23. Breathe
"Out of here, quickly," said Snape.
He grabbed Draco by the neck and forced him through the door, though he was struggling, he knew I was still in the shadows. The other death eaters vanished, and Harry and I stared at each other.
"No." Harry said simply, and fiercly threw the cloak off us, just as the last death eater darted out of the door.
"Petrificus Totalus!" I shouted, and the death eater froze and fell to the ground with a sickening crunch. He'd barely face-planted the floor when Harry was grabbing my sleeve and dragging me over the unconcious body.
"Dumbledore... Snape... Dumbledore... Snape." Harry muttered, frenzied. "If we find them both, we reverse it! He can't be, he can't be...."
"Harry..." I said softly, everything seeming very far away, and I felt bile rise up my throat. "He's gone...."
"No, he's not!" Harry exclaimed angrily. "It's a tall tower, we can save him!"
The image of green light passed through my eyes and Dumbledore's empty eyes, but I cringed, knowing Harry wouldn't believe me until he had proof.
But everything felt oddly numb and quiet, how could Dumbledore, the most powerful wizard in the world be dead? How could he when he'd defeated hundreds without a wand, but let that slimy bastard hit him without a fight?
Harry pulled me down the remaining stairs and I shoved him off me, grabbing my wand. The lights were flickering, corridor filled with dust from the ceiling, drops of blood at the end of the corridor. But a battle was raging, and we needed to get out of there.
"It's over! Let's go!" I heard Snape scream at Draco, and I caught a glimpse of them disapearing around the corner.
"Rory!" He screamed, catching my eye, looking lost and afraid. "Remember the letter! I'll come back!"
As Harry and I plunged into the fray to follow them, my heart beat echoing in my head, Greyback flew himself at me before I could raise my wand. I screamed as I could feel my scars strain against his weight, blood and sweat drooling on top of me, trying to posistion his face at my neck as I hit him repeatedly on the back.
"Petrificus Totalus!" I heard Harry shout, and the disgusting werewolf fell against me. Harry grabbed my arm and yanked me free.
We started off again, though I was already starting to bleed, though were stopped when we spotted Ginny in combat with a death eater, her fiery hair flying.
She throwing hex after hex at her, giggling while Ginny dodged them: "Crucio - Crucio - you can't dance forever, pretty-"
"Impedimenta!" yelled Harry.
It hit her in the chest, she squeaked as she was lifted off her feet and crashed into a wall, sliding out of sight.
"Harry, where did you come from?" Ginny cried, but there was no time to answer her.
We started off again, shooting hexes and ducking to avoid decapitation. All of a sudden Harry yelled out, and I glanced to see he'd been disarmed. But this was my mistake as a heavy body tackled me.
Of course, it was the burned and twisted Cameron Wilde.
"Missed me?" He snarled with a twisted grin.
"No, you bastard!" I spat, trying to push him off as he leered onto me, his hands trying to roam through the several layers of clothing I had on. "You--You killed Jia, remember?"
"Yes, it was a lovely, beautiful time." He sighed happily, hands pressing down roughly on my forearms as he tried to kiss the side of my neck. "Of course, I've spilt other blood since."
"Good for you," I said angrily, and shifting about I pointed my wand at his knee. "Sectumsempra!"
Cameron yelled in pain as blood spurted out of his knee, and I roughly shoved him off me, stomping on his wand to stop any further movement.
"You bitch!" He screamed, trying to stand but failing.
"Makes an easier job for Sam to kill you, now." I said breezily.
Cameron began laughing as he pawed at his wound. "Nice spell, wonderful spell, Ha! Ha!"
Feeling a chill go up my spine I began to run away from him, try to catch up with Harry who was already around the corner in pursuit of Malfoy and Snape.
Suddenly, I lurched forward onto a sticky substance, having the grab the wall for guidance. I looked down, to see blood coating the floor in a crimson smile. Feeling sick, I could hear ragged sobs coming from the side corridor where blood was coating the floor.
With everything slightly disorientated I stumbled around the corner to come across an unearthly sight. Gennie and Cole knelt on the floor, holding Sam, who's upper body was soaked in blood.
"NO!" I cried, my voice a distant scream as I sunk to my knees next to them, every small sound seeming like an earthquake. Cole was sobbing as he held a pale Sam, as Gennie sat at the side, hands soaked in blood looking unsure what to do.
"Cameron hit her." Gennie said in a low tortured voice over Cole's ragged sobs. "We--We found her like this, she dragged herself down here."
"Hey, hey, Sam." I said, roughly shaking her arm. "You can't die yet. No, no, not yet."
She glanced at me, a weary smile on her face. "It is what it is."
"No, no, don't you fucking give up, you coward!" Cole screamed, his face a tortured mask of horror. "You were the one who taught me to fight, never give up, never let the bad guys win, Sam--Please!"
