Chapter 55

READER'S POV

I explained everything to Mammon about the reason why I kept quiet the whole time and the real reason why I wanted to make pacts with him and his brothers, except for Belphie. I also told him the reason why I came back to the House of Lamentation.

"...Aha. So lemme get this straight. You want to know why it is that Belphie hates humans. And you wanna understand why Lucifer went and shut him inside the attic. And in order to do that, you need to talk to Lucifer. Do I got that right?" Mammon asked and I nodded my head in agreement.

"Here's the thing, though: Lucifer's holed himself up inside his room, and he won't come out. Oh well! I guess I'm gonna have to help you, aren't I? All right then, this is your lucky day, 'cause now you've got Mammon on your side!" Mammon grinned.

"Oh lucky us..." Raven mumbled with a frown.

"Thanks Mammon, you're the best!" I smiled.

"R-Really? I am?! I'm the best?! ...I'm the best! AHAHAHAHA!" Mammon laughed before Raven smacked him upside the head.

"Ow!"

"Don't let it get to your head."

"Okay, we gotta start by  workin' out a plan to lure Lucifer out of his room! But first, let's go pay Levi a visit! We want all the help we can get, right?" Mammon told me before he grabbed my hand and led me out of the room.

We got to Levi's room and then Mammon knocked on the door.

"Heeey, Leviiii! I know you're in there! Heeey, answer the door, numbskull!" Mammon shouted.

"Oh brother, I don't have time for this. Mammon, Raven break down the door," I told him.

"Huh? Mn, I had no idea you were the type to go for somethin' like that. Still, I guess that would speed things up, huh?" Mammon told us before he and Raven broke down the door.

They stumbled a little after they broke down the door and I followed after them.

"See? what'd I tell you? he's right there. Hey, Levi!" Mammon shouted but he ignored us by looking at his pet fish.

"...So Henry, what do you think? Like, when it comes down to it, you just can't trust humans. They're lesser beings - evil, black hearted creatures. And yet all I had to do was make a pact with one, and suddenly it felt like we were friends, you know? Though the trust is that I was imagining it. I didn't realise that I was being used. I started sending messages and getting all excited that I had a human in my life and stuff. I mean, how could I be so stupid? I'm so disappointed in myself. It's unbelievable. You're my only REAL friend, Henry," Levi spoke to his fish.

My heart broke when he said those things because Satan told me that I had changed him and the others but after finding out that I only got close to them to make pacts with them, I feel like I've betrayed them in the worst possible way.

"Wow, all I can say is..." Mammon trailed off before shouting. "LAAAAAAAME!"

Raven and I looked at him with shocked expressions on our faces before he said to Levi.

"Look at you, sittin' there sobbing about all of your problems to a goldfish. I mean, c'mon! you're a sad, gloomy, shut-in of an otaku, you know that?!"

"Shut up! And don't use that word like it's an insult! you're a moron, (Y/n)'s a backstabbing human, and you can both...spontaneously combust for all I care."

"Wow, just wow, Mammon's right. That was just lame," Raven agreed before I glared at him.

"Raven!"

"What?"

"You know what? just die already. Right now. Please, I'm begging you," Levi told us.

"*sigh* it's no use. He's reverted back to his old sad and gloomy shut-in of an otaku self," Mammon grumbled.

"That's the second time you've said that, you know. You don't need to keep repeating it. I get it. You're right, that's what I am. I'm a sad, gloomy, annoying, useless, socially awakard, gross, recluse shut-in of an otaku...." Levi spoke in a gloomy tone.

Mammon, Raven and I sweat dropped when he said those things.

"C'mon, I didn't say all THAT. And anyway, it was all a misunderstanding, Levi! Like, I thought the same thing you did about (Y/n). But it seems makin' a pact with me didn't have anything to do with Belphie at all," Mammon explained to him.

"...Excuse me? Like, do you REALLY believe that, Mammon? people can SAY whatever they want, now can't they?" Levi told him with a frown.

"*sigh* ...He doesn't trust humans any farther than he can throw them at this point. So, what do we do now?" Mammon asked me and Raven.

"Levi, I'm so sorry for hurting you. I never meant for that to happen."

"RIght, you're sorry...a sorry excuse for a friend!" Levi shouted.

"Hey! don't be mean Levi!" Raven shouted before he wrapped his arm around my shoulders.

"C'mon, you sound like a third grader!" Mammon told him before I had an idea to make him feel better.

"You know Levi, the Lord of Shadow never doubted his true friend," I told him after remembering the TLS series I watched.

"...Yeah. The Lord of Corruption hatched a nefarious plan. He made it so that Henry and the Lord of Shadow ended up having to cross blades with each other. But the Lord of Shadow trusted Henry to the very end. Which is why he didn't strike the finishing blow when he had the chance," Levi told me before he grinned.

"He realised that Henry was his one true friend. That they shared a bond of friendship that went beyond race or social position!"

I laughed at his reaction because I knew that would put a smile on his face.

"There we go! The magic words that're the key to Levi's heart: true friend and TSL!" Mammon smiled.

"(Y/n)...!" Levi shouted before he flung his arms around me and hugged me tightly which took both Mammon and Raven by surprise.

