Chapter 57

READER'S POV

We sat there with shocked expressions on our faces after Lucifer told us the real reason why he locked Belphie way before the exchange program started. It turns out he was trying to get rid of us humans and commit treason after all.

"Wow...I know the guy hates humans but whoa..." Raven commented.

"...Okay, I understand what happened now, but still..." Asmo trailed off before continuing.

"Couldn't you have at least told us in secret what was up?" Asmo asked with a frown.

"Yeah. You didn't have to lie to us, feeding us that story about sending Belphie off to the human world to study. Isn't that right, (Y/n)? You agree, don't you?" Levi asked me.

"I hate to say this Lucifer, but, I agree with the others on this one," I told him.

"Mmhm, exactly! See, you really get it, (Y/n)!" Mammon smiled.

"But, why is it that Belphie hates humans?" I asked him.

Lucifer didn't say anything and then he looked away from me.

"That's not something we usually-"

"All right, listen up. There ain't any rule sayin' we can't talk about what happened with Lilith, is there? C'mon, we should answer (Y/n)'s question," Mammon spoke up.

"...You're right. (Y/n), I take it you've heard  us mention Lilith before?"

"Yeah Beel told me a few things," I answered him.

"She was our little sister, the youngest one of us. Long ago, back when we were still angels, Belphie felt very differently about humans than he does now. He liked them."

"Uh, I'd say he more than just liked 'em," Mammon commented.

"Yeah. He loved them. He loved humans and the human world in general," Beel told me with a smile.

"Yep, he really did. His room was filled to the brim with stuff from the human world. And whenever he had a chance, he'd sneak down there for a visit," Asmo chuckled.

"He used to bring me back stuff all the time. He knew my favourite anime and manga and game characters, and he'd get me rare character-themed merchandise," Levi told me.

'So that's how he got into anime,' I thought to myself as they told me what Belphie used to be like before the Celestial war.

"He'd reguarly go down to the human world without permission, and he was always getting in trouble with Lucifer and Micheal for it. He'd say he wanted to see how the humans were doing and what they were up to," Beel told me.

"No matter how many times he got yelled at, it never stopped him," Mammon told me before Lucifer continued with the story.

"Lilith was especially close to Belphie. His enthusiasm for the human world rubbed off on her, and she began to take an interest in humans as well."

"Yeah. Lilith has always been attached to Belphie," Beel smiled as he remembered his sister.

"No need to be so modest. I'd say she was pretty attached to you too, Beel. You, Belphie and Lilith always used to hang around together, laughing and giggling. I was so jealous!" Asmo pouted.

"Yeah. Whenever they were together, you were like three puppies, playing and having a good time," Levi told him.

"*chuckle* like the three musketeers?" I asked and he nodded his head.

"Hey, whoa! Lilith was also pretty attached to ME! Like, we even slept in the same bed once, y'know! She was a big fan of Mammon!"

"Oh yeah, I remember now! You woke up and started making a scene, yelling about how you'd just had a bad dream," Asmo chuckled.

"WHOA...HEY! Quit it! Not another word!" Mammon shouted with a red face while Raven laughed at him.

"We were all ignoring you, but if I remember correctly, Lilith felt sorry for you and agreed to sleep beside you because you were so scared."

"D'AAAAAH! SHUT UUUUP!" Mammon shouted as his face got even redder.

"I wouldn't say she was attached to you, exactly. It was closer to pity," Satan told him.

"Yes, now that we've got that established, back to the story," Lucifer told us before he continued.

"Belphie rubbed off on Lilith, and she started going down to the human world a lot as well. And like Belphie, she developed an interest in humans. But then one day..."

"One day, what?" I asked.

"She happened to meet a man. He was human, and she fell in love with him."

My eyes widen when he told me this before Mammon asked.

"Hey, while we're on the subject, did that guy know Lilith was actually an angel?" Mammon asked.

"Don't be crazy. She kept it a secret from him, of course," Beel told him.

"An angel hiding her true form so she could have a relationship with a human...Wow, now that's love," Asmo smiled.

"Lilith may have hoped to keep the relationship a secret from us but...eventually word got out," Beel told me.

"You didn't like it one bit huh, Lucifer? You were all like, 'As your older brother, I won't stand for this!'" Mammon spoke in a deep voice to mimic Lucifer which made me laugh because I can just picture it now.

"...I did go down to the human world once to have a look at the man she was seeing," Lucifer told us with a hint of blush on his cheeks.

"Oh wow...that's like, a little creepy," Asmo commented.

"Sounds like someone was being a little too overprotective of his sister," Levi spoke with a small frown.

"Poor Lilith," Satan mumbled.

"Qu-Quiet, all of you!" Lucifer shouted and then he continued.

"He seemed like a man of virtue to me, a good man. And most importantly, Lilith was happy...however, that happiness proved to be short-lived."