"I-I'm dying anyway you softie." Sam said, grasping Cole's blood stained top. "What's the point in fixing me only to lose me again?"
"Don't you do this, Sam. Don't you dare." Gennie said fiercly, and I noticed she was crying too.
"Sam, please, we can fix this, we can find an antidote. Anything, c'mon, just let us help you." I choked out.
Sam gave Cole an angelic smile. "I poisoned him too, you know. Your brother. I had to--I had to put the poison in my drinks so he wouldn't suspect it."
"This--This was your plan?" I cried. "To let yourself die just so he would?"
"Don't worry, it'll be slow and painful. Hopefully more so than this. My final gift from me to you, Cole." Sam whispered, kissing Cole's cheek.
"Just get me a gift card, I don't want any gift apart from you alive!" Cole burst out, his face screwing up in tears.
Sam looked off into the distance and smiled. "I see her. Jia, she's holding her arms out to me--" Sam pawed at the air with a dreamy smile. "I'm going home."
"No, you're not." Cole spat out. "Your home is with us, with me. Please, Samantha, no."
"You were Cole, oh my god, you were. You were the best friend a person could ask for. I just--I love you a damn lot Cole, and I wish I could have loved you in the way you once wanted. But that led you to Gennie."
"I'll take care of him." Gennie murmered, running her hand over Sam's blood coated arm. "Sam--I just, you grew on me. You became one of the best friends I'm ever going to have."
"You too, kid, you too." Sam choked out, coughing blood into her hand. "Ugh, I didn't know it would be this gruesome."
"Then let us help you!" I cried.
"You are, by being with me. The three people I love the most..." Sam said, her voice faint. Her watery blue eyes fell on me. "We'll see each other soon, Rory, I can promise you that much..."
Then she gasped, her eyes went blank and her limp hand fell onto the stone cold floor.
A horrifically animalistic scream of pain came from Cole as he held his dead best friend even closer, mumbling her name over and over again, as if it would bring her back to life.
A numb, dulling ache came over me as I stared at my still best friend. Sam had deserved so much in life, but it had been nothing but painful. She was forced into an abusive relationship to stay in the closest, alienated her friends, became a death eater on two occasions, witnessed her girlfriend die before taking poison in an attempt to murder Cole's abuser.
She deserved so damn much and now she was dead.
A ragged sob went through me as I stumbled back onto the wall, the stench of blood overpowering. It was everywhere. Leaking out of Sam torso, coating Cole's hands, streaked down Gennie's face.
I couldn't breathe.
I couldn't bare to look into those dead blue eyes knowing I'd never hear another sarcastic laugh from her, another brag about the girls she'd been with, another hug or roll of the eyes that showed she cared.
Disorientated I staggered away from the scene, blinking several times to stop myself from falling apart. I still had a job to do, I had to, I had to...
Bursting out from the main entrance doors, the whole world was a blur of grief-striken howls and dancing stars in a neverending night. There were hundreds of people crowded around the tower, all around another fallen figure.
No.
I pushed through the crowds of students and teachers to find Harry knelt beside Dumbledore, sobbing.
It was a shock to see Dumbledore as he was, broken and silent, his arms in odd angles and glasses falling down his ancient face. He could have been sleeping.
Gripping tightly onto Harry's hand, I pushed Dumbledore's glasses up his nose, folding his arms across his chest.
"He's at rest now." was all I said.
"This--This was the horcrux." Harry mumbled, showing me a green locket with a golden S stamped across it.
There was nothing inside but a scrap of parchment. With the lights of wands from behind I caught the words of the letter.
To the Dark Lord
I now I will be dead long before you read this but I want you to know that it was I who dicovered your secret. I have stolen the real Horcrux and intend to destroy it as soon as I can.
I face death in the hope that when you meet your match you will be mortal once more.
R.A.B.
I didn't know what it meant. All I knew was that everything was in vain. Dumbledore's death, Draco being forced away, Sam... Dying too soon was all because of a horcrux that wasn't real.
I felt the lump of Draco's letter in my pocket, and was reminded that not only was it highly unlikely I'd see him again, but that I hadn't seen Arthur at all in the castle.
So I did what was expected of me.
I broke down.

A/N Well I'm sad. Not only has Zayn Malik left One Direction leaving me in tears for hours but I wrote this, and damn it was awfully sad to write.
Sam was honestly one of my favourite characters to write but this is cruical for the plot. Sorry for anybody's heart I broke, because I broke my own heart writing this. The irony is that I wrote this on the same computer I wrote Jia's death scene.
This is also like the shortest chapter ever oh well.
2 chapters left and an epilouge, will be put up after I return from my skiing holidays.
See you all soon x
