Chapter 18: Entrance Exam

My hands sweated profusely as I took shaky steps towards the daunting UA gate. Kyoka and Kacchan had called me earlier that morning and told me they would meet me by the examination hall. They knew that I'd probably be late due to my nerves and they were absolutely correct. My heart hammered at my ribs and my hands felt really clammy. Dad and Papa had reassured me over and over again that I would be fine and that all my hard work wouldn't go to waste, but seeing all the intimidating faces around me I was having doubts. Again. I took a deep breath and took a step forward, ready to give the exam my best shot. Unfortunately for me, I tripped.

I squeezed my eyes shut, waiting to feel the stinging pain of the gritty pavement on my hands and face, but the sensation never came. "Are you ok?" A relatively deep voice asked monotonously. I stared down at the arm which was wrapped around my stomach and then up to the face of my 'saviour'. I think I forgot how to breathe for a moment. The handsome face of the boy who caught me stared back at me. His split red and white hair swayed slightly in the wind (Todoroki's hair is always swaying as if it's being blown, I can't be the only one who has noticed, right?) and his heterochromatic eyes showed no emotion. He just looked at me blankly. It took me a moment to realise that I was still in the stranger's arms. I jumped away from him and began to bow over and over again, apologies spewing from my mouth.  "It's ok, just be careful." The boy interrupted with a disinterested tone before he spun on his heel and left me standing like an idiot in the middle of the courtyard.

"There you are Izuku," Kyoka sighed in relief. "We thought you were vomiting in a bush somewhere, your nerves tend to do that to you.". My face immediately turned red at her words. "Let's just get into the hall and fucking ace this stupid written test." Kacchan grumbled moodily. It was clear to anybody who knew the inner workings of Kacchan that he was extremely nervous, with how grouchy he was acting I thought that he was more nervous than me. "Ok, good luck you guys." I smiled shakily as we entered the hall. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw the boy who saved me from public humiliation conversing quietly with a tall, busty, black-haired girl. Were they dating? For some reason, that thought made my heart stutter in fear. I put my hand to my chest and shook my head slightly before walking to my assigned seat, not noticing the gaze of a certain boy on my back.

The test was relatively easy. I won't say it was a walk in the park, there were some questions which had me stumped. I managed to get through the entire paper with time to spare so I decided to have a look around at the other candidates, closing my booklet and placing my pencil very clearly on the desk so that the teachers knew I wasn't cheating. Kyoka was still working on her test but by the look of it, she was nearly done. Her foot tapped rhythmically on the floor, I enjoyed listening to the soothing sound as I continued to survey the rest of the hall. Kacchan was practically laying in his chair and it looked like he had fallen asleep. Somehow. He must have been really uncomfortable. A golden-haired boy looked absolutely distraught as he stared down at his exam paper, his hand occasionally coming up to comb through his hair in distress. A boy with black hair and a scar over his eyebrow was staringly resolutely at his test paper, determination gleaming in his eyes. The tall black-haired girl from before was also finished, she seemed to have the same idea as me to look around the hall. We made eye contact and she smiled sweetly, I smiled in return before we both continued to examine the hall.

"That was fucking easy." Kacchan complained as we exited the hall and milled around some cherry blossom trees. I rolled my eyes and slid down the tree trunk into a comfortable sitting position. "Stop trying to show off Kacchan. Neither one of us is going to be impressed." I teased, earning a weak glare from the aforementioned devil pomeranian. Kyoka had been weirdly silent ever since we had left the hall, she had a look of awe on her face. "You ok there Kyoka?" I asked in a confused tone of voice. Kyoka shook her head slightly before looking down at me and blushing slightly as she spoke. "Yeah, I just saw this beautiful girl in the exam hall." she whispered it, hoping that Kacchan and I wouldn't hear her. We did. "Ah... Has Kyoka got a crush." Kacchan teased, he laughed explosively at Kyoka. Kyoka's ears burned crimson as she hit Kacchan on the arm repeatedly. Kyoka's punches were by no means soft, but all three of us had learned to take each other's hits, so Kacchan didn't seem at all bothered. In fact, he just laughed harder. I smiled at my friends' antics. I loved them with all my heart and was so glad I had met them.

