirk before so they weren't surprised. I copied Kacchan's previous actions and wound my arm back, ready to send the ball flying with an enormous explosion. The smell of caramel once again filled the air as I powered up Kacchan's quirk and sent the ball rocketing across the field. I was tempted to shout something, just to imitate Kacchan, but I withheld myself. I didn't want my classmates thinking I was a weirdo. Shota's machine beeped and he showed the class the number displayed boldly on the screen. Kacchan barked in laughter and turned to me, a satisfied gleam in his eyes. The number on the screen was 705, 1m below Kacchan's score. I sighed and massaged my shoulder gently as I shifted back. Using Kacchan's quirk too much really did a number on my shoulders, I really admired his perseverance to continue to train with so much discomfort. "Your rankings will now be displayed on this projection." Dad deadpanned, drawing the classes attention.
I scanned the projection for my name and saw that I was 4th, one below Kacchan. I looked at Kacchan and took notice of the determination on his face. The old, angry Kacchan may have been angry at being 3rd, but Kyoka and I had mellowed him out. Now he was a bit calmer, even if it was just fractionally. I looked at who had come above us and saw that their names were Momo Yaoyorozu and Shoto Todoroki. I recognised their names from the list of recommended students that Dad had left lying on the coffee table. It was no wonder they took 1st and 2nd respectively. I looked at Todoroki and realised he was the one who had stopped me from falling. I wanted to become his friend immediately, he looked really sad, and I didn't like that. I heard a pained whimper come from behind me, I turned to see a minuscule grape headed boy looking at the rankings with absolute terror in his eyes. I assumed he was Minoru Mineta, the boy who's name was firmly in 20th place. Everybody gave him sympathetic looks yet their eyes showed how relieved they were that it wasn't them getting kicked out of the hero course. Well, at least they were lead to believe that the person in last place was going to be kicked out.
"The person in last place won't be leaving UA, but..." Dad announced making the whole class's eyes go wide, "you are more at risk. Don't mess up.", Dad began to walk away from us, clearly suggesting that the lesson was over. "What! Why would you say that we could get excluded!" Mineta screamed he was silenced by Shota's quirk induced glare, "Rational deception.". With that final line, Dad was gone, leaving a stunned class in his wake.
DON'T KILL ME! I know I didn't get rid of Mineta and I know Shinso isn't in 1A...yet. I have my reasons. Shinso will be in 1A and I might get rid of Mineta. I just think that Shinso being in the hero course from the start of the year just doesn't really make sense given his quirk. It's well established in the manga and anime that the main reason Shinso was unable to get in was that his quirk was useless against robots. He will be in class A! You'll just have to wait for it to happen. As for Mineta still being in the class, nobody at this point knows how much of a fucking perv he is so he can't be excluded for that. I think I could write a pretty good scene where his gets his comeuppance, trust me it'll be more satisfying this way.
