Jenny's POV
At seven-fifty-three that morning after a long four and a half hours in labour, Caiden James Johnson-Horan came out kicking and screaming. He was the so called 'normal' one of the twins and even in his first few seconds of life, we knew he was going to be the boisterous, loud twin. There was certainly not a thing wrong with this baby's lungs, even if he had been born a few weeks early.
I glanced down at Caiden, his petite body could almost fit in one of the doctors hands. He was so small. But Caiden was taken as soon as Niall had cut the cord, before we even got to hold him but we expected this, considering they were premature babies.
On the other hand, our special little Noah Lee Johnson-Horan was born at seven fifty-eight, five minutes after his brother, and he entered this world in a more dignified manner than his brother. He didn't cry immediately, he just wriggled in the doctors hands. Niall cut his umbilical cord as well, smiling down at Noah who was significantly smaller than his already tiny brother. We only got a short glimpse of Noah before he was carted off with his brother for inspection as well. As he was whisked out of the room, we heard Noah's cry. It was a much more timid one compared to his brothers screech. Both mine and Niall's eyes were filled with tears as we watched them take our boys.
"Now, have you popped out enough babies for one day?" The doctor teased which made Niall and I laugh.
"When do we get to see them?" Niall asked. We had got to hold Bella immediately but on the other hand, Bella wasn't premature.
"They're doing a quick check to make sure the babies are okay, it depends on how they're developed so far. But I'm sure you'll see them soon, they seemed like healthy little boys to me," he smiled as Niall squeezed my hand.
Half an hour later, I was back in my ward in recovery when a nurse came, pushing a small trolley. She pushed it over to the side of the bed and when we glanced in we were met with two very small babies swaddled in a blue blanket together, little blue caps on their heads. "They're two healthy little boys who are ready for some cuddles with their mummy," the nurse smiled.
"That's so cute, how they're together like that," Niall grinned, taking a picture of them.
"They cried when they were separate, which is natural for twins so when we put them together again they both calmed down," she smiled as she unwrapped their blanket. Both were clad in just a nappy and it was then we both got to really observe the size differences between both. Caiden had longer legs than his brother and in general was bigger, but Noah wasn't far behind.
When they both opened their eyes, we could see the immediate difference between the two. Noah had much more almond shaped eyes whereas Caiden's were round. Noah's nose was also significantly smaller than Caiden's. Both boys had bright rosy cheeks but Noah's were much puffier. He had a rounded face, unlike his brother but it didn't make him any less cute.
As we saw our boys together for the first time, we cried. Not because our children were different but because they were both just so beautiful, in their own way. We cried, not because of Noah but for Noah. This beautiful little boy who is just as perfect as his brother, will not be seen like his brother. As I sat in my hospital bed, smiling down at these beautiful little boys in the cot below me, I could already hear it. The 'has he got downs?' 'Is something wrong with him?'. No, nothing is wrong with our little boy. His disability is a part of him, it doesn't define who he is.
"They're perfect," Niall smiled, a tear rolling down his cheek. He sat on the edge of my bed with me and wrapped an arm around me. I nodded in agreement, watching as Caiden wriggled around, kicking his legs but Noah lay still, opening his eyes every few minutes before shutting them again. We laughed together when we saw him giving Caiden a side glare with his eyes, as though telling him 'sit still for Gods sake!'
The nurse lifted them up one-by-one, placing them on my chest, skin on skin. "They're so precious," I smiled as Niall gently ran his fingers through the scarce blonde hair on Caiden's head before running his fingers through the much fuller head of blonde hair Noah sported.
"Our little lads," Niall chuckled quietly, reaching down and gently taking Noah's hand in his. He wiped under his eyes, smiling to me. "I can't believe they're finally here," his eyes watered again. I couldn't help but smile brightly because I knew how much he had yearned for a baby, particularly a baby boy and now he had two.
"I remember when Mason was smaller than they are now, although Noah isn't much bigger," Niall chuckled as Noah gripped Niall's pinky finger in his hand. Niall's eyes watered again and a tear fell down his cheek. I knew it wasn't one of sadness, it was one of happiness because his son was clutching his finger. This time he was certain they were his.
A while later the nurse came in and told me they should feed now. I nodded and blushed a little at the prospect of actually nursing them, feeling a little anxious. Arabella was fed with breastmilk but she never got it directly from me, we used a pump. By three months though she was almost fully on formula. I thought it would be nice to actually grow that bond with them by breastfeeding but I felt as though I'd be weening them onto formula's soon.
I moved both boys so each was at a nipple. Caiden was the first to put it in his mouth and suck on it. I smiled as I watched him before turning my attention to Noah. I giggled and so did Niall when Noah just licked my nipple, not catching on like his brother did. We then both watched him a little sadly because this was the first time we were actually watching Noah struggle compared to his brother. He was trying to figure it out, but he couldn't. Ten minutes later, Noah still just had his mouth around my nipple. I watched, wishing I could do something to help.
