23

Naira stepped out of her house and found a sleek black Lamborghini waiting for her at the door. A feeling of terror creeped into her body. She had already told her parents about Narasimha's birthday and was surprised to find that he had already informed them all about the same. Although he censored the part where he was threatening her to join him in his birthday party. Naira's parents had zero issues with Naira attending his birthday because for them he was their well wisher who cannot do anything wrong. Quietly Naira sat inside the car and the driver turned the key in the ignition. The engine roared to life and the car began speeding down the road.

When Naira entered his house, she wasn't greeted with usual quietness but a confused cacophony that happened to be arising from the hall. Nervously she stepped into the hall and discovered Narasimha Varma shouting at a short, stout woman who looked not a day older than 60. The woman was also equally fierce and was frequently arguing with him.
"Look woman you better leave before my Naira comes into the house. I don't want your hexed presence anywhere near my love." he cursed at her indignantly. The woman bristled. Here Naira noticed a striking similarity between the two. Narasimha looked quite a bit similar to the lady, especially his eyes looked a carbon copy of hers.
"And I shall also 'love' to see this Naira...."
"No you won't. You don't have any business being here in the first place. Get out right this instant." he barked vehemently. The lady was crossed.
"That's not how you talk to your mother Naru!!!!" she shouted at him, her cheeks red in anger. Narasimha's eyes shot wide open.
"Keep your voice low woman. If anybody hears that then you're dead i am telling you." he warned her. The woman scowled.
"Oh so like always you're ashamed to admit that I am your mother and that you are my....."
"Shut up!!!!! You are no one to me understand. Now get out, I don't have any money to give to you this time." he gesticulated towards the door. Naira was puzzled. Like why was he acting so rudely towards his own mother.
"How can you do this to me Naru??? I am your mother.......i want your help!!!" she pleaded but to be honest her tone was kinda fake. Narasimha frowned.
"Oh really!!!! Why don't you go to your snitch daughter!!!! I mean you always chose her over me right. Now go have fun living with your daughter....oops broke daughter." he said drily. The woman looked angry.
"She is your sister...."
"My family is dead. I have no parents....no siblings.....!!!!! I only have few friends and a girl who I love madly and with whom I will marry and start a family of my own. Got it!!!! Now leave." he told her rudely.

Suddenly his eyes fell on Naira who was standing quietly at the far end of the hall. His eyes widened in horror.
"Na......Naira!!! Baby.....come-come in!!!" he stuttered as he asked to come in. Naira acquiesced. The woman turned towards her and frowned. She sized her up shamelessly.
"So she's the one. Huh!!! What's so special about her.....she's just a child." she said in disdain. Narasimha fumed at this insult.
"Guards!!!! Drag her out of my house!!! And remember.....a street dog is allowed in my house but not her or her daughter." he hissed at her which scared the woman. The guards stormed into the house and started dragging her out with little courtesy. She shouted.
"You're a worst son a woman could ask for Narasimha. You deserved every single thing that happened to you......." she shouted as the guards threw her out and locked the door.

Naira turned towards Narasimha who was staring at the door in hatred.
"A perfect way to ruin someone's birthday. I hate this woman so much..." he whispered, a tinge of sadness in his voice. For once Naira felt bad for him, I mean if your mother comes to your house on your birthday and demands money instead of giving her blessings, it will ruin anybody's day.
"Did i interrupt...."
"Baby please you can never be a disruption. I should say sorry, this woman just wasted our time. Come!!! You must be hungry.....the lunch's ready." he told her with a smile. Naira noticed that he looked slightly disturbed. However, to not worry him more, she followed quietly.

The lunch was silent. He would only occasionally speak which was quite uncommon since he loved to talk to her at length. Naira understood that he was quite upset with whatever happened in the hall. She herself was quite disappointed in his mother, like why would you spoil your son's big day in this fashion.
"Naira have some more curry." he offered. Naira softly declined for she was already full.
"I am sorry to ask but is she really your mother??" she asked softly. He dropped his spoon in the soup bowl and sighed.
"Biologically yes but emotionally no." he answered briefly. She looked up at him innocently.
"Why would you say that??" she asked. He looked at her tiredly. Had it been someone else, he could've easily rebuked them for querying about his family, but he cannot treat her the same way he treats everybody else.
"Baby you have a beautiful family, not everyone however is as fortunate as you. My family is just a big one joke, nothing more. They're all toxic and insufferable. The best thing I have ever done in my life was distancing myself from every single one of them. But look at my bad luck, even after years of running away from them they somehow keep on finding me and keep coming up with different plans to infuriate me. I am sick and tired of them." he told her. Naira wanted to know more.
"But why would you dislike your mother so much." she asked. He chuckled half heartedly.
"Dislike!!! No baby doll I hate her . And why shouldn't I!!! All my life she treated me as if I am a complete fool who would grow up to become nothing. My elder sister was the apple of her eye. She always did everything she told her to do. I was the unnecessary one in my house. My father was my biggest supporter. But he died when I was 22. And from then my life became hell because my dominating sister would impose her opinions on me and my mother wouldn't interfere at all. I don't wanna talk about this anymore. I am so proud to have completely cut them off. And I don't wanna look back now. Gives me so much satisfaction to know that my sister who always thought I wouldn't be anything is basically broke now due to her own financial mistakes." he told her. Naira heard him interested.
"Don't you ever talk to them??" she asked curiously. He smiled.
"I don't want to give myself a brain rot my dear. You see, if there are people who mess with your mental peace......cut them off before they leave you with a lifelong trauma that wouldn't heal no matter how many therapist you change. I despise them all.....i don't want them anywhere near me. I am happy in my life. That's all what matters." he said. Naira nodded.
"Well, let's not talk about that. I am pretty sure you would stay for dinner.....i have a surprise planned for both of us. Believe me, this birthday of mine would be so special because of you." he said, propping his head against hers.
