Chapter One: The Boy Without a Fairy

Sorry for the sort of boring intro. Zelda games always start off a bit slow and small, but it will get better, I promise!

Imagine - a land so bright and joyous, that wherever the Sun touches, life always seems to grow. A field so vast and lively that anyone could survive if you were ever lost. The grass so green and the sky so blue, that it's almost a tragedy when white, fluffy clouds litter the sea of blue above.

Paths of rich dirt and soil form naturally where the people and animals walk the most. Small hills and little bunches of forest lines scatter throughout the main field. A field so big, it could take days just to get to the other side. Hyrule Field.

Lined along the edges of Hyrule Field sit villages. The two main ones, Hyrule Castle Town and Kakariko Village, are where most of the people live. The two towns are very close together, as it only takes minutes to get from one to the other.

Everyone lives in peace as the King makes sure it stays that way. The two villages reign in the Northern part of Hyrule. Over in the far East, a hidden forest lies. No one can enter the forest, for it is guarded by a very ancient protector. Only the Kokiri, a race of forest dwellers, can see the wonders of the life there.

That is, until one fateful day nine years ago.

Sleeping in his soft bed, a ten year old Kokiri boy named Link is haunted by yet another nightmare. See, every Kokiri has a partner to protect them, so they never feel threatened or alone. They each have a guardian fairy. However, Link is the only Kokiri who does not have a fairy.

A drawbridge lowers slowly at first, but then completely slams to the ground after a couple seconds. Link stands in Hyrule Field, a small blue fairy hovering above his head. It starts thunderstorming, and the drops of water roll down Link's green hat. On the other side of the drawbridge, a white horse gallops. A figure in black sits in the back, protecting a small girl who sits in front of the black figure.

The small girl blinks away tears and Link catches her gaze. She has bright blue eyes just like him, but she has lighter blonde hair than he does. She wears a pink and white dress with the same color headpiece. The horse runs past Link and just like that, they are gone.

Another horse steps up behind Link. He turns around and sees a dark horse with a red mane. The rider wears a black cape, his yellow piercing eyes seem to stare into Link's soul. His tan skin tones the muscles on his arms more, and his hair shines a darker red than his horse's.

"Arg! I lost her!" The man stops his horse and turns toward Link. "You there, little kid, you must have seen a white horse pass through here. Which way did they go?"

Link says nothing, knowing in his heart that he must protect the small girl he saw. The man is having none of that. "Answer me!"

Link feels something heavy land on his shoulders, and he unstraps the sword and shield to hold them out protectively in front of him. "You won't hurt her!"

"Heheheh. You think you can protect them from me? You got guts kid, you're very funny." The man charges up what seems to be dark magic in his hand. "I like your attitude."

The man blasts his dark magic at Link, but he never feels the pain. Instead, he hears a high pitched scream next to him. It sounded like a girl.

In the deepest part of Kokiri Forest a very old and tall tree rests. The protector of the forest is his title, the one who keeps life safe. The Great Deku Tree, the tree that sits where most of the light shines into the forest.

"Navi, Navi, where art thou? Come hither." The Great Deku Tree summons the blue fairy to his presence.

A tiny, blue fairy flies up to the tree's eyes so he can see her. Her hair is white and her eyes sparkle blue. Her hair is wavy with a small braid strapped across the back of her head. Her wings are translucent blue and rounded with tiny designs imprinted on them. The fairy's skin is very fair, and the only thing that covers it is her short white and blue dress. Blue sparkles flow behind her as she flies. The center where her heart should be glows bright white and blue, almost as if it's her soul shining.

"What is it, Great Deku Tree?" The fairy's voice is high pitched because of her tiny vocal chords. However, it is just low enough to where it's not annoying when she's not yelling.

The Great Deku Tree's voice is filled with concern. "Navi, dost thou sense it? A great evil is plaguing this world of Hyrule."

"Yes... the other fairies can sense it as well, but we don't know what to do. We can not leave the forest." Navi repeats the law of the forest. No Kokiri or fairy may leave, and no one besides Kokiri or fairy may enter.

"The laws that kept us protected throughout centuries are about to be broken." The Great Deku Tree mumbles the first part, but proceeds in a confident voice. "The time has come for the boy without a fairy to begin his journey."

Navi's eyes widen at the news. "G-Great Deku Tree, that boy has been without a fairy ever since he came here at one years old. Kokiri usually receive their fairies when they are seven. Why doesn't he have one yet?"

"I may not tell you that answer. You and him will both find out when he is ready. For now, go to him. Fly, Navi, fly. The fate of the forest, nay, the world depends upon thee!"

The poor fairy still has a bunch of questions to ask, but she understands that time is now of the essence. Navi nods and flies through a canyon of trees until she reaches the main living area of the Kokiri.

Many houses made of hollowed out trees litter the ground. Many of what seem to be little children, all wearing green tunics and have orange hair, play in the forest. The area is set up like a playground with two pools of water, bridges, a secret hiding hole, and a waterfall.

