AGE 17:

Y/N placed her book bag down on her boyfriend's bed eagerly watching him practice his raps. She was new to the UK and he had taken a liking to the foreign girl. She nodded her head really listening to his rhyme.

"I think you need a better beat." Y/N cut him off reaching for the at-home mix board.

He smiled at her, "What do you know about that?"

Y/N shrugged her shoulders, "I know a bit. You're voice is hiding behind the mix. Push it out more. No one's gonna listen to what you're saying if we can't hear you."

Oakley pushed the mix board away tackling her on his small bed. She gasped, "Oakley chill. You want the song done or not?"

He smiled at her again, "Let's take a break."

She rolled her eyes, "Your work ethic sucks babe."

"That reminds me, what should I call myself? Oakley is not a good stage name. Ohh, how about Cench."

Y/N placed her hand on her head steadying herself, "Nah, that's way too street. You wanna be digestible for when you cross over. Niggas are not finna say Cench."

He sighed leaning back and thinking. Y/N sat up hitting his leg, "Central Cee!"

"Oh yeah, I like that."

"See, we can work and chill." She kissed his lips admiring him.

"You sure you don't wanna make a track or something?" He asked her, his voice scruffy from practicing.

Y/N shook her head, "Boy, you know I don't sing."

Of course, she was lying and he knew it. Her voice was beautiful. She never thought about using her gift like he did. And I'd be a secret until she felt like it.

AGE 21:

Oakley shouted popping the champagne bottle on the hotel balcony. Y/N clicked off his Instagram story wiping her tears. She moved to hit the block button.

"Congrats, I hope you enjoy the ride." She spoke into the phone locking the screen.

She wiped her face looking down at her songbook. Her producer hit the speaker, "Y/N you ready to go again?"

"Yeah let's run it back." She ignored the tight feeling in her chest. Her heartbreak was no match for her right now. He was out having fun celebrating his accomplishments while she sobbed in the studio.

It was time to prove that she could do what he did but better.

AGE 22:

"Yo, what's good yall? We got Y/N in the building this morning."

Y/N waved at the camera that was placed in the radio station. Her new manager sat next to her checking her phone to keep up with her new press schedule. Y/N pulled on her braids talking into the mic, "What's good? I'm super excited to be back in London for a bit."

"Your new single, Coulda Been, is charting at number 1 on Billboard right now! Will we be getting a remix?"

Y/N nodded, "I was in the booth with SZA the other day. I'm super hype to be collaborating with so many artists."

"Yo, you've really worked with almost everybody. From Nicki Minaj to Bryson Tiller. How's it feel?"

Y/N took a second, "It's great. I wasn't really expecting to blow up."

"Why?"

"A long time ago I had someone try to convince me to work on my talent and share it. It wasn't until I got my heart broken that I finally took it seriously."

The host smiled, "Is this Central Cee we're talking about?"

"Nah, nah." Y/N quickly lied not trying to start stuff.

"Mhm, well word on the street is he's dating Instagram model, Veronica Ashley. You and Cench did go to high school together, right? What's the tea sis? The audience wants to know."

Y/N looked to her manager, "We knew of each other but fuck him honestly. He can date whoever he wants."

"I also heard from sources that they were dating towards the end of you guys' relationship last year."

Y/N rolled her eyes, "He was hitting anything that walks. I'm good on that topic right now please."

"Fine. Y/N is still a bit shy y'all but that's okay. Will we see you at Rolling Loud next year?"

"I hope so!"

AGE 23:

Y/N's chest heaved up and down as she watched the crowd sing the rest of her song. She smiled looking up at the big jumbotrons. Her figure was clad in the best performance outfit. It was fire red, in connection to her latest album 'Flaming Pieces' which was currently charting.

"Y'all know it already?" She asked into the mic getting screams from the audience.

She made it to Rolling Loud after two long years. Her electric guitar sat on her hip waiting for her to play it. Y/N put the microphone on her stand holding the guitar in place. Her fingers smoothly played as she sang her lyrics.

She watched with tears in her eyes as she felt her past heartbreak come up. Y/N continued to sing her last song before bowing accepting her praise, "Thank you, Rolling Loud!"

The crowd continued to chant her name even after she was off the stage. Her PR team clapped for her as she entered her dressing room. She smiled opening a bottle of water. Her assistant came up next to her, "You have a visitor?"

Y/N wiped her sweat off with a clean towel as she looked into the vanity mirror, "Is it Doja? I've been meaning to send her my new verse."

The assistant shook her head opening the door. Oakley sauntered in with a dozen red roses. Y/N's breath hitched when she saw him. It had been a long time since she said a word to him, "Hi, Y/N."

She looked at her team as they watched, "Give us ten minutes and ten minutes only."

Now in private Y/N snatched the flowers from his hand, "Are these real?"

He laughed, "Yeah."

"Why are you here?"

"I'm about to go on next but I needed to speak to you."

Y/N waited for him to continue, "I watched you perform. Shit was awesome."

She placed the roses down on the couch, "Thanks."

He cleared his throat trying to search for any emotion in her body language, "I miss you. I wanted to say sorry for messing around on us."

She scoffed, "Like I said in my interviews, go fuck yourself."

His eyes dropped, "I'm glad you finally got the courage to chase your dreams. I listen to all your albums and singles. Man, you really outdid yourself."

Y/N smirked, "You always said your biggest regret would be me topping you on the charts. Now that I am, it must suck to be second best."

Cee stood by the door watching with sadness in his eyes. The girl that he knew was gone. The girl who helped him put his mixtapes together wasn't there.  Y/N had bossed up.

"I want you back." He told her confidently.

Y/N sighed. She hugged his skinny torso smelling his familiar cologne. Even after all these years he still wore the same one. She pulled back kissing his cheek softly, "You can let yourself out. Good luck with your set."

Y/N let him go returning to her vanity. She pulled her hoodie over her outfit getting ready to go. Oakley watched her in the mirror savoring her last moments. He opened the door letting himself out obviously regretting one thing, letting her go.
