relationship through the series; having grown up around each other since kiara was 4 and farrah was 5, they had always considered each other to be best friends. when kiara's parents began to scold her for hanging around the poorer part of town, the two young girls would simply meet each other on the beach instead. throughout middle school and high school, they were inseparable- it was only in eighth grade that farrah properly introduced kiara to the rest of the friend group, because she quite frankly didn't want the boys acting like such boys around her. when kiara went through her kook year, it was hard on farrah, and as if kiara's kook year wasn't enough, farrah's dad got lost at sea in that same time frame. farrah had nowhere and no one to go to- jj was too preoccupied in attempting to be a good son, pope was too preoccupied in excelling in all of his classes, and john b was too preoccupied in his denial stage of grief. farrah's stage of grief halted somewhere between anger and bargaining, and the two of those stages melded together to form a dependency on alcohol. alcohol took farrah's mind out of the haze she lived in, and it wasn't until kiara even came back that anybody noticed something was wrong. just like her brother, farrah was awfully stubborn, and throughout season one, she refused to stop drinking, insisting that she didn't have a problem even though she knew she did, she just didn't want her problem to be fixed. season two brought on harder times for farrah, who now had to presume her brother dead as well, and kiara stayed by her side every second of every day that she could manage. by season three, kiara was driven to the brink of deciding that she had lost the farrah she'd grown up with, and once kiara walked away from farrah (after the island), she considered that to be her breaking point. she could handle losing other people, but kiara? no way, couldn't happen, nonnegotiable. they finally admit their feelings for one another in season three episode three.