"What happened?" Raven asked.

"The man she loved was stricken with an incurable illness. Lilith tried to nurse him back to health - she did everything she could - but showed no signs of recovering..." Lucifer spoke sadly and Beel showed the same expression.

"She was afraid of losing him, and in her fear, she made a mistake. She gave him forbidden food from the Celestial Realm, hoping it would save his life."

"If only she'd talk to us, told us what was going..." Beel spoke sadly.

"Even if she did, there's nothing we could've done. I mean, altering the life span of a human is expressly forbidden," Asmo spoke up.

"Even though it was someone she loved with all her heart?" I asked and Asmo nodded his head.

"Lilith incurred the wrath of our father, who declared that she was to be punished."

"What kind of punishment?" I asked.

"She was to be wiped from existence, so that nothing at all was left. Disposed of, as if she were nothing more than garbage," Lucifer told me and that made me gasp in shock.

"We couldn't just stand by and let something like that happen. As her brothers, we had to do something," Asmo told me.

"You bet we did."

"That wasn't the only reason behind our rebellion against out father. But it WAS the catalyst that incited it," Lucifer told me.

"Is that how the Celestial war started? you were trying to stop your old man from killing your sister?" Raven asked and Lucifer nodded his head.

"What happened to Lilith?" I asked.

"She, um..." Beel trailed off. "She lost her life in the Great Celestial War."

My eyes widen when Beel told me this before Lucifer continued.

"Belphie felt that the man she'd fallen in love with was responsible for it all - that it call back to him. He said that if she hadn't met him, she never would've died...And that's when things changed. That's when Belphie began hating humans. So when Diavolo proposed establishing peaceful relations with the human world, Belphie couldn't accept it."

"And then he turned on you, Lucifer, which would explain how he ended up locked away in the attic."

"No. Lucifer locked Belphie up for his own good. Lord Diavolo isn't the sort of demon who'd let someone off the hook if they tried to stand in the way of his dreams. If Lucifer hadn't stopped Belphie, he would've been found guilty of reason for sure."

"That would've meant history could repeat itself, wouldn't it?" I asked and Raven nodded his head.

"Lucifer was just trying to protect his brother," Raven commented.

"You should've talked some sense into Belphie, Lucifer. Then maybe...things could've been different," I told him.

"I wanted to...but to him, it probably seemed as though I was nothing more than Diavolo's puppet," Lucifer told me.

"Well to be fair- hmpf!" I covered Raven's mouth before he could finish that sentence.

"Let me ask you this; are you just Diavolo's puppet?" I asked him.

"Yeah, that's what I'd like to know. Why did you pledge yourself to Diavolo?" Satan asked him.

"...I'm sorry...sorry I never said anything. Lilith, she...she didn't die in that battle."

Beel's eyes widen in shock when Lucifer told us this.

"What...?" Satan asked with a shocked look.

"Excuse me?"

"Hold on, no..."Levi trailed off.

"What the hell!? This really ain't the time to be makin' jokes like that, Lucifer!" Mammon shouted.

"It's no joke. It's the truth, Lilith didn't actually die in the Great Celestial War," Lucifer told us.

"What do you mean by that?" Beel asked with a frown and Lucifer didn't say anything and then I remembered something.

'Wait...when I touched that grimoire, it showed me something...Lucifer made his allegiance to Diavolo to save Lilith,' I thought to myself before Lucifer told the others.

"Diavolo saved Lilith  when she was on the verge of death. And as compensation, I swore my allegiance to him for all eternity," Lucifer confessed.

"So you did that to save Lilith's life...?" Beel asked.

"...This is the first I've ever heard of this," Satan commented.

"Yes, I should think so, because this is the first time I've ever spoken of it. Diavolo had Lilith reborn as a human," Lucifer told.

"Then about her memory? would she remember being an angel?" Levi asked.

"Nah, no way...she would've lost all memory of her former life for sure," Mammon spoke up.

"Wait, you guys are getting ahead of yourselves here. Have you forgotten how long ago the Great Celestial War was? Even if she was reborn as a human, by now she'd have to be...you know..." Satan trailed off.

"Satan's right. Humans don't live very long, unlike us demons," Raven commented and I patted his head.

"Lucifer, why didn't you say anything to us? How could you keep something so important from us...?!" Asmo shouted in anger.

"Because we were prohibited from coming in contact with the human Lilith. Lilith was alive, yes. And nothing was stopping you from going down there to see her if you had a mind to do that. Yet it was strictly forbidden, under any and all circumstances. I thought it was best that I be the only who had to love with the pain of knowing that," Lucifer explained to him.

'Poor guy...he knew Lilith was alive and yet wasn't allowed to see her...I can't imagine if that happened to Jamie if I had done what Lucifer did,' I thought to myself as I held Raven closet to my chest.

"So why couldn't we go see Lilith, huh?!" Mammon shouted.

