Care (Naoka)

[A/N] This is for my sibby @RavenFire2023. Surprise! I hope this brightens your day! I love you so much!

Honoka still wasn't used to the waterbed. It was so squishy and she felt like she was sinking into it. At home, the bed had been very, very firm, and it wasn't too much softer in the killing game. But despite how unstable the bed made her feel, she was starting to love how warm the blankets were and how big the windows were. However, no matter how squishy or warm the bed was, or how much she adored sleeping in late, nothing could keep her glued to it for long.

Because Nao was in the next room over, and he needed her.

She flew out the room, bare toes dancing along the shag carpeting and Cheer Bear in tow. She knocked cheerfully. "Good morning, Hon!" he greeted.

"Is it locked?" she asked. She was rather proud of the fact that she know understood how locked doors worked.

"No, it's unlocked. Come in!" She opened the door and rushed in, sitting next to him to wrap him in an embrace.

"Bestest of mornings!" she responded, beaming. He was slightly embarrassed-- they both had morning breath and bedhead-- but he knew she didn't even process it. To her, he was Nao, the knight to her princess, perfect no matter what. Even with a busted leg from an ice skating accident, he was still... perfect. He could see it in her eyes. "Nao! Cheer and I have a surprise for you this morning!"

"A surprise?" He blinked, already surprised at the mere mention of one existing.

"Yes! I need to go get it ready, but we couldn't be leaving you alone too late so I decided to say hello first! Care will keep you company!" Honoka pressed the stuffed bear into his hand and was gone as quickly as she had arrived.

"Just you and me, huh, Care?" Nao vocalized. Instantaneously, he began to feel embarrassed that he'd just talked to his girlfriend's plushie while he was alone, but he couldn't help himself. Of course, Care didn't respond back, but he persisted. "Hon and her family are pretty great, huh? If it wasn't for them... I'd be alone right now, probably. Alone and practically useless..." He stewed in his insecurities for a moment before brightening up. "But I have value! I know that I do, even with a broken leg. She proves it to me every day." He examined the cast on his right leg, covered in cute little marker drawings of bubbles and teddy bears and stars. She'd done everything to keep him comforted.

Eventually, the door was knocked upon once again. "Is it locked now?"

"Of course not, Hon," he informed her patiently, a warm smile on his face. The door opened once again. He was surprised to find that Hon's mom was also there, holding a kettle of hot water.

"Tada!" Honoka winked, walking closer so that he could see what was in her hands.

"Wait! Is that the oatmeal with the dino eggs?!" he asked, thrill rising in his heart.

"Yes, yes! I saw it in the market and thought of you! Cause I know how much you love dinosaurs!" She held the tray with the bowl in an iron grip.

Honoka's mom laughed, a twinkling sound that her daughter inherited. "We didn't want you to miss the show." She poured the hot water into the oatmeal, and the three watched in wonder as the eggs "hatched" and vibrant dinosaurs emerged.

"Hon, you're so amazing!" he cried out adoringly.

"I am? I mean, yes, I am! But that is not even the best part!" she revealed, beside herself with excitement. His green eyes were sparkling and it made her heart feel fuzzy and her face feel hot.

"What's the best part?" he inquired, further taken by surprise. Honoka proudly grabbed the present from right outside his bedroom, needing both arms. It was a giant, squishy dinosaur plushie. His face lit up in delight and Honoka's heart leapt. It was practically three-quarters his height, and, as she relinquished it to him, he squeezed it and pressed his face to it in utter elation. "Thank you! Thank you, thank you, thank you," he repeated, beckoning her closer so that he could plant a quick, exuberant kiss on her lips. She couldn't help but giggle, feeling the fuzziness spread to her tummy.

"You are my favorite Di-Nao-Saur," she announced, looking away with a rosy blush painting her cheeks.

"I'll leave you two lovebirds to it," Honoka's mother announced. "Thank you again, Nao, so much. You allowing us to live here has really revolutionized our lives."

"Well, of course... you guys have revolutionized mine."

"Mom. What do you mean by lovebirds? We are not birds?" she asked, examining her arms to check that no feathers had spontaneously sprouted.

"It's just a saying. I'm saying you two clearly love each other lots and are a good couple, Honoka," she explained, running her hand through her daughter's pink hair affectionately.

"Oh! I see! Then yes, we are lovebirds. We are... love sparrows!" She flapped her arms as an example, feeling very satisfied.

Nao laughed slightly and then started flapping his own arms. Honoka's mom chuckled affectionately and then left the room, shaking her head in joking disapproval.

Nao looked at his cast one more time, just for a moment, but everything was okay now. He may have been out of commission when it came to what he loved doing, but that didn't diminish his worth or the joy in his life. Everything was just fine. "Are you looking at my drawings?" she asked.

"Yes. And now I'm looking at you," he nodded, staring at her beautiful face.

"We should color! I'll go get my coloring book!"

"Doing anything with you is fun."

So the two spent their morning coloring as Nao laid in the dino plushie's arms. Yeah. Life was good.
