Berlin Was So Not The Drama
"How can you betray me like that? I'm your father." Tony says, looking at the girl from the pilots seat of the quinjet.
"Just because you're my father does not mean, I have to agree with you on everything." Rachael says, watching her foot dig into the floor, anxiously.
"It should mean you at the very least have enough faith in me to make the correct decision." Tony says.
"You make decisions for yourself! Were you even thinking about me when you created and signed those accords? Because if I had agreed to sign that it would have revealed my powers, that we've spent so long trying to hide from the world, and if the government ever thought I was a threat they could take me away! And what could you do to stop it? Nothing! Because you signed your soul away!" Rachael huffs at him.
"Kid, I would never-" Tony starts.
"You would never what? Never let that happen because it's already happening! It's been barely a week and they are already forcing you to go after an innocent man and you're just doing it without even thinking about the possibility that maybe Steve and them are not the ones who are wrong!" Rachael exclaims.
"I think I'm going to need more proof than the words of an easily manipulated hormonal fifteen year old who was practically abducted by someone who is supposed to be the most responsible man in America, before I ever believe that man is innocent!" Tony argues back.
"Stop pretending like you didn't do the same fucking thing! You found a random ass kid from my high school, whose in my grade, mind you, and brought him to fucking Berlin to fight a bunch of professional superheroes who are, for the most part, triple or quadruple our age! Both of you put minors in danger! So stop pretending like you two didn't do exactly the same thing!" Rachael huffs, pointing at Peter on the other side of the jet.
Peter's eyes widened, praying to not be dragged into this argument. He was just watching this whole thing going down, curled up on the seat in a fetal position.
Tony stayed silent for a moment, spinning his chair around to face forward, before speaking again. "You're grounded."
"Yeah... That's fair..." Rachael sighs, getting up from her seat near the front and moving closer to the back.
Peter observed her for a minute before getting up and sitting beside her. "Is it always like this at your house?" He laughed, trying to break the ice.
"Yeah, actually..." Rachael sighs, looking over at him.
Peter coughed, rubbing the back of his neck awkwardly. "I wasn't expecting that to actually be the answer."
"You always have been blind to what's going on in other people's lives." Rachael mumbles.
"What do you mean?" Peter asks, looking at her profile as she stared out the window.
"I mean you've been trying to rival me for years without realizing that I'm not competing against you I'm just trying to get my father to be proud of me. Or to even notice me as a human being and not just a disappointing clone of my mom." Rachael says.
"I just thought you didn't like me." Peter responds.
"I didn't like you, because you didn't like me. And well I guess because everyone thinks you're kinda a loser..." Rachael adds.
"Do you still think I'm a loser?" Peter asks.
"Well, I don't know! I'm still trying to process the fact that you're a fucking superhero, on top of everything else that's happened today!" Rachael says, clearly starting to lose her cool.
"Shit, yeah... that was a stupid question sorry..." Peter says, looking at the floor. "If it makes you feel any better, I also find this to be pretty hard to process."
"I can see why, it's not everyday that Ironman shows up at your doorstep and whisks you away to a foreign country where Captain America almost kills you..." Rachael scoffs, at just how reckless these adults were.
"I gotta say though, it was pretty cool." Peter laughs, slightly.
Rachael smiles a bit. "Yeah, I guess today did have some highlights. Like finally someone believed in me enough to let me actually do something with my abilities."
"They've never done that before?" Peter asks.
"No, I've been spending the last year begging someone to let me become a hero, to let me do something good with this burden of an ability I have. And to just maybe prove my worth to my dad and... maybe to myself." Rachael explains. "Today was the first day anyone has ever even thought I would be helpful. Even if it was just to manipulate my dad... Someone still saw me as me."
"I-I get that..." Peter nods.
"You do?" Rachael asks, looking over at him.
"Yeah... when I got these powers, I figure that now, maybe someday people would be able to look at me and think of me as just another person, instead of the kid whose parents died or who's guardians were too poor to afford to buy him new clothes or a better laptop, or the latest phone model. Or the kid who had to be smart to go anywhere in life, or the kid who's uncle died because of his stupid decisions. I've always just wanted to be me, but I was born into circumstances that would never allow that..." Peter says, looking out the window as he spoke.
"Wow, I- I feel like you just spoke a language I never thought anyone else would ever understand." Rachael laughs, slightly looking over at him. "I finally feel-"
"Seen." Peter finishes with her, they smiled at each other slightly before both looking out the window again. They sat in comfortable silence for a long moment before speaking again.
"Peter?" Rachael asks, not looking away from the jet window. "How long have you had your powers?"
"About six months give or take." Peter responds, looking over at her with some surprise. It was the first time she'd ever referred to him as Peter.
"Wasn't that around when your-?" Rachael gasps softly, looking over at him.
"Yeah... yeah... it was..." Peter sighs, looking down at the floor.
"Was that your moment?" Rachael asks.
"My moment?" Peter questions, looking up at her confused.
"Yeah, every mutant has like a moment that, I guess, sorta awakens their powers. It's usually a pretty tragic experience..." Rachael explains.
"Oh, no... I-I'm not a mutant... I got bit by a spider and then well... this happened..." Peter responds, earning a confused look from her. "But I guess... that was kinda my moment, though. When I knew what I needed to do..."
"Oh..." Rachael nods, returning her gaze out the window.
"What was-... What was your moment? If you don't mind me asking?" Peter says, observing her profile carefully.
"Oh, um... Mine was the first time my dad was supposedly dead... You know when he got kidnapped in 2008?" Rachael says, her voice soft and broken. "I was seven."
Peter watched her with a gently gaze, waiting for her to say more.
"It was when everyone was trying to figure out whether to put me into foster care or not... trying to figure out what they were supposed to do with me now... when I was suddenly more alone than I had ever been." Rachael explains, her voice fading here and there.
"You know I have never met someone with nearly as messed up as a life as I've had. It's kind of incredible." Peter smiles, slightly looking over at her.
"Incredibly strange and slightly concerning, I'd say." Rachael giggles, a bit.
They just smiled at each other for a moment a strange, but comfortable warmth spreading between them. Footsteps approaching them finally broke their stares to find Tony standing in front of them.
"So, I've thought it over and you're both going to start training, every other day, for four hours a day, with the top shield agents-" Tony says, looking down at the pair.
"You're shitting me!?" Rachael gasps her mouth falling open.
"No, you start on Monday." Tony responds.
"Th-Thank you, Mr. Stark!" Peter spits out fumbling over his words as his brain tries to process this new information.
"Yeah, yeah. You can thank me later, kid. I'm just trying to make sure what happened out there today, doesn't happen again." Tony responds, starting to walk back to the front of the jet.
The teens looked at each other smiling excitedly. "Well, Spider-Man, this seems like the start of a very strange friendship." Rachael giggles, holding her hand out for him to shake, teasingly.
He took her gloves hand in his. "Well, Frostbite, it seems like we're going to be spending a lot of time together. Become best friends is to be expected."
"Oh, best friends, huh?" Rachael smirks up at him.
"Yeah, best friends..." Peter smiles brightly at her.
