Chapter 13: Middle School- Year 1
What's this, an upload on Monday? Well as I'm sure you can see, this story has hit 10k reads, so I'm updating. Thank you so much for supporting this story and making this possible.
"Move the fuck out of my way you extras!" Kacchan screamed as he stomped through the halls of our middle school. I rushed behind him with Kyoka at my side, apologising for Kacchan's actions and glaring at the back of his head. We hadn't even been in middle school for a month yet and half the school was scared of Kacchan.
Roughly 4 years had passed, Kacchan was now 13 and Kyoka and I were 12. I had finally given up on calling Shota by his name, halfway through my second year of living with him, I finally started calling him dad. The look on his face when I first started calling him 'dad' was akin to joy. I must admit, being able to call him dad and not feel fear at the simple word sent a rush of joy through me.
When I was 10, Shota and Joke got together. Only to break up 5 months later. They agreed they were better as friends and I was inclined to agree, I'm no relationship expert, but they didn't seem very comfortable in their relationship. I'm not sure why they decided to date again, they may have been lonely. Or maybe they thought there was a spark when in actuality there wasn't. One person I know was relieved when dad and Auntie Joke broke up was Mic. The look of relief on his face when dad told him was unmistakable. Shota definitely noticed but as far as I know he hasn't said anything to Mic about it.
Around the same time that Shota and Joke broke up, Kacchan practically forced Kyoka and me to start a band with him. Kacchan played the drums, Kyoka was on bass and vocals and I played the guitar. I had started learning the guitar specifically to play in the band with my two friends. At first, my progress was slow and I was tempted to give up when I came across the dreaded F-chord, but with Kyoka's help and Kacchan's 'encouragement', I powered through. Our band was called 'The Juveniles', a name I was opposed to because it made us sound like criminals, but Kyoka and Kacchan adored it.
Over the years, I had been training with Shota, Kacchan and Kyoka. All in preparation for our entrance exam in three years time. Kacchan was the same angry boy he had always been. He was only really calm around Kyoka and me, whenever he was in public he was just too much. Kyoka was a tiny bit more social now. That's to say, she had friends outside of Kat and I, but we'd always be her best friends (her words not mine). I was the same as ever. Still the same nervous, mumbling nerd I'd always been. Anyway, where was I? Oh yeah! I was telling you about my middle school experience.
"Kacchan!" I shouted as I ran up to the explosive boy and grabbed onto his arm. "You need to stop being so rude! I know you can get a bit... worked up, but that's no excuse to disrespect your upperclassmen and scare practically every person in the school." I lectured Kacchan, his eyes softened the more I spoke. Kacchan had always had a soft spot for me. Sucker. "He's right Kat, I was speaking to Yaichi after school yesterday and she said she was scared shitless of you." Kyoka inputted as she twirled her earphone jack around her ear. Kacchan growled lowly and glared at the floor, " What do I care about what some extras think?". Both Kyoka and I looked at him disapprovingly. After a tense moment in which all three of us stood, barely making a noise, Kacchan finally spoke. "Tch. Fine, I'll stop scaring them for now. But I won't promise that it'll last." Kacchan grunted before stomping away.
"Ok class. I'll be giving your tests back after lunch. I'll remind you that eating on the roof is strictly prohibited for first years!" The teacher shouted over the hustle and bustle of the classroom as people stood from their seats and exited the class with their friends. "Come on Izuku." Kacchan shouted across the classroom. I quickly stuffed my notebook into my bag before scurrying in between my classmates towards the door. "Want to eat in the courtyard today?" Kacchan asked as we strolled down the hallway. I took a moment to reply, instead, focusing on how beautiful the school grounds looked. The midday sunlight illuminated the jade green grass and the thulian petals of the blossom trees which were occasionally carried away by the wind. "Sure. Kyoka is hanging out with her friends, right?" I replied. Kacchan nodded his head. We changed our course for the dining hall and instead walked outside into the light spring breeze.
Nothing eventful happened in my first year of middle school. Well not really. I faced the occasional bully which were swiftly dealt with by either Kacchan or Kyoka. I didn't make any new friends in my first year of middle school, or in middle school in general. Everybody saw me as that weird kid who's mum was dead and was adopted by a hobo looking man. Rumours circulated me with every corner I turned. I never brought it up with my friends, I didn't want to trouble them. They deserved to live their own lives.
Kyoka had made friends within the first couple of weeks of school and even got a boyfriend after a couple of months. Kacchan and I pretended to be happy for her when in actuality we were pissed. We weren't jealous that he stole her away from us. Psh, course not. We just didn't like the way he looked at other girls whilst they were dating. Kyoka's boyfriend, a boy named Akashi, always put me on edge, something about the boy just made me wary. Aside from that, Kyoka had a decent sized friend group so I didn't want to bother her with my problems.