"YEAHHHHH!" Hizashi screamed into the crowd of seated students. A couple of people clamped their hands over their ears and cringed away from his voice. He wasn't using his quirk to its fullest extent, I dreaded to see Mic's quirk in action. "Let me hear you say hey!!" Papa screamed into his audience, an awkward silence consumed the room. Taking pity on the poor man, I shouted "Hey!" in reply. I got a few weird looks from the people around me and Kacchan rolled his eyes at me with a smirk on his face, but I didn't really care about any of that, I just relished in the thankful smile which was directed my way by Hizashi. Once everybody had turned their attention back to him, Papa began to explain the format of the exam. I tuned out at this point, all of this information had been in the handout given to us anyway so I didn't feel the need to listen.

I was jolted out of my daydream by a tall bespeckled boy shooting into the air with his hand raised. I raised an eyebrow at his back, why would he feel the need to interrupt the presentation? My question was soon supplied with an answer when he spoke in a loud, authoritative voice. "Excuse me! There appears to be an error on this sheet! You claim that there are only three foes and yet there are very clearly four here. This is unbecoming of such a prestigious school!" He yelled, his voice was loud enough to rival Hizashi's. "Thank you, little listener! You're correct there are four foes you will face, but the last one is worth 0 points. It's more of an obstacle if you will." Hizashi explained. Satisfied, the strange boy bowed and sat down on his seat again. Whilst his question was a valid one, that boy sure had a way of drawing attention to himself.

Hizashi finished off his presentation by wishing us all luck and dismissing us so that we could prepare for the pivotal point in the exams. The test we were about to undertake decided whether we would be on the track to becoming heroes or be sat bitterly in general education. "It looks like none of us are on the same battleground." Kyoka sighed. I nodded and stared down at my paper which stated in bold letters that I was fighting on battleground A. I looked at Kacchan and Kyoka's papers and saw that they were on battlegrounds C and E respectively. "I guess this is where we part ways until after the exam," I muttered, nerves which I thought I had buried deep within me threatened to spew from me in the form of vomit. A hand was placed delicately on my shoulder. I turned my head slowly, so I didn't accidentally make myself motion sick and saw Kyoka giving me an encouraging smile. "You got this Izu." she smiled, I nodded and calmed my nerves. I was gonna pass the exam and I was going to get as many points as possible. Maybe I could even be first.

Standing before the huge gates which lead into a faux city, I felt my nerves once again creeping up my spine. I closed my eyes and began to take deep, soothing breaths to calm myself. I couldn't afford to make any mistakes, I had one chance at this and one chance only. I wanted to make my dad proud. I wanted to make my mum's dreams for me a reality. I wanted to completely demolish the restraints which had been dragging me back since childhood. The restraints which were forced upon me by Hisashi Midoriya. I knew he couldn't touch me where he was, so I needn't worry about him. But his presence still loomed over me, even after all these years. "BEGIN!"

I was through the gates before anybody else, they were all too surprised at the abrupt start to move. Hizashi said something about the 'die being cast' but I was too busy looking for robots to notice. When I was a few feet into the city I transformed into a falcon and swooped into the air to look for robots. I targeted 3-pointers so I could get the most points whilst at the start. I transformed into various animals and people in order to take down the robots. Changing into objects wasn't going to be very useful when dealing with robots, although I did transform into a boulder and crush three 2-pointers at one point. I transformed into Kacchan and blasted a few robots. I changed into Kyoka and stuck my earphone jacks into them before sending my heartbeat into the robots. I changed into my mum, something that had been a sort of coping mechanism for me, and used her telekinesis to save a few people from being crushed by robots. My mum's quirk had been relatively weak, but because my quirk was quite strong (if used in the correct way) it enhanced her quirk. I had 40 points by the time 5 minutes remained, I wasn't sure if that was enough to pass the exam, but considering we were trying to get into a hero course, I thought that maybe some points would be given to us for rescuing people. I wasn't sure at the time. I was just helping somebody who had fallen stand up when the ground rumbled and a robot the size of a skyscraper slowly rolled down the street I was on.

