(So hi...this is shittily written and super long, but oh well?...Sorry not sorry)
"Rachael?" Peter asks confused as he answers a call from her that he wired through his suit.
"Hey, sorry is this a bad time? I can always call back later..." Rachael says awkwardly. She always came across as more small and meek on the phone than she was in person.
"No, no...It's fine. You just happened to catch me while I was out on patrol." Peter answers.
"Oh okay...well you told me to call you if I found anything out about the chemical agent Oscorp is creating." Rachael says anxiously. Peter could almost see her fiddling nervously with one of her bracelets on the other side of the phone. "And I didn't really find anything helpful...but they are having an indoor press conference in an hour where they're said to begin releasing public information on the project. And I thought maybe you could get us in since you work for the Bugle and everything."
"Yeah, I can get us in there easy peasey. Plus I can cover the story, kill two birds at once." Peter agrees.
"Okay, I'll meet you outside the little pizza shop just before the Oscorp building." Rachael says.
"Its a date. Wait...I mean not like a date date, but like a day date...unless-unless you want it to be...but I think that might be unprofessional to call it a date. Not that I wouldn't want it to be a date it's just I-" Peter stumbled over his words.
"Goodbye, Peter." Rachael giggles before hanging up to save him from himself.
—
"Late like always." Rachael giggles at him as he runs towards her.
"Yeah, sorry about that. I got held up trying to-" Peter stumbles out, awkwardly rubbing the back of his neck as his camera swings back into his chest harshly from his abrupt stop.
"Whatever it was I'm sure it was a really good reason, but we really need to go if we want to get in." Rachael says pointing in its general direction.
"Right. What was I thinking?" Peter says trying to sound like he was joking, but it just came off as nervous.
—
As they headed inside the building everyone was quickly patted down and IDed before being released inside the building. They joined the crowd of people surrounding the press conference platform. Peter tucked his press pass back into his pocket, before snapping off a few pictures of the event around them. "So uh...you look nice today."
Rachael side eyed him, as he adjusted the exposure on his camera. "I don't look good everyday?"
"What? Uh no, no, no that's not what I meant at all. I was just saying-I just I Uh-I Just uh-really like that dress..." Peter says nervously, looking over at her quickly.
"Gee, calm down I was only teasing." Rachael giggles at him, elbowing him gently.
"Oh...right, right...no I know..." Peter says shaking his at himself. He has to admit it's pretty bad when even you can acknowledge how much of an idiot you're being.
Rachael giggled at him, letting an awkward silence fall over them in a very noisy room. Peter eventually put his camera around Rachael's neck seeing how bored she was and decided to take notes instead. "How much longer do you think it'll take to start?" Rachael asks impatiently.
"A few minutes? They're probably just waiting for more press to show up." Peter shrugs, not able to refrain from smiling at her. She looked so serious testing out his camera and it filled his heart with a strange warmth he hadn't felt in a long time. "Do you...do you maybe wanna like go out and get coffee after this? Or we could grab a bite to eat at that vegetarian place on 6th street you like, or you could come over my place and I'll cook..."
Rachael looked over at him trying to hide her smile. "Sure, yeah either one..."
Peter gave a lop sided smiled, opening his mouth to say something, but was interrupted by Norman beginning the press conference. They both looked up towards him as he approached the podium. Rachael tensed a bit and went to hold Peter's hand, but stopped herself just before they're hands made contact. Peter noticed and took her hand in his squeezing it gently. No matter how many years passed since the incident she still grew frightened and uncomfortable by Norman's presence, though she relaxed as the familiar warmth from Peter's hand spread into her skin.
"Welcome and thank you for taking the time to come in and see what my company has to offer. I know my past has been rocky, but I've never failed to have good ideas that benefit technology or weaponry advances have I? Even with the darkness that consumes me from time to time. I'm glad to see you've all still manage to keep your faith in me. Now what we have to show you today is not for the faint of heart. We have created a form of chemical weaponry though it is not to be used against people, but to be used for them. With this agent you can rewrite the human genome and make someone cancer or illness free. You can really write your body to do anything with it, but the product will be heavily monitored to only be beneficial not harmful. Don't believe me? I wouldn't either if I were in your position, but if you wouldn't mind directing your attention to the platform to my left. We'll show you just how well it works." Norman says gesturing towards the demonstration. He stepped over to a small console where he began tapping away at a screen, an employee of his stepped onto the platform. Norman took a vile from a case being held out for him by an employee and transferred it to a syringe. He stepped onto the platform and injected it into the volunteer. "Now if you observe the monitor behind me, you'll see his body is being rewritten to make himself cancer free."
Peter started to freeze up as the familiar hair standing tingle became prominent in the back of his head. He glanced around quickly noticing the employee started to turn a strange shade of red that swirled around under his skin. "Get down!" Peter shouted thowing himself onto Rachael to cover her. Before they could even hit the ground the employee burst into a bomb like explosion. Everyone was thrown back and fire engulfed the room, trapping people in as the ceiling and walls started to cave in.
Peter smacked his head on the ground when they tumbled back from the momentum he used to protect Rachael combined with the power from the blast. Rachael was stuck underneath him and trapped by the large pieces of ceiling that had fallen down around them. There was enough space between the floor and the debris they were trapped under for her to crawl out from under him. His unconscious body lays beside her as she looks down at him concerned, the heat from the building burning up starting to make itself very evident to her. She flipped him over to look at him and noticed Peter had a large cut on the side of his head, which meant a probable concussion and internal bleeding from the blast was always possible.
"Peter? Peter!" Rachael says shaking him a bit and wiping the blood off of his face. "Oh, come on tiger. You gotta help me here, I'm not gonna make it much longer in this kinda heat."
He didn't respond which made her throat sink into her stomach. The debris around them started to make a loud cracking noise. She gripped his hand tightly and for once didn't feel the significantly higher warmth that usually radiates off of him. The heat around them was starting to get to her and the light headedness started to set in, a few more minutes and she'd be unconscious as well.
"Peter? Peter, please. Please wake up. Peter if you can hear me squeeze my hand, open you eyes, do anything. Please..." She let go of his hand and began breathing heavily out of panic, which wasn't helping her situation due to the smoke and debris filling the air. "Please wake up. Peter...I-I can't loose you too..." Rachael started to cry against his chest, she really didn't know how to get them out of this one.
She slipped her hand down and into his hand, though he didn't grip it back supportively like she was hoping he would. He felt lifeless and that terrified her, she hadn't really known how she felt about him since they'd started to talk again, but if she learned anything today it's that she's still very much in love with him. If they died here today something she would always regret is that she didn't get the chance to tell him that she loved him, that if he'd let her she wanted to be with him again, permanently.
Her head was pounding and the heat was making her nauseous, her eyes started to involuntary close as her sight got foggy. She started to blackout against Peter's chest, she saw a small light shine through the debris. The world around her went dark as a small hole began forming to the outside.