Navi scans the many houses, looking for the one known to belong to the boy without a fairy. Finally, her eyes land on a house with a ladder leading up to the front door. She quickly flies up to it and enters. Her wings take her over to the sleeping boy, and she notices that he is shaking in his sleep.

"Hello, Link! I'm Navi. The Great Deku Tree has summoned you, so let's get going right now!" Link only turns so he is laying on his other side. Navi grunts and pulls on his dirty blonde hair. "Come on! Can Hyrule's destiny really depend on such a lazy boy?"

Link yawns, finally waking up. "Alright, I'm up! I couldn't go to sleep so I thought I'd sleep in."

After rubbing the sleep out of his eyes, Link finally realizes that there is a fairy in his house. His eyes widen and his heart starts pounding with joy. "A-A FAIRY?!"

Navi covers her pointy ears with her hand from Link's yelling. "Y-yes. My name is Navi, and the Great Deku Tree wants to talk to you. We have to get going!"

"Oh, right!" Link puts on his long, green hat which is the same color as his tunic, and slips on his brown boots. Navi sits on his shoulder, a bit wiped out from flying so fast. Link is so excited, that he practically leaps out of his house and down the ladder.

"Link! I was just coming to wake you up!" The boy in question turns to the speaker. It's a girl a smidge shorter than him with bright green hair, dark green tunic, and dark blue eyes. Her green fairy rests upon her pointed left ear, but quickly flies off when he spots Navi.

"Hi, Saria. The Great Deku Tree wants to talk to me. I have a fairy now!" Link gestures to his blue fairy and Saria looks at her in awe.

"That's amazing! I'm so glad a fairy finally came to you." Saria smiles, her ears perking up in happiness. "You better get to the Great Deku Tree. There are some Deku Baba plants along the way to him, so you might want to equip yourself with a sword and shield before you go."

"I know I have enough money to buy a shield. And I heard there's a weapon somewhere hidden in the secret tunnel." Link holds out eight blue rupees in his hand to show Saria.

The green haired girl nods, a smile still decorating her face, "I'll go back to my house and wait for you there."

"Alright, I'll see you later then!" Link waves and runs off to the shop.

It doesn't take long to buy the shield. It costed 40 rupees, which is only half of Link's savings. The shield is called the Deku Shield, and it is made out of forest wood. This means it's flammable, but Link knows he isn't going to be dealing with fire. The front of the shield is decorated with a red swirly pattern. The wood is so small and light, that Link can hold it in one hand.

Finding the sword was trickier. Link went into the secret tunnel, but it was like a small maze. He finally found the treasure chest after getting lost three times. Inside the chest was a small sword, as long as a dagger is to a grown adult. The handle has a ruby encrusted into it, connecting the blade to the handle. There are also golden etchings all around the hilt. The blade itself is shiny silver, and Link guesses it's made of steel.

Link crawls back out of the secret tunnel with his new prize strapped across his back. The Deku Shield is also hooked to the belt on his back. Link makes his way across Kokiri Forest, occasionally saying hello to the other Kokiris that cross his path.

A couple years ago, Link got this sudden urge to explore. He often visits the Lost Woods because that's the only place with adventure that he's allowed to go. Of course he has attempted to leave the forest before, but he's always been dragged back by a Kokiri. Why does he feel like there's something out there waiting for him? Why does he feel the need to explore the world? Why is he trapped here?

Link is brought out of his thoughts when he runs into a Kokiri. Link apologizes even though he didn't knock the kid over, but when he looks upward he wishes that he was paying attention to where he was going.

"Get your head out of the clouds, Mr. Fairyless!" Mido, a Kokiri who doesn't like Link at all, straightens his hat and stands tall so that he's nose to nose with Link. "Where are you even going?! This is the path to the Great Deku Tree!"

"Uh, yeah, he wants to see me..." At Link's words, Navi peeks her head out from under his hat.

Mido sees the fairy and his eyes widen in disbelief. "W-wha... you have a FAIRY?! A-and what's THAT?! Is that the Kokiri Sword? GOOD GRIEF!"

Link stumbles backward at the loudness of Mido's voice. Mido puts his hands on his head and walks around in circles almost crazily. "Well, even with all of that stuff a wimp is still a wimp, huh?"

Link's heart sinks at being called a wimp, but he still says nothing. He knows it's better to let Mido rant than to talk back to the guy. Mido stops walking, turns to Link, and points at him dramatically. "I, the Great Mido, leader of the Kokiri, will never accept you as one of us! Agh, shoot! How'd you get to be the favorite of Saria and the Great Deku Tree, huh?!"

Mido grumbles and walks off, making Link sign in relief. He doesn't really care if Mido accepts him into the Kokiri or not, but it would be nice if he wasn't such a bully all the time.

Link uses his sword to defeat some Deku Baba plants along the way, even though they aren't threatening at all. The small ten year old rounds a corner, Navi following right behind him, and they come face to face with the Great Deku Tree.
