Despite the obvious brooding demeanor he give off and his seclusion from other he actually has a heart for compassion. No one would expect it since he's so closed off, but he is aware of other's emotions. In general Rome is just so introverted that he pushes people away and is so reserved most never get to truly know him. Background: The Thornton family has long been known for their purity of blood status. It is rumored that their bloodline was one of the purest of the European territories. However, Reginald Thornton was the only son to the last surviving members of the dying family name. He of course married another pure blood to keep the family line pure. Unfortunately, the couple discovered they could not bear children. The news was devastating. Reginald especially felt discouraged as he would be unable to continue his families legacy, and wife, Amelia, still wanted a child desperately. Even if neither one could produce a child Amelia was adamant on finding another way. As fate would have it her sister became unexpectedly pregnant. Amelia of course was thrilled for her sister, yet at the same time heart broken being reminded of her lack of children. As time went on the whole situation was kept secret. The unexpected pregnancy was also not the most welcomed one considering the father was an unknown individual and the two were unwed when Rome was conceived. Amelia's family wanted to avoid the scandal of a bastard child. So as time went on everything was kept secret even after the child was born. Tragedy struck when Amelia's sister died from eclampsia leaving the child motherless and the family with great loss. If the story were to get out it would've meant social ruin for not only Amelia's family, but also the Thornton name since they were now related by marriage. So, Reginald proposed a plan to cover the whole scandal. He and Amelia would adopt the motherless child, and make it out as if he were their own. Amelia's sister's death would be told to be a tragic accident. It wasn't easy but the two families manage to hide the entire scandal completely and Amelia was able to raise the child she always wanted. So, Rome grew up believing he was a Thornton, that he was pure blooded and that he wasn't in reality an orphan. He was kept from the truth, after all how could a child be trusted with such sensitive information? As a result he always felt distant from his parents, never knowing why. Rome felt so different from them, looked different. In his eyes he didn't fit in with his own flesh and blood. He was also under a lot of pressure to live up to their expectations. After all, for all anyone knew he was a pure blood. No one knew the truth. His mother may have come from a pure blooded family but his biological father was actually a muggle. While he grew never knowing that, his adopted father treated him as such. Both of his parents treated him...differently because of his true parentage. It didn't help that his personality didn't take after his adoptive parents. Unlike them and unlike he was taught, he treated all life equally. He was kinder to people and those around him, even the house elves. Of course he was punished for such, being told it wasn't proper behavior for a boy of his station. Eventually he started only doing it in secret. He also became very drawn back, especially from his supposed family. Around that time he received his letter from Hogwarts. His parents were relieved, because he hadn't displayed any prominent magical abilities, which made them worry he took more after his biological father who they began to expect was not magical. To their relief Rome was every bit as magical as anyone else in the family, so maybe then he could live up to their expectations and keep the whole scandal a secret. So far the lie had become more and more of a reality as time went on. Hogwarts became Rome's unintentional haven. He was accepted into Slitherin and with his namesake many of the others blindly welcomed him in. Thinking he'd be like anyone pure blood. Though he wasn't like the rest of the elites. Unlike some of the stronger leaders he didn't enjoy looking down on others nor did he take part in their schemes to torture the muggle-born students. He easily became an outcast in the Slitherin house, at least to the popular ring of Slitherins. To the elites he was pathetic and to everyone else he had the namesake of an elite and judged by that. In other words the put bloods hated him for not being like them and everyone else judged him for being a pure blood. Rome ended up rather lonely being rejected by nearly everyone, but he was used to the rejection and didn't mind the solitude. Hogwarts was simply his haven because there he found his passion for Potions. Even as young as his first year he showed a talent for Potions class. He wasn't exactly good at some of the other classes but when it came to Potions he excelled even beyond the overachieving Ravenclaw students who fought him for the top grade in the class. That's where he found his happiness. Every year he fought to take some form of the class, and because he showed such a talent for it the teachers conceded to his wishes.
