Chapter 12: Happy Birthday Kat
*Izuku's POV*
I was still gushing over Shota's battle exploits when we got home. I only stopped when Shota reminded me that I still had to wrap up Kacchan's presents for the next day. I rushed to my All Might themed bedroom and set down the bag only to run back out of my bedroom a minute later because I needed wrapping paper, scissors and sellotape.
I finished wrapping the presents, albeit sloppily and placed them near the foot of my bed on a pinewood toy box. I couldn't wait to give the presents to Kacchan, I wasn't sure if it would measure up to Kyoka's gift of drum lessons, but I'm sure that Kacchan would appreciate my gift no matter. I patted the gifts fondly before I left the room to bug Shota about his fight against the villain, snagging my heroes analysis book on my way out.
"Izuku! We need to leave for Bakugo's house now if you don't want to be late!" Shota shouted from the living room. I quickly rushed around my room, collecting Kacchan's present and my jacket before I scurried down the corridor towards the front door. Apparently, I was going to fast because I ran headfirst into the front door. I groaned in pain as I sat up and rubbed my head, I could already feel a lump forming below my fingers. "You ok there, kid?" Shota asked in a worried tone. I nodded absentmindedly and assured Shota that I was fine. I jolted suddenly when I remembered why I had been running. "Oh my goodness. We need to go! We're gonna be late!" I screamed. I jumped to my feet, grabbed my backpack which contained Kacchan's presents, grabbed Shota's hand and yanked the door open before dragging Aizawa down the stairs and onto the street.
Due to the fact that I had run all the way to Kacchan's house, Shota and I arrived early. Shota stood and waited patiently for me to catch my breath. I gasped for breath and placed my hands on my knees as I tried to regain as much oxygen as possible."H-h-how can y-you, praise All Might I can't breathe," I gasped, "How can you breathe, we ran for 10 minutes straight?" I asked Shota. Shota looked at me as if I had said something which greatly offended him, "I'm a pro hero." he deadpanned. I felt my face and ears heat up as his words sunk in, of course he could run for 10 minutes consecutively. "Uh... Yeah, let's go in." I muttered in embarrassment, trying to calm down my red face. I could feel Shota's amusement as I walked up to the front door of Kacchan's house and knocked.
"IZU!" Kacchan yelled as he opened the door and hugged me. "KATSUKI! STOP YELLING!" I heard Auntie Mitsuki shout from somewhere deep within the house. Kacchan made a sour face and turned around, mouth poised to yell some sort of obscenity back at his mum, but my hand on his shoulder and the slight shake of my head stopped him. He rolled his eyes and beckoned me and Shota into the house and walked us to the living room which was decorated with orange and red streamers hanging from the ceiling. Black balloons with miniature explosions on them decorated the floor. It seemed Kacchan's party was centred around his quirk, a typical Kacchan thing to do. "I like the decorations!" I squealed, Kacchan stood in the middle of the room with his arms crossed and legs spread shoulder-width apart in All Might's power pose. "I know right. It shows how awesome my quirk is!" Kacchan beamed, he was so cocky, I wondered how we even remained friends sometimes. I don't doubt that if Kyoka and I weren't around Kacchan would be unbearable. "Oi! We just have to wait for Kyoka, then we can start." Kacchan smirked. I nodded my head and took a seat on the sofa.
"Happy birthday, Kat!" Kyoka cheered as she walked into the living room with Kacchan's presents in her hands. I bounced off of the sofa and pulled Kyoka into a really tight hug which she returned, nobody could resist a hug from Izuku Midoriya. " 'Bout time you showed up earphone head!" Kacchan smirked in a teasing manner, Kyoka stuck her tongue out at Kacchan in retaliation. "I guess you don't want these gifts then." She said nonchalantly, with a shrug she turned her back to Kacchan. I watched in amusement as Kacchan apologized, something Kyoka and I had been forcing him to do, and begged Kyoka to stay and give him his presents. In the end, Kyoka stayed, as all three of us knew she would, and the adults came in so that the small birthday gathering could begin.
"Hello there Jiro." Masaru greeted Kyoka as the adult's filtered into the room and settled onto the sofa. Kyoka waved her hand mutely at Masaru's greeting, she was really shy when it came to speaking to Kacchan's parents and Shota. "Let's start then. Katsuki, you can open your presents from your friends, but DON'T be rude." Auntie Mitsuki warned Kacchan, at his mother's warning, Kacchan simply rolled his eyes and picked up the gift bag from Kyoka.