Kacchan became quite popular in our first year. His strong quirk, good looks and aloof attitude made girls and boys alike fawn over him. They fell at his feet and obeyed his every wish. It was honestly kind of scary how willing some of the people at our school were to please Kacchan. Of course, Kat just brushed the people off at first, but the more he resisted the more persistent they became, so, he eventually gave up. By the 5th month of school, I could barely go near my best friend without being pushed to the side by some thirsty upperclassmen who wanted to date him. I just smiled and cherished every second I got to spend with him. I wanted to mention to both Kyoka and Kacchan that they never spend any time with me anymore and that I felt like they were pushing me away, but I didn't want to bother them. I just sucked it up. They wouldn't abandon me. I told myself that every day, just to reassure myself.
"Izu!" Kyoka yelled as she ran down the hallway, Akashi in tow behind her. I turned around and offered them both a friendly smile, I may not be a fan of Akashi, but I'll hide my opinion for Kyoka's sake. "Hey," I responded. Kyoka came to a stop in front of me, Akashi's hand was wrapped in a vice-like grip in hers. Why were they even dating? Who needs a significant other at the age of 13? They'd only actually been speaking properly since the end of July and now it was early September, surely that's not enough time to develop a healthy relationship. But what would I know? "Do you want to go on a hike on Saturday, like we used to?" Kyoka asked, her voice tinged with excitement. "Kat told me to ask you since he can't. He's in detention for punching a kid in the face.". I frowned disapprovingly upon hearing about this, he was getting better as well. "Sure I'll come hiking with you two." I smiled at her, I couldn't wait to spend time with just Kyoka and Kacchan.
I arrived at the foot of the mountain a bit earlier than I had intended to. My eagerness to spend time with my friends had caused me to leave 30 minutes early. On my way out of the house, I had seen Mic walking down our road, I could only assume he was going to visit my dad. Mic had been visiting a lot more recently, coming home from UA with dad nearly every day. I didn't really mind all that much, I enjoyed having Mic around, he told really interesting stories for me to take notes to. Auntie Joke still visited often as well, sometimes she would take me out to the cinema or an amusement park. Kacchan and Kyoka used to come with us as well, but once middle school started, it was just me and Joke. I didn't mind though, Auntie Joke was like my mother figure, she reminded me a lot of my mum.
"IZUKU!" Kacchan shouted, effectively gaining my attention. I looked up with a beaming smile, ready to greet my friends, but my smile faltered slightly upon the sight before me. I had expected to only see Kyoka and Katsuki. What I saw instead was Katsuki, Kyoka, Akashi and two girls who I didn't know. My eyebrows drew together in confusion. What were they doing here? The question was a pointless one, it was obvious why they were there. I looked down at the floor and fought off the tears which desperately wanted to leak from my eyes. Once I knew that the tears wouldn't leak, I looked back up and replied to Katsuki with my most enthusiastic voice. "Hi Kacchan, Kyoka, Akashi and I'm sorry but I don't know your names.". The two girls looked at me in disgust before turning their gazes to Kacchan and asking him silently what I was doing there. "This is Yuri and Kim. They asked to come with, hope you don't mind. Akashi wanted to tag along too." Kyoka smiled adoringly at her boyfriend. "Of course I don't mind, the more the merrier." I cheered in an enthusiastic tone of voice. Kacchan and Kyoka smiled at me and moved to start up the mountain, their tagalongs beside them. I allowed my smile to drop into a scowl upon the sight of the five people ascending the hill. All I wanted was time with my only friends. It wasn't a lot to ask for. Yet it seemed as if it was an impossible request.
The hike up the mountain was torturous, to say the least. The two girls, Yuri and Kim, whined almost constantly to Kacchan about the walk being too strenuous and asked him to carry them. Of course, Kacchan barked at them and told them to stop being pussies. I scolded him for his language but only received venomous glares in return from the two girls. As far as I could tell, the girls came with Kyoka, I doubt Kacchan would be able to put up with such shallow people. Speaking of Kyoka, it was impossible to speak to her without Akashi butting into our conversation and stealing Kyoka's attention away. He was jealous. It was as clear as day. But apparently Kyoka was blind to her boyfriend's jealousy. Akashi glared at me constantly, as if he expected me to try and steal Kyoka from him. I rolled my eyes at him. If I wanted to date Kyoka then I would have asked her long before he even came into the picture. So, all in all, I loathed the hike up and down the mountain. The only highlight of the experience was the magnificent view from the top. The view of the pine forest and aqua blue lake made my heart soar and I almost forgot that three jealous people were glaring daggers into my back.
Overall, I'd say my first year in middle school was a shit fest.
