[backstory]::

ilena grew up in a cult called "the red wood". it was what seemed like a utopia. everyone believed in a god and this woman, agnes scarlet, was the prophet who knew all and had a close relationship with god. so much so that she could hear him and spread his word.

men were the providers, women were the housemakers. ilena and her sister elle never went to school, but her brother thatcher did, and he learned how to fight and make money and cut down trees.

ilena wanted to learn that too, dissatisfied with her life of being a "wife" and someone who was always pressured to have children. every chance someone got once she got older and went through puberty (starting as young as twelve) people would ask or say..

" when are you getting married? "

" you should start having kids. "

" don't you want to have at least five kids? your parents were shameful, only having three. thank goodness they teach you so young. "

he hated the questions and the comments so much. her sister elle got married off at seventeen. she was supposed to, too. but no.

the prophet's father was over sixty years old. practically on his deathbed. but he saw potential in ilena. he wanted to marry her.

and so it was arranged, when ilena was only fourteen. she knew this wasn't right. nobody had ever gotten married that young. she panicked. she cried. she begged to postpone the wedding to no avail.

eventually, the night before the wedding, ilena ran away from the red wood, the only home she'd ever really known. his parents were planning to send him to the school, as ilena was not someone they thought "acted normal". they were going to send her there to get "better", to see how "good" his life had been.

so, ilena, knowing she wouldn't have get better if she had stayed there, decided to sign up for the school just to give his parents one final "fuck you".
