Secret Admirer
(Fajī's POV)
One of the best days of my life started like most of the other days: normally. I had woken up, showered, brushed (and even flossed) my teeth, and got changed for school.
Although it was less comfortable, I kept my cat ears and tail unexposed, keeping myself in a normal human form. After braiding my hair back, I stare at myself in the bathroom mirror.
A golden-eyed blonde with faint freckles and jagged bangs was looking back at me. She was wearing a typical orange knee-length dress with matching orange boots. Having her hair pulled back into a long braid showed off a small but simple cross necklace.
I smiled with satisfaction and rushed out of the bathroom, in order to give my best friend, a green-haired girl named Una, a turn. She seemed abnormally giddy for someone who'd just woken up, but I shrug it off.
After downing a glass of orange juice and a peanut butter bagel, the gang and I got to school. I look around at my friends as they head off to do different things.
Kokoro, with her duffel bag in hand, was off to go drop it off in the locker room.
Ita and Kashi had gone off to find their friends, wanting a quick chat before class started.
Mazenta had an art kit clutched to her chest, eagerly bounding off to the art room.
And Una had ran off before I even got a chance to see where she was going.
Making my way over to my locker, I quickly cracked my combination and swung the door open. Much to my surprise, a single folded piece of paper fluttered down from the inside of the locker. I delicately pick it up, and I unfold it, curious about what it read. It was typed up rather than handwritten, but the font was cute and heartfelt.
I've loved you longer than I've ever known.
You're gorgeous beyond compare.
4 P.M. sharp behind the school.
Won't you meet me there?
~ a secret admirer
My jaw dropped and I felt my cheeks get warm. A secret admirer?! Who would possibly be in love with me?
All morning I pondered on who it could be, looking at guys one by one and picking them out, but then figuring out a reason why they wouldn't be in love with me. My morning classes dragged on and on, my curious heart barely being able to wait until four o'clock.
Finally, the lunch bell rang, and I met up with the girls to talk about the letter. Una sat next to me like always, while Kokoro, Mazenta, and Ita sat across from us. I read them the letter before dropping it in the middle of the table, showing off its computer-typed message.
"Dang," Kokoro began. "They were smart by typing the letter. Otherwise we could've figured out the handwriting..."
"I've been thinking about possible guys that could be candidates, and I've narrowed it down to..." I pause to think, keeping count on my fingers. "Brett... Wesley... Alex... and Kashi."
Ita slammed her fist on the table, rattling all of the silverware for a split second. She was laughing so hard chocolate milk was spilling out of her nose. Una quickly grabbed the love letter from the middle so it could avoid the milky mess.
"I-I'll get some napkins," Mazenta said, hurrying off. I could tell she was suppressing laughter.
Una handed the note to me. "I think Kashi is unlikely," she grinned. I take the note and slide it into my pocket.
"Let's just hope he's very nice and cute!" Mazenta said cheerfully as she came back with a handful of napkins. She and Kokoro began to clean up the large puddle of chocolate milk off of the table.
Ita sang, "Kashi and Fajī sittin' in a tree! K-I-S-S-I-N-G!"
Una grabbed onto my wrist, knowing I was resisting the urge to playfully slap Ita across the face. I look at Una and she shakes her head disapprovingly.
She released my arm and after about three seconds of peace and tranquility, I socked Ita in the arm just as she finished with, "Then comes Kashi with the baby carriage!"
Five mostly-empty lunch trays and a pile of soaked napkins later, the bell rang for the next class. Like the morning classes, the afternoon ones went by way too slowly. I could perfectly imagine an angel choir appearing when the final bell rang through the school at a quarter to four.
Nervousness swarmed through my body as I packed up my things in my backpack. I felt goosebumps lined up and down all over me as I made my way to the back door of the school.
What if he was a guy I didn't like? What if he was weird? Or creepy? Or absolutely disgusting?
Glancing down at my phone, I watched the time go from 3:59 to 4:00.
Taking a deep breath, I open the school's back door.
I feel the warm spring sun on my shoulders, and I look around.
Standing right in front of me was a girl with long, green hair. Her back was facing me, but it was obvious who it was.
"Una?" I asked.
I heard her let out a soft chuckle. She turns to face me, her green eyes like beautiful shining emeralds. She was holding a single daylily in her hands.
"You're my secret admirer?" I asked, smiling.
Una handed me the daylily, looking down at the ground and blushing. "You're the only one I've had eyes for, Fajī."
Tears of joy welling up in my eyes, I step forward and hug her. I laughed, despite the tears streaming down my face.
"Why didn't you say so sooner?"
