PERSONALITY
Kane has no interest in how you feel. He doesn't give a fuck if you're offended, hurt or upset by his truth. A straight-up savage, Kane is brutally honest and it's not something he can help - he's been like this for a while now. Being the type of person who believes you should always choose the moral option regardless of the result instead of choosing immoral options for a moral end result, he will say what he thinks needs to be said in the situation with no regard for the consequences. Kane is the guy who minds his own business, not because he wants to be polite but because he doesn't care; but mess with his business and consider yourself incapable to mess with anyone else again.
Around the few close friends Kane has, he retains the same realistic and care-free attitude. He doesn't seem to be much different around different types of people, behaving the same towards friends, family and strangers. Kane doesn't typically hide himself or his personality around any specific groups of people; he doesn't trust anyone to let his guard down so Kane with his guard up is the only Kane visible so it is the only Kane people assume exists. He doesn't even trust himself to have hope, to be optimistic therefore even in his internal monologue, Kane remains the pessimist/realist. Kane doesn't feed others or himself sugar-coated bullshit - he faces the problem head on and doesn't hide behind hope. Should he come into a situation where it's pretty certain he's fucked, then Kane will accept his fate, knowing that whatever happens, happens.
Others may consider him to be someone who gives up, someone who doesn't fight and lets fate walk all over him. But it is on the contrary. Kane knows when he has no control over a situation and when he does, and through this he is able to only be preoccupied by things he can control. If there's nothing he can do, and he's made sure of it, then he will let whatever is destined to happen happen.
His greatest critique wasn't always a part of Kane's personality, at least not so prominently. When Kane was younger, he was less of a realist. He was filled with childish hope that was at the centre of innocence. But when the shocking truth of his parents' passing was revealed to him, said hope shattered. He felt betrayed and he felt as if this had been done to hurt him personally. So Kane began to grow up at a rate much faster than others his age. He became less hopeful and bitter with the cards life dealt him. Perhaps the next step in his developing personality, is finding someone worth feeling hopeful for again.
BACKSTORY
There are few people in this world who Kane believed were worthy of having hope for. His parents were the first; Kane had a happy childhood until their death. No siblings meant his parents could devote all the more love towards their son, so when Kane found out what had happened, it was difficult for an 8 year old to know how to cope. Countless counsellors and therapists could do nothing to the spark the same joy Kane had. He was handed over to an aunt and uncle who loved him but, of course, nothing could ever be the same as before and they could never come close to the standard he held his parents at. Nothing could ever rile Kane up more than being taunted about his parents: consider yourself a dead man. The worst part was the Kane was unaware of what happened to his parents until 6 months after the incident. The reason for the secrecy was never revealed to him, not when he was 8 and not in the present.
Unbeknownst to him, the car accident that caused his parent's death was not as innocent as it seemed. There were investigations and suspicious motives thrown about but Kane was not told of any of it from the beginning. It wasn't even until they had finished all investigation that his aunt and uncle told him of the news, pretending that it had only just happened. It wasn't until he reached 11 when he noticed a fault in the timeline of events. Confronting his aunt and uncle in uncontrollable anger, confusion and disbelief, they told him of the delay. They told him of the extensive investigations but not their conclusion or a reason for such suspicion. They were just as clueless as Kane. Expectedly, this set Kane off into his lack of trust and hope in other people. The less he revealed his true self to others, the less likely he was to be betrayed.
WHY ARE THEY AT DREAMWOOD?
His well-meaning aunt and uncle enrolled their nephew in the hopes that Kane could make some friends. At home, it was easy for him to stay in his room without much contact with others but at a boarding school, it became much more of a necessity. So, Kane eventually started to recover, having adopted a new outlook on life: never trust anyone because you get too close and more people have the opportunity to walk out of your life.
