Backstory Time: Kokoro

(This one is for horse_lover_1234)

(Kokoro's POV)

I don't remember most of my childhood.

Only small portions of time made up for it.

I was a robot, created by a lonely scientist. The scientist had a nine-year-old son who was constantly bullied at school, and was just alone as his father. He wished for a friend to play with.

And that's where I came in.

---

"Kiseki had been activated," the man says as I open my electronic eyes.

"Can I see, Dad?" the boy asks. He is about my height, with dark skin and shaggy purple hair. He looks as if he is about to burst out in excitement of my presence.

"She's finished... I believe," the man replies.

"She looks amazing!" the boy yelps as he hugs his father. "Thank you!"

I just watch, expressionless. They act so bizarre.

The boy holds out his hand. "Hi! I'm Taimu! What's your name?"

I open my mouth and I shake his hand, but I realize that I have no name.

"Oh... you have no name?" Taimu says.

I nod.

"Hmm... I'm gonna call you Kokoro!" Taimu grins. "That means 'heart' in Japanese."

"Kokoro," I repeat.

"Why don't you go play with Kokoro?" the man tells Taimu. "I don't know how long she'll be active."

"C'mon! I know where we can go!" Taimu grabs my cold, metallic hand and pulls me out of the dull garage.

Outside was full of color and warmth. However, the fresh green grass and blue sky had no effect on me. I couldn't feel any emotion.

The rest of the day goes by in a blur, full of playing pretend and running around. He was laughing and smiling the entire time.

My face remained expressionless.

We soon find ourselves on a tall hill, overlooking the town. The sun was just setting behind the buildings. I'm sitting next to Taimu on the soft grass.

"Sunsets are always so pretty. Don't you think, Kokoro?" he asks.

"Very colorful indeed," I say, my eyes fixed on the scarlet sun.

Taimu continues talking, but my vision begins to become blurry. My balance is becoming off. What is happening to me?

Suddenly, I collapse on the grass, feeling every bolt in my being slow down to a crawl. The world around me is becoming darker and darker each second.

"K-Kokoro!" Taimu cries, tears beginning to form in his eyes. "Are you okay?"

This was all I heard before blacking out completely.

---

"Welcome back, our little Kiseki," the man's face greets me. Taimu is next to him, looking much older than he had in our previous meeting.

"How long has it been?" I ask.

"Three years and five months," Taimu replied, hugging me. I hug back, still feeling expressionless again.

---

I met with Taimu two more times after the second one, each one emotionless and ending with me powering off around sunset.

Much like his image was changing with age, the scientist decided to change my design as well to make me forever compatible for Taimu. I didn't mind though; it was one things that was interesting about being powered-on.

Weeks before my fifth power-on, I heard mumblings coming from Taimu and his father. His voice sounded old and weak now, while Taimu's was now rich and low.

"Taimu, I've been meaning to tell you that this will be my last upgrade toward Kokoro. This time, I have designed a heart for her. Therefore, she will be able to feel real emotion," he said excitedly. "She will truly be a friend by then, and maybe even be on for a longer amount of time."

"This is great! I can't wait to see her again," Taimu replied. "I miss her so much."

---

I feel myself being powered on, electricity and blood surging through my body. I look at myself, realizing that a pair of bright blue headphones were perched fittingly on my ears. A snug purple jacket and sneakers accompany my blue jeans.

This time, it is only Taimu who greets me. He is slightly taller than me, and his shaggy purple hair consists of a single cowlick on the back of his head. He wears a neat tuxedo and a red bow tie.

"Hey, little Kiseki," he smiles.

And to my surprise, I smile back for the first time in my existence. My electronic heartbeat felt warm and thoughtful.

I could feel.

I hug him tightly, feeling my emotions take over. He happily hugs me back.

When we break apart, I ask him, "Where is your father?"

Slowly and solemnly, his gaze meets mine as he says "He passed away last week... When he told me about your last update, I didn't think he meant it like..." Taimu then began to cry.

My humble creator? Dead? I feel tears of my own slide down my cheeks.

At the same time, I was still smiling a little. I could feel happiness! I could feel pain!

Does this make me human now?

---

It has now been two years since my creator died. Taimu is now nineteen, and my designated age is now seventeen.

He and I sit on a hill, watching the sunset like we did all the time as kids. I have not powered off since my last upgrade. Taimu thinks my newfangled emotions keep my system going.

"Kokoro? Do you remember the first time we watched the sunset together?" Taimu asks me, placing his hand on mine.

"Yes," I reply. "I'm sad that I wasn't able to appreciate the beauty of them back then. I'm glad they never change, though."

"There's other things in this world that have never changed for me since then either," Taimu told me, looking at me rather than the orange sky.

"Like what?" I ask.

He puts his finger under my chin, turning my head to meet his purple-eyed gaze. "My love for you."

And that's when he planted a kiss on my lips.