"He'll get it, just give him time," the nurse smiled when she saw us watching worriedly. We both nodded, biting our lips. I felt my eyes fill with tears at the thought of us having to watch this little boy struggle compared to his brother. If he's this slow at figuring out how to suck, I was scared of how he would struggle with big things, like sitting up or walking.
Much to our relief, a few minutes later, Noah began to suck, finally figuring it out. We both smiled brightly at one another. "Well done, Noah!" Niall clapped his hands, smiling brightly. Even then, I began noticing the small differences in the boys. Caiden was sucking a lot harder and firmer, more aggressively, whereas Noah was sucking gently. I could tell already these boys were going to be polar opposites and I couldn't wait to watch them grow.
When they'd finished feeding and needed burping, I decided to hand one to Niall. "Here, choose a baby," I chuckled.
"Wait, which one is which," he started to laugh because on their backs, there was no difference between them, other than the amount of hair they had.
"Uh," I actually had to think about it. "Caiden is on my left boob," I told Niall who looked confused for a moment. He did a movement as though he was holding a pen before nodding and picking up Caiden. I started to laugh because even at his age, he has to think about which side is left and which is right.
After feeding, we dressed the boys in their 'made in Ireland' vests. As I glanced down at the two little boys on the pillow in my lap, I felt myself beginning to cry again. I just couldn't come to terms with the fact the doctors were telling us one of our boys was perfect but the other wasn't. After meeting them, to me, they were both as perfect as one another.
...
That evening, Joanna arrived with Arabella who had stayed with her as well as Darren. Arabella stood shyly at the door which wasn't like her. She gripped Darren's hand she was holding, glancing over at Niall and I who each had a baby in our arms.
"Bella! Come over and meet you brothers," I smiled, holding a hand out to her. She smiled brightly before running over and jumping on the bed next to me. She sat up on her knees, glancing down at Caiden who was in my arms.
"This is your other brother," Niall stood up, sitting on the edge of the bed with Noah in his arms. She began glancing between the two, putting her fingers in her mouth. She smiled behind them before looking up at me and whispering 'wow!'
"Amazing, aren't they?" I smiled.
"What are their names?" She asked, looking rather mesmerised as she watched Caiden wriggle and gurgle in my arms.
"What would you like to call them?" I asked curiously.
"Mason number two," she pointed to Caiden. "And queen," she pointed to Noah. "Oh wait, that's me," she giggled and did the cupcake face. I rolled my eyes fondly and shook my head. This girls spends a little too much time with Andrew and possibly Harry as it seems.
"Okay, well this is Caiden," I smiled at her. "And daddy is holding Noah," I told her. She climbed onto my legs so she was closer to Niall, glancing down at Noah in his arms. "Do you like them?"
"Love them!" She giggled, poking Noah's cheek. He only opened his eyes and didn't react in any other manner. Arabella then crawled up between my legs, poking Caiden's cheek as well. Caiden did not have the same reaction as Noah. She jumped and started to cry when Caiden screamed and began crying loudly in my arms.
"Oh Bella," I cooed because he had obviously frightened her. She cried loudly as Niall laughed at her while the two siblings sobbed.
"Oh Bella, you donkey, you don't poke the babies," Niall chuckled as Darren picked her up and gave her a cuddle to comfort her. She sniffled in his arms as Niall passed Noah to me and then went over, taking Arabella from Darren's arms.
"Aren't you silly," Niall said to her as she rest her head on his shoulder.
"No, Caiden is," she huffed. "He's a drama queen," she said letting out an exaggerated sigh which was a bit hypocritical. It made everyone chuckle. "Noah is my favourite," she lifted her head from Niall's shoulder, wriggling to be put down. She returned to the bed with me and the boys, smiling down at him.
"Well, I guess he's already like his big sister because she's the biggest drama queen we know," Niall raised an eyebrow at Arabella who just giggled. She wasn't even denying it, she knew she was one but that's why we love her.
"Do they look different to you, Bella?" I asked her cautiously, wondering if she could see that something was wrong with Noah. She observed the two boys before glancing up at me and nodding. "Yeah, how?"
"He has big eyes," she pointed to Caiden. "And he has lotsa hair!" She pointed to Noah. I smiled softly when I realised she actually didn't see anything 'wrong' with either of them. It just shows that you're not born judgmental, as you grow up, society that teaches you someone is not 'normal'. "So they're not the same?" I asked and she shook her head. "But are they both still cute to you?"
"Yeah! Cause everybody is pretty in their own way," she smiled. I felt myself grin widely. Moments like these I realised we're raising this girl right. She may be only four, but she is the most intelligent four year old I have ever met.
"You're so right," I smiled, leaning forward and kissing the top of her head. "Remember we told you one of the babies is different?" I asked.
"Yeah, God maded him extra special!" She smiled, pushing her fringe out of her eyes.
