Mourning Day

(This story is getting so long and I'm sorry. I'm also pretty sure no one reads this so why am I️ apologizing)

Ultimate Fallout pt. 8

"What does that mean? What does that mean!" May says shocked and angry. "How is it your fault my nephew is dead?"

"Please- I just-I just wanted to say I'm sorry." Steve sighs.

"What did you do?" May asks angrily.

"The day he died...I told him he wasn't ready. I told him he was a child and that he hasn't yet earned the right to wear the uniform. And the-the gunshot- the wound that eventually killed him...It was meant for me. He jumped in front of it to save me." Steve says weakly a few tears escaping his eyes.

"So after you emasculated him, even though he had proved himself a hero over and over and over again. After you told him he wasn't worthy...he saved your life? Is that what you're telling me?" May says her anger building.

"Yes, ma'am." Steve says full on crying at this point.

"He worshipped you people. You know that, don't you? He thought of you as-as the knights at the round table. He put on the costume to be like you. He wanted to earn a place at your table. And you people come into his life-he- you promised to help him? And what did you do? Nothing! He was fine before he met you! He was doing fine! In fact he was doing better! He tried to become a part of your family but you're not a family. Families don't tear each other down, they don't manipulate each other. He would have been better off if he had never met any of you." May yelled angrily lifting up her hand and slapping him across the face.

Steve sighed moving his gaze to the floor unphased by her action. Tony gasped trying to place his hand on her shoulder but she turned away and ran back down the aisle towards the exit. She collapsed to the ground outside as all the news sources outside started to take pictures and record what was happening. Rachael ran after her having watched the entire interaction, she kneeling down next to her.

"May...come back inside...please May..." Rachael says softly grabbing her shoulders gently.

"Mrs. Parker." A rough male voice spoke out. May glanced up at him. "My name is J. Jonah. Jameson. Your nephew worked for me. We've met before do you remember?"

"I-" May stutters she was a train wreck. Why was she a train wreck? She's gone through these things before. Why did this one matter so much?

"Can I help you to your seat? Do you want to go back inside or is there somewhere I can take you?" J.J.J asks softly, more caring than Rachael had ever seen him.

"I don't- I don't know what to do..." May sobs.

"If I may I think you'll regret not going back inside." Jonah says helping her back to her feet as Rachael waved off the media.

"We come here today to pay our respects. We do this knowing that there is some comfort to be found in our gathering together- here, among family and friends. As, in remembrance, we look back at who Peter was, and find peace in knowing he is in a better place now." The service had began.

Rachael shifted in her seat her anger at the situation growing. MJ places her hand over hers squeezing it gently, Flash glances over at her sadly. She sat between them, the last three people of their friend group that are still alive. Rachael looked around at all of the people she had never seen in her life that had gathered in the church. The only ones she new were sitting around her. As the service continued her anger boiled to the point where she shot up heading into the aisle and quickly walking out of the church. Everyone turned and watch the young heart broken girl run away.

"We're on TV right now. Dad's gonna give me shit for this later but I can't do this. We all have our limits." Rachael thinks as she walks down the pathway angrily, freezing some of the news cameras that were doing interviews or filming live, as she walked towards the nearby park. "They're disgusting. All of them. My boyfriend- somebody I loved more than words can describe, is dead in there. He's never coming back. And what are they doing? Putting on a show. All Peter ever wanted to do was the right thing- And all they ever did was try to hurt him. The whole time, they shot at him and called him names in the paper and tried to arrest him. Now they want to stand there and tell everyone how great they thought he was, what a hero they thought he was? It's sick. Just a bunch of people trying to make themselves look good in front of a camera."

" 'He was a kid, I didn't know.' Because you never bothered to ask. You were too busy hitting the gym or shopping or watching TV. Trying to sell more newspapers or running your stupid little secret missions- Bottom line, you never cared about him. If you really did, well- If you did, then he wouldn't be dead. And the worst part of this is, they're all acting this changes everything! Like he's going to inspire them or something. This doesn't change anything! Peter would tell them to stop fighting each other, Peter would tell them to stop hunting mutants. To stop hating someone just because they're different from you." Rachael thinks as she rushes through the park trying to calm down. "But no, they don't want to stop doing any of that, do they? Might cost them some votes. They just want a martyr to trot out when it's convenient for them. See, nobody wants a living hero- they might say or do something people don't like- or maybe just remind them of all the things they're not and never will be. Dead ones are way easier to deal with. You get to look like a good person by talking about how sad you are. Maybe you get to point a finger at someone else and say they're to blame for it. So me? I'm done trying to be a hero. I know Peter would probably tell me how I shouldn't give up, how I should always keep trying, no matter what. But I can't give them what they really want. I don't wanna die. I want a nice normal life. I wanna go to college, be close to my sisters, and hang out with what's left of my friends."

Rachael stopped at a bench finding Johnny sitting on it with his head in his hands, she was so upset she hadn't even noticed he didn't show up to the funeral. "Johnny?"

He sniffles looking up at her. "Hey, sis. What are you doing out here? The funeral isn't over yet."

Rachael sat down on the bench next to him leaning her head on his shoulder. He wiped his eyes trying to be strong for her. "I couldn't handle it..." She says trying not to cry.

"Me either...I thought all this was cool, you know? Even when I was freaking out, even when it looked like we might get killed or something, I thought it was still pretty great- being a big super hero and all. Then I met you and Peter and it all felt like it was finally- It's not cool is it? It just sucks. We're gonna keep running until they find us, and lock us up somewhere and do tests and experiments on us until we die. That's what going to happen isn't it? Kids like us don't get happy endings." Johnny sighs his held together facade failing him.

"God, I️ hope not..." Rachael sighs letting her tears start to fall as Johnny turned towards her hugging her tightly as she sobbed into his shoulder, he let his tears go as well. They stayed like that for as long as they needed letting go of everything they had been holding in since the incident.