"Hey, Levi, whoa! Whaddya think you're doin' throwing your arms around (Y/n) like that, huh?!" Mammon shouted.

"You're my true friend, (Y/n)!" Levi smiled as he rubbed his cheek against mine.

"You're easy to win over, you know that...? Eh, whatever. At least you seem to have figured out that it was all a misunderstanding, so that's progress. Anyway, Levi! you gotta help us come up with a plan to get Lucifer to come outta his room," Mammon told him.

"Huh? what do you mean?" Levi asked.

"Long story, Levi..." I told him after he pulled away from me.

"Something tells me I'm not going to like where this is heading..." Levi mumbled.

"That makes two of us," Raven commented before we decided to come up with a plan to lure Lucifer.

"You really are stupid," Satan commented after we came down into the underground tomb where the grimore is located.

"Mmhm, totally stupid!" Asmo agreed.

"Yep, stupid. That's about the only way to describe it," Levi agreed.

"Hey, shut up! I'm tired of walkin' along, quietly listenin' to you guys tearing into me. Callin' me stupid and moronic and idiotc and a money-grubber. I mean, what the hell?!" Mammon complained.

"All we said was that you're stupid," Beel told him.

"That's not the point! I mean, what exactly is it about me that you think is so moronic, huh?! C'mon, let's hear it!"

"What, exactly? I mean, like everything, really," Asmo told him.

"WHAT?!" Mammon shouted.

"In any event, I think we can safely say that out of all the plans  you've ever come up with, this one is the most moronic," Satan told him.

"Oh wow, yes. 100% agreed," Levi commented.

"Okay, Satan! if you're gonna be so critical, let's hear what bright ideas you've got! What would you do here, huh? Do you think Lucifer's just gonna come waltzin' outta his room after Lord Diavolo told him he's under house arrest?" Mammon asked and he didn't say anything after that.

"'Course not, right? no way he would! So we gotta find a way to lure out Mr.Loyal-and-Obedient. If you've got a plan in mind that's even more awesome than mine, let's hear it!" Mammon shouted.

"I don't."

"See, what'd I tell you? WHAT'D I TELL YOU?!" Mammon shouted at Satan.

"We know you plan is stupid, but we stupidly followed you down here because this stupid plan is our only option, you stupid Mammon!" Asmo frowned.

"Hey , c'mon! you were just lookin' for a way to say stupid as many times as you could!" Mammon complained.

"Still, the idea of using the grimoire to get Lucifer to come out of his room is more than a little crazy," Satan told him.

"He's right, remember what Beel said before? it grants the power to control a demon whether or not you have a pact," Raven told us while keeping an eye out.

"And on top of that, humans can use it whereas demons can't. I mean, it's like something straight out of an anime, am I right?! I love it!" Levi smiled.

"Kinda like the summoning justu from Naruto right?" I asked with a smile.

"Yeah! exactly!" Levi smiled back before we chuckled.

"But, seriously though, will that get Lucifer to come out of his room?" I asked the others.

"Yeah. I'm guessing that should do the trick," Asmo commented.

"You see, to us demons, the grimoire is equivalent to a soul," Satan told me.

"So, if it ends up in the hands of a human, Lucifer will get so angry he'll totally lose it, just like last time. And you can bet he'll come straight down here!" Mammon told us.

"Still, how are we going to manage to get away with this? Ever since the thing with Luke, that guard dog has been down here patrolling the underground tomb," Beel told us.

"Ah, you mean Ceberus? Ugh, I can't stand that monster of a dog. He won't obey anyone but lucifer!"

"Hey!" Raven shouted with a frown.

"No offence, Raven," Asmo told him.

"That's why we're bein' so quiet and sneaky, Beel. So he doesn't find us!" Mammon told us.

"You're the loudest one of all, Mammon. If you don't keep it down, Doggy McDogface is going to hear you, you know," Levi warned him.

"Doggy...McDogface?" Beel asked with a confused look.

"Huh, weird. Cerberus may be the fearsome guard dog of the DEvildom, but even he seems kind of cute when you call him Doggy McDogface," Asmo spoke with  a smirk.

"Mammon would be Greedy McGreedface. Asmo would Lusty McLustface," Levi called them their strange nicknames.

"Let's see, that would make Satan...Warthy McWrathface. Hmm, I dunno how well that one works," Asmo spoke.

"Lucifer's Pridy McPrideface," Satan commented which made me laugh.

"Guess Diavolo would be Lordy McLordface," Mammon commented.

"...Pff."

"PFHAHAHAHAHA!" Mammon laughed.

"Hey, come on, quiet down!" Beel told him while covering Mammon's mouth.

After joking around, I knew that we needed to do something about the grimoire.

"What is it, (Y/n)? That look in your eyes tells me that you want something - that you desire something," Asmo asked.

"Asmo, why not just say, 'You look like you want to ask a question?' it's quicker and less confusing," Levi commented.

"Can't we move the grimoire somewhere safer?" I asked the others.

"Ah, well you see..."

"It really needs to stay here, otherwise it would lose its meaning," Levi told me.