Kacchan pulled out the first present which was wrapped neatly in silver wrapping paper. The present was rather long and appeared to be a box. Kacchan didn't hesitate before violently ripping the paper from the gift to show a plain white box. When Kacchan opened the box, there were two wooden drumsticks, both of which had explosions on them with Kacchan's name in them. I looked on as Kacchan's eyes widened and filled with joy, even I admit that they looked really cool. I'm fairly certain he still has them to this day. Kacchan smiled at Kyoka and looked back into the bag, only the card remained. Kacchan opened the card and a piece of paper floated out, he looked at it in bemusement before carefully picking it up and looking at Kyoka before reading the paper. Kacchan's eyes widened before he did something very un-Kacchan like, he jumped up off the floor into Kyoka's lap. "Are you serious!? Thank you so much, Kyoka! Your amazing!" Kacchan shouted which caused Kyoka to flinch slightly due to her quirk. "Don't sweat it, Kat, you should really thank my parents, I had to beg them to give you free drum lessons," Kyoka responded with a gentle smile. I watched my two best friends squeeze each other, a very rare sight, and smiled to myself. When they finally stopped hugging and Kacchan thanked Mr and Mrs Jiro, Kacchan picked up his presents from me. Nerves rushed around my stomach, would he like it?
"What's the matter Izu? You look really nervous." Kacchan commented as he looked at me, I smiled weakly in return. "Nothing's wrong, just can't wait till you see what I got you!" I tried to say enthusiastically, keyword there being tried. Even to myself, I didn't sound convincing. Kacchan shrugged and looked at the 4 wrapped gifts in front of him appraisingly. "You didn't have to buy me so many gifts, you know that, right?" Kacchan chuckled slightly, a vivid blush rose to my cheeks which caused all of the adults to laugh. I didn't reply to him, instead, I stared at my lap, I felt kind of embarrassed. I heard the distinctive sound of wrapping paper being torn to shreds and cast aside as Kacchan ripped into the gift with no regard for the mess he was making. "Woah," he muttered quietly and in awe of the gift he just opened. I peeked through my hair to see that he had opened the travel book first. I knew how much Kacchan liked to hike, he dragged me and Kyoka along nature trails every other weekend. So, I had decided to buy him a book which documented the best nature trails, the most scenic places in Japan and the book also contained facts about wildlife. It told you what plants were safe to eat and which ones were poisonous, how to track animals and so on. The gift may not seem all that interesting, but what drew my eye to it was the exquisite looking lake which was pictured on the front. "Thank you Izu." Kacchan beamed, I shook my head with a smile, "Your welcome, but, you should probably save your thanks till you open the other three.", Kacchan nodded and reached for another gift.
The next gift which was savagely ripped open by my best friend wasn't that big, it was just a simple All Might manga which had come out not long before Kacchan's birthday. He had been complaining to me that he couldn't afford it because he had blown all of his money on a poster. When Kacchan saw the manga, he gave me a delighted smile before picking up the next gift.
I knew by the shape of the gift what it was. Kacchan pulled a rock band's ( I have no idea which band it was) most recent CD. I remember that when I was in the shop buying Kacchan's gifts that he had mentioned the band and how much he enjoyed their music. It had been an impulse buy. I could tell that Kacchan liked it by the way his eyes lit up. So far, he had liked all of the gifts, but the final gift was the one I was worried about.
"What's this?" Kacchan asked bemused as he held a black box in his hand. It looked like the sort of box an expensive necklace may come in. I lowered my head, I didn't want to meet his eyes. I heard the snap of the box lid being opened and closed my eyes in anticipation. "Izuku..." Kacchan's hushed voiced echoed around the silent room. "It's... so cool!". My eyes snapped open and I stared at Kacchan as he looked down at what was inside the box with tears sparkling in his eyes. The sight surprised me. Kacchan never cried. The last time I had seen him cry was when we were at my mum's funeral. He carefully took a friendship bracelet from the box. It wasn't expensive, actually, it was hand made by me. I had taken black and orange leather and plaited them together. I had then slipped three beads onto the leather, one had a K on it, one had an I on it and the middle bead was shaped like an explosion. Kacchan immediately tied the bracelet to his wrist and pounced on me. We hugged for a while, expressing our gratitude for one another. "Thank you Izuku." Kacchan whispered in my ear, I patted his back and smiled. I was glad he liked the gift. Kacchan got off of me and put on his angry face. "Now that the presents are out of the way," he stated matter of factly, "It's time for cake!". Kyoka and I cheered and rushed into the kitchen behind Kacchan, Auntie Mitsuki chastised us about running in the house as we zoomed through the hallway.
Hi! It has been decided that Tododeku will be happening in this book. Thank you to everybody who commented and helped me make up my mind. The ships I write about in this book won't be the main focus because I'm not the best at writing about relationships, despite the fact that I wrote a oneshot book all about relationships. This chapter doesn't seem as good as the others to me but that could just be because I'm stressing about the amount of school work I have to do at home because of the coronavirus. I hope this chapter is ok in your eyes. Anyway, thank you for reading and I hope you have a lovely day wherever you are.
