Backstory: There are a lot of unknowns about Kit's origin and most of it is shrouded in mystery. The first records anyone could find on her are that at five years old she was the foster daughter of the Carington family. The Caringtons were a small family of three who decided to take on a foster, that child ended up being Kit. Before that Kit claims she can't remember her life before living with them. It is important to note that the Caringtons lived in a very bigoted town in Utah called Heatherfield which was a "mutant free" place. The Caringtons raised Kit along with their son Jeff who was about five years older than Kit and not interested in having a sister. Jeff was a cruel foster brother who picked on Kit any chance he could get, and his behavior was rarely corrected by his parents. In fact the Caringtons didn't seem overly invested in Kit at all. Their parenting was often cold and distant. The two were usually busy with work. They also had a bad habit of taking their frustrations out on each other or the kids. It seemed like the Cartington home was always filled with yelling. Other than the rough home life Kit assumed her life was relatively normal, she wished for a better life, but the Caringtons always convinced her it could be worse. She believed them when they said her life could've been worse until one day. When she was about ten something changed. The world was somehow different, she could sense things, feel things that were different in the world. It was her mutation. She began to develop the ability to sense people with the X-gene (mutation gene). At first she couldn't figure out what it was until her school went on an out of town field trip. It was on that field trip when she first realized what had changed in her. As they were passing through a busy museum in a big city near Heatherfield she noticed a man and his eyes were glowing. It freaked her out at first, after all she was only ten at the time so she told her friends and they looked at her like she was crazy, claiming that the man's eyes were normal. So, she brushed it off, but then she saw another person with glowing eyes, and another after that. She decided it had to be real so she left her school group only for a second and went to ask one of the people with glowing eyes what it was. The woman she asked looked confused at first, but the more she looked in the woman's eyes something occurred to her, the woman had powers. When Kit asked the woman if she had powers she smile and nodded her head. The woman then said these words that would stick with Kit for the rest of her life: "Yeah, I've got powers and it looks like you do too" It was then that Kit realized what she could sense, what was different about her, she had the ability to detect mutants. It only took her so long to figure it out because Heatherfield was infamously known for being bigoted and even hostile toward mutants, so as a result no mutants ever really stuck around. Once Kit realized her powers she wasn't sure what to do, so she told her foster parents. She was scared at first, thinking they may hate her for it, but she didn't know what else to do. However, when she told them they didn't look surprised. In fact, they didn't even look phased or caught off guard, as if they were expecting it. From that day on everything got so much worse. Anytime anyone one new came to Heatherfield the Caringtons forced Kit to meet them and tell them if the new comers were mutants. At first it just seemed weird until they actually did come across a mutant. Kit told her foster parents just like they trained her to do, then that person was taken away by force. They screamed yelled for help and Kit couldn't understand what was really going on, but the terrified eyes of that mutant as they were dragged away haunted Kit. After that incident she told her foster parents she didn't want to meet and new people anymore, but the Caringtons forced her and threatened her. Day by day her foster family grew colder and colder to her. At first it started off as neglect, but anytime she tried to reach out to them for anything they'd snap saying things like "why'd we have to get stuck with this little monster?" or "why'd they make us suffer?" They also resorted to calling her horrible names like monster, stupid creature, freak. Life became bleak. Kit was left alone most of the time and hated her life. Despite it all she couldn't build up the courage to leave. She didn't know where to go. Life continued like this for almost two years. One night after hours of not being able to sleep Kit had gotten up and went to the kitchen to warm up something to drink to hopefully help her sleep. She was exhausted but only tossed and turned restlessly. On her way to the kitchen her half asleep foster brother Jeff bumped into her and tripped over her landing on top of her and busted his lip. The whole incident pissed him off and he snapped. He began beating her all the while calling her a freak, blaming her for ruining his life. It was as if all his pent up frustration was being taken out on her. When she started crying he told her to shut up, but Kit was too overwhelmed to stop. So he dragged her into the basement so she wouldn't wake anyone else up with her crying. What started out as a beating turned into abuse. He told her if she ever told anyone no one would believe her because she was just some little freak that no one cared about. The abuse continued after that night. She tried to hide each night from him. Locking herself in her closet or hiding in the darkest corner of the attic hoping he wouldn't look for her. But he started calling it hide and seek and you track her down and drag her out from where ever she had been hiding. Anytime anyone questioned what he was doing he'd tell them he was playing hide and seek with Kit, and no one would question him further or bothered to find out what was really going on. Eventually Kit just couldn't handle it anymore. She didn't care if there was no where else to go. She knew that at least the streets it couldn't be as bad as home. But as she ran away the people of Heatherfield caught her. Instead of taking her home they took her to a facility, some weird lab that she'd never seen before a place she didn't even know existed before that night. It was there that she began to discover where she came from or at least began to form ideas about her true origin. At the facility she was other girls, girls that looked like her all locked in rooms, strapped to examination tables, or more hauntingly floating in what looked like chambers of water. Her reality felt like a nightmare. She, like the other girls, got locked up in a room. At first it almost came as a relief, at least here she was alone. But when she heard the screams she knew this place would be hell. From that point on she only had one objective: escape. It wasn't easy. She tried a couple of times when she was first brought in and failed miserably. After that she stopped for a while to plan her next escape. She knew it was be easier if she seemed compliant, so that's what she did. She complied with everything they wanted, even when it was painful. Eventually with in a few months they put her in an outdoors training experiment. There wasn't that much security, and she knew she only had one chance so she took it. When they weren't looking she removed her tracker and bolted climbing under the poorly kept fences. As she ran she would glance back to see if she was followed. As she was looking behind her she hit something and fell down. Her heart almost stopped thinking it was a guard she ran into. She burst into tears, terrified. She begged not to be taken back claiming she'd rather die. But a rough voice claimed that he wasn't going to be taking her anywhere. When she finally looked up to see who she had run into it was a man wearing a uniform with an X on it and glowing eyes, which told her he was a mutant. Another person with a similar uniform and white hair floated down next to the man. Her eyes were white and glowing too. She asked Kit who she was. After a bit of hesitant explaining the two mutant strangers began to put the pieces together about who Kit really was and where she came from. They were on a reconnaissance mission to gather information about an underground laboratory that was experimenting and cloning mutants. After running into Kit they decided to regroup and plan a new mission. After much discussion and argument they finally settled on taking Kit back with them. From that night on Kit stayed with the X-men. She joined Xavier's school and began adjusting slowly to a new life.
(Kit's backstory is told from her point of view so there are holes in her story and things left out. If there's anything you want to know just ask me!)
Other: Unbeknownst to Kit she is the one of the first successful clones of a mutant that had the ability to detect mutant genes. She was placed with the Carington family to be raised relatively normally. The idea was to have the clones help keep Heatherfield "clean" of mutants. Of course the Kit's experiment didn't go to plan when the Caringtons started neglecting her and abusing her, this why she was taken back to the cloning facility. Due to her abuse Kit struggles to really connect with others and as soon as people start getting close she pushes them away out of fear of being hurt. She attends weekly therapy to deal with her trauma. Because of the abuse specifically from her foster brother she is trigged by certain things such as anytime someone says "Hide and Seek"