"Do you know which baby it is?" I asked. She looked at them in thought before shaking her head. I smiled softly because it was so nice to see that she hadn't been infected by those prejudiced people who point out anybody who looks anything but 'normal'. "It's Noah, he's the little brother you gotta take extra special care of. We're gonna have to help Noah lots and give him extra help, you think you'll be able to be an amazing big sister and do that?" I smiled. She nodded with a bright smile, bouncing excitedly on the bed. "Okay, so who are you gonna give a cuddle first?" I questioned and she giggled.
"Both!" She exclaimed excitedly. I chuckled as Niall lifted her from the bed, placing her in the seat he had been in. I handed Niall Caiden who he placed on Arabella's lap. She held him carefully, watching down at him with a smile.
"Smile for the camera!" Niall held up his phone and took a picture of her with her brother. She giggled and then looked to me.
"Wanna hold Noah too," she said, glancing over at me. Niall took Noah from me and somehow managed to get the two babies on her petite lap, although they were smaller than any dolls Bella owned anyway. She looked a little uncertain when we handed her Noah, looking as though she was trying to be extra careful. Niall took another photo of her, this time with both her brothers.
"Ah, take Caiden!" She yelled when he started crying. I laughed, finding her reaction hilarious. Niall quickly took him and placed him back on my chest which calmed him. "Noah is still my favourite brother 'cause he don't cry," she smiled down at him.
"You can't have favourites, that's mean on Caiden," Niall teased. "How would you feel if I had a favourite kid?"
"Well, it would be me," she smiled sassily at Niall who rolled his eyes.
"No, Noah is my favourite kid," Niall jokingly said.
"Mammy is my favourite parent," she shot right back which had the room laughing. Joanna laughed, shaking her head at Arabella before taking Noah from her, nursing him for the first time.
"That's you told, Niall," Darren chuckled and I nodded.
"Where did you get your sass from?" Niall chuckled.
"Not you," Arabella said which had me looking at her with raised eyebrows. Where is this girl getting her attitude from? She is a little diva, isn't she?
"You know, if you're being cheeky to your dad, I'm just going to have to tell Santa," Niall said taking his phone out. "Might just give him a ring," he raised an eyebrow at her. She looked unaffected by this. Niall pressed his phone to his ear, even though he hadn't actually phoned a number. "Hello, Santa? I would just like to tell you that Arabella Grace Johnson-Horan needs to be moved to the naughty list," he watched her as he spoke. He waited a few seconds before speaking again. "Yes, she was very cheeky to-" Niall was cut off by Arabella who ran to his feet crying.
"I'm sorry daddy, I love you," she wrapped her arms around his legs.
"Yes santa, she was very cheeky to me," Niall continued to speak, watching Arabella at his feet.
"Daddy! Stop!" She cried. "I'll be good,"
"Yeah, she was very rude, Santa, you definitely need to move her to the naughty list," he nodded.
"Niall, stop tormenting your child," I said, feeling as though I said this phrase all to often. He just loves messing with her.
"Oh Santa, she made me very sad," Niall continued anyway, trying not to laugh into his phone. "I think she should only get coal this Christmas if I being honest," he sighed then, glancing down at her.
"Daddy please, you're my favourite parent," she looked up at him, her eyes gleaming with tears under the light.
"Oh, maybe we should give her one more chance after all," Niall fake hung up the phone before picking Bella up. "Glad to hear I'm your favourite parent again," he smiled as she sniffled into his chest.
"I'm your favourite too then," she mumbled.
"Okay, but don't tell your brother," he whispered and she smiled up at him. "But I love you all the same," he smiled.
"No remember, you gotta love mammy mostest," she smiled.
"Cause she gave me you," Niall knew what she was going to say.
"And now she gived you Caiden and Noah!" She smiled. "You gotta love mammy mostest cause mammy gived you things you loves lots," she giggled and we both had to smile at this little girls intelligence.
"And who gives you the things you love the most?" He asked her curiously, adjusting her on his hip.
"Mammy and daddy and my bwoders!" She giggled.
"Yeah, what do we give you that makes you love us so much?"
"You makes me happy," she smiled. "And our teachers says the people you loves most makes you happy," she said. I shook my head in disbelief. This girl has been at school for less than a month and she's already talking as though she has the head of a ten year old on her head. Heck, some ten year olds aren't even that intelligent.
"Yeah, you're right. Mammy does make me very happy," Niall smiled over at me. "And so do you," he kissed her on the nose. "And your little brothers already make me so happy!" He sat down on the edge of the bed with her on his lap.
I smiled over at them before glancing down at the two boys on my lap. Niall wrapped an arm around me, lying down with Bella. As I lay in that bed, I realised what Bella had said was one hundred per cent true. I had never felt so much euphoria all at once, just because I was lying with the four people I love the most in this world. She's right, the people you love make you happy. And I was sure as hell in my element to be lying with my family.