"It only makes sense. After all, she'd been sentenced to death for her crime. Imagine what would've happened if word had gotten out that someone had saved her, and she'd been reborn as a human!" Asmo told them.

"Yeah, even though it was the son of the Demon King himself who did it, there would have been a SERIOUS reckoning," Levi spoke up.

"An angel-demon war, that would've been catastrophic," Raven commented.

"Still...! I at least would like to have known, Even if I couldn't see her again, I would like to have that Lilith was alive...!" Beel spoke with tears in the corner of his eyes.

"...I made the choice I made because I thought it was best at the time. What if it had been you, (Y/n)? ...What would you have done?" Lucifer asked me.

"...Even if it was protecting my sibling who had been reborn, I still would have told someone and made sure it was kept quiet," I told him.

"I see...As Satan said, even if Lilith was reborn as a human, when you consider their life span, she has to be dead by now. But even so, if she edned up the man she loved in the end...then I know she was happy. I truly believe that," Lucifer smiled.

"Gr...! Lucifer!" Beel shouted before he hugged Lucifer tightly which took him by surprise.

"Wh...whoa...I totally thought you were about to punch Lucifer, Beel," Levi told him.

"I'm...not sure I've ever seen you give Lucifer a hug that big before, Beel," Asmo said to him.

"You chose to save Lilith, Lucifer. You did what you had to in order to keep her alive, didn't you? ...Thank you. And...I'm sorry...I'm sorry you had to bear that pain all on your own," Beel told him.

"You don't have anything to apologise for, Beel," Lucifer smiled.

"Also, I finally understand. I get why you're so loyal to Lord Diavolo," Beel said to him.

"Yet that same loyalty ended up hurting Belphie," Lucifer spoke sadly after Beel released him.

"Do you regret what you did?" I asked him.

"I don't regret that I swore my allegiance to Diavolo in order to save Lilith's life, no. Regardless of my initial reason for taking that oath, I have great respect for Diavolo, and my desire to see his vision realised is genuine. I'm not doing it against my will. but as for the situation with Belphie...I don't know. At the time, I thought I had no other choice but to do what I did. But now, I'm not sure anymore. I don't know what the best course of action would have been, or whether there was something else I could have done."

Lucifer explained to us and I felt bad for the poor guy. He tried so hard to protect Belphie and make sure Diavolo didn't find out about his treason.

"Well, we've got a good grasp of what happened to get us to this point. So the question is, what do we do now?" Satan asked.

No one said anything because they have no idea what to do, except for me. I held Raven in my arms before standing up from the couch.

"There is something we can do. We go see Belphie."

"(Y/n)...!" Beel shouted happily before he flung his arms around me while squeezing poor Raven in between us.

"Hey, I know you're just taking advantage of the drama of the moment to hug (Y/n)! That's cheating!" Asmo shouted with a frown.

"And crushing me to death!" Raven shouted before he merged into my shadow and popped back out and he's in his normal dog form.

"Phew...that was close..." Raven mumbled while I laughed at him.

"Like, ya heard what Lucifer said, right? about why Belphie hates humans? I mean, he wants to wipe out humanity. I don't know how he's acted in front of you up to now, but the fact is he tricked ya, right? And yet you're tellin' me you still want to go see him? Even after all of that?" Mammon spoke with a concerned look.

"I admit, I did have my suspicions when I first met him and he still managed to trick me but, Belphie doesn't know about what happened to Lilith. I'd say it's time he learned the truth about her," I told him.

"Yeah...I mean, out of all of us, he'd probably want to know most of all," Levi agreed.

"The rest of us would to go see Belphie too if we could but..." Mammon trailed off.

"Diavolo has him locked up now, right? So if we went to see him, we'd basically be..." Asmo trailed off.

"...We'd be disobeying Diavolo, yeah," Satan spoke.

"This coming from the same demons who were once angels and started the Great Celestial War to protect their little sister?" Raven asked before he shifted into his smaller form and sat on my shoulder.

Lucifer didn't say anyting and then Levi said to him, "Awww, come on... Come oooon, Lucifer!" Levi begged him.

"D'AAAAH, ENOUGH OF THIS! Who's more important to you, Lucifer?! Your sweet little brother, or that hardheaded boss of yours?!" Mammon shouted.

"Pff... 'That hardheaded boss of yours'? lolol Are you talking about Lord Diavolo?" Levi asked.

"Couldn't you have worded that differently...?" Satan asked him.

"Still, I want to know the answer to that question, too. Lucifer, who's more important to you, Belphie or Diavolo?"

"...As if you even needed to ask. You already know the answer," Lucifer smirked before I grabbed Lucifer's hand which took him by surprise.

"...That's right. I see you already do know the answer, (Y/n). Now let's go. It's time to find Belphie," Lucifer told us before we left the mansion.