Everybody froze in horror at the size of the horrific 0-pointer. There was a moment of silence before everybody began to run away from the robot, shoving and pushing each other to get to safety. I understood that the situation was scary, and I was tempted to high tail it out of there, but the way that everybody was handling the situation wasn't very heroic. Against my better judgement, I took a shaky step towards the robot. I shook my head to dismiss any thoughts of running away. I hunched down and transformed into a wolf, ready to make sure that nobody was in the path of the behemoth before me.

Seeing as I had transformed into a wolf, animals notorious for their impeccable sense of smell, hearing and sight, it wasn't hard to find the few people who were in danger and get them out of the path of the robot. I was about to turn away and run to safety when I heard somebodies heart hammering in their chest. The stench of fear was concentrated underneath a particularly large piece of rubble. I sprinted over and peered into the dark space beneath the rubble. "Help." a pitiful voice wheezed quietly. Somebody was in danger and every bone in my body was screaming at me to help them. I transformed back into a human and called out in a reassuring voice, "I'm here. Are you injured.". I heard rocks gently shifting before a girl's round face poked out from the rubble. Her face was streaked with grime and her eyes were brimming with tears. "I'm not hurt. I'm just stuck," she said in a strong voice. I applauded the girl. Even in such a scary situation, she still held her chin up. I looked back at the robot and saw it was practically standing on us. There wasn't much time to act. I spun back around and surveyed the rubble, it looked too big for me to pick up with my mum's quirk and I couldn't really do much to the robot with any of my close friends and family's quirks. I could use Papa's but it would have harmed the girl as well as pushing the robot back. "What's your quirk?" I asked in a rush. My heart was hammering and my hands were really sweaty. "Umm... Zero gravity.?" she answered, though she sounded like she was asking a question. There was no time to waste, I just hoped she could use it on big items.

I shook my arms slightly and relaxed my muscles before taking in the girl's face. Big pink cheeks. Brown eyes. Chocolate hair which seemed to defy gravity. Her appearance wasn't all that difficult. I closed my eyes and allowed my self to transform into the girl in front of me. "Oh my." she whispered in awe. I didn't have time to observe her reaction though, I needed to get her out from under the slab of concrete weighing her down. I looked down at my hands and saw the pads of my fingers looked slightly raised. With no further hesitation, I placed my hands on the concrete, causing it to float upwards as if it were in space. The girl quickly stood up. We began to run together away from the robot and towards safety. I was so thankful that the robot seemed to move at a snail pace.

The exam was over. My nerves about actually doing the exam had now diminished. They were instead replaced with the fears of my results. Did I do enough? Was rescuing people point worthy? How did Kacchan and Kyoka do? These were just a few of the questions which spiralled through my mind. "Hey... thanks for saving me back there." A sweet and familiar voice spoke up to my left. I turned my head and saw the girl from before. She was smiling sheepishly and rubbing the back of her head slightly. "My name is Uraraka Ochaco." she smiled at me and held out her hand for a handshake. I shook her hand and noticed how she expertly kept her finger middle finger off of my skin, it must be annoying to make everything you touch float. "Aizawa-Midoriya Izuku." I smiled in return. I had a feeling that if we both made it into UA we were going to be good friends.

That evening, I was laying on the sofa, watching a stupid satire show on the TV when Shota solemnly sat opposite me. I looked at him quizzically. His expression was distressed and despondent, which was odd, considering he never had any sort of expression. "Izuku... There's something I need to tell you. And... You're not going to like it.".

I'm sorry, #1 in Tododeku? I'm obviously on some sort of drug because I think I'm hallucinating. Thank you so much. None of this would be possible without your support. Also, this story got over 10k reads (bringing the total roughly 22k) in just under 2 weeks which is astounding. I never thought my story would get this big! Thank you!!! Anyway, I hope you enjoyed this chapter and have a lovely day wherever you are.
