a child of the church that worshipped the walls and the safety. they give that up leaving the church due to mistreatment within and joined the scouts. 

as a kid, he didn't see himself living outside of the safety of his home. his parents never told him to have any hope of being outside of the walls. the only friends he had was his little sister and hange zoe, hange gave him the hope of joining the scouts. yet once he had told his parents about him joining the scouts, the cycle of abuse started getting worse. the church started considering every one of his actions a sin to the point they would lock him in the confessions after hours. they thought that berating him would help make elias come clean. it only got worse when he was home because his mother would lock him in a closet for hours when the church told them that they suspected he was gay. 

(elias started to self-harm once he had started getting locked into small rooms. the only person who knew of this was hange, he only stopped for them when they found out.)

that still never stopped elias from leaving. it felt like freedom the second he was outside of the walls. after one mission though when the scouts had gotten nothing but dead comrades, elias' father snapped and started beating him senselessly. the excuse was that it was his fault for his comrades dying against the titans. the abuse continued until henrik kicked him out of his home, so he went to hange to seek refuge. his little sister was the only part of his family that he spoke to after his disownment. 

his sister had the same dreams of him. she desperately wanted to leave the safety of the walls to see the outside world with him, they had talked about running away to explore once the titans were gone. yet the second their parents heard about their precious daughter planning on joining the regiments as well, henrik murdered her out of fit of rage. elias knew his parents murdered her. it was his fault she was dead. he shouldn't have filled her head with those thoughts til she was safe with him. he stopped speaking all together until he met levi, farlan, and isabel.