"Yeah, she'd get all lonely if we did that, you see," Mammon told me.

"She?" I asked with a confused look before Mammon glanced down at a stone coffin with the figure of a young girl sculpted into its lid. There, set atop of her chest, is the grimoire.

"Whose coffin is this?" I asked them.

"Lilith's," Satan told me which took me by surprise.

"She was our sister, the youngest of us. Though she wasn't actually laid to rest here. The coffin is empty," Asmo told me.

"The grimoire is a demon's soul. I think Lucifer placed it here as a way of saying that our hearts and souls are still right here with Lilith," Beel told me.

"...Our hearts are still with me Lilith. Yeah..." Levi mumbled.

Beel stood there in silence as he stared at the coffin. I guess he was remembering the day she fell from the heavens during the war.

"...Anyway, right now we need to focus on the grimoire here. All right, (Y/n). Go ahead and take it! That'll send Lucifer into a rage, and he'll come racin' down here hell-bent on killin' ya!"

"Okay, here goes nothing," I spoke.

"Careful," Raven told me before I reach towards the grimoire.

"Right, good. Guess you finally learned your place, huh? Just do what Mammon says, don't argue, and we're good!" Mammon smiled before we heard a loud growl

"Grrr....!"

"Yo, Beel. I'm tryin' to have a badass moment here, but you're ruinin' it with your growling stomach. Keep it down, will ya?!" Mammon shouted.

"That's not my stomach. And come to think of it, I feel like this isn't the first time we've had this conversation..."

"*huff* *huff*" We heard panting behind us.

"Satan, would you please get your nose away from my ear? And stop with the heavy breathing. Does my cheer beauty  have you that excited?" Asmo complained.

"What are you talking about? How could I have my nose your ear when I'm all the way here?" Satan asked Asmo.

"What? OKay, then who's...?"

"Growlrrr..."

"Hey, is it just me or does that sound an awful lot like...?" Levi trailed off.

We turned around and no surprise, Cerberus is right behind us and he looks angry.

"GROOOOAR!"

"EEEEEEEEK!" Asmo shouted.

"Uh oh...!"

"Mammon!" Beel shouted.

"I-I-I-I know, I know! (Y/n), the grimoire! Hurry!" Mammon shouted before I picked up the grimoire.

"J-J-J-J-Just grab the thing, and do it noooow!" Mammon shouted.

As soon as I touched it there was a bright light surrounding me. I shut my eyes tightly and then I heard a voice.

"...ey. ...hey...!"

I opened my eyes and I was shocked to see the scene before me.

"Ugh...dammit! no...this cannot be...! how...how could this happen...?!"

'Lucifer?' I asked myself before I noticed a woman that he held in his arms.

"Who's there?!" Lucifer shouted before he spotted Diavolo and Barbatos walking towards him.

"You two..." Lucifer mumbled.

"Yes, her injuries look severe. If she's exposed to Devildom air for much longer, she'll likely perish. She doesn't have long," Barbatos told him.

Lucifer's eyes widen in shock at this news.

"...elp...please...I beg you, Diavolo...help her. I don't care what happens to me! you've got to help her...! I know you have the means to do it!" Lucifer begged him.

"...Yes, I do have the means to help her. However, it might not be in the way you expect or desire. And if I am to do this, there are conditions."

"Conditions?" Lucifer asked him.

"You must pledge your loyalty to me, Lucifer," Diavolo told him.

"Young master...," Barbatos mumbled.

"I know what you're going to say, Barbatos. I'm taking a big risk here as well. The celestial realm has rendered its judgement, and I'll be interfering with that. But if I end up with you on my side, Lucifer, I'd say that's a risk well worth taking. Wouldn't you agree?" Diavolo asked.

"You're suggesting I pledge my loyalty...to the son of the Demon King...? ...ME?" Lucifer asked with a frown.

"I am sure there could be no greater disgrace to one such as you, he who once celebrated as the pride of the Celestial Realm. However, before you make your decision, perhaps you might want to have a look at yourself," Barbatos pointed out as Lucifer's wings turned black.

Lucifer glanced at his wings and his eyes widen, "My wings, they're black... I see, so then I've-"

"You don't have time to sit around trying to make up your mind," Barbatos spoke as he looked at the woman in Lucifer's arms.

"Don't you dare order me around!" Lucifer shouted before he looked down at the woman.

"I don't need time to make up my mind. I will stay true to my convictions. I've always done so, and I always will. That will never change, whether I am an angel or a demon...! if it means you'll have to ensure that she stays alive, I'll make any sacrifice I have to. So..."

Lucifer looked at Diavolo with a determined look on his face. "Diavolo, I hereby pledge my loyalty and allegiance to you...!"

"And I accept you allegiance. It is done, then," Diavolo spoke.

"You'd better save her!"

"Of course I will. Now, it's time to say your goodbyes," Diavolo told him before looked down at the woman in his arms.

"No matter how far apart we may be, no matter how much time passes, even if someday you're no longer yourself...I'll never forget you. And I'll always pray that you find happiness...always...I love you, Lilith."

My eyes widen when he called her that and then the world around me got brighter before the scene in front of me disappeared.
