Chapter 4
READER'S POV
After being introduced to the demon brothers, Mammon and I headed to the House of Lamentation. I was a little nervous to be in the demon world since I had my fair share with demons, both evil and friendly, and I didn't know what to expect now that I'm here as an exchange student. I don't know what was going to happen back in the children's home but, I hope Jamie is going to be all right without me for one year. I was the only person who's like family to him.
"...Ugh, I don't believe this. Of all the rotten luck..." Mammon whined all the way here. "Why should I have to look after some human? it's insulting, that's what it is!"
I rolled my eyes when he said this. Ever since we left the academy, Mammon has been complaining non-stop how he got stuck babysitting me. How does he think I feel about this? I was an orphaned kid who was living a normal life in the human world and then suddenly I've been transported into this world to be a part of this exchange program and I didn't get a say in it.
"That rotten bastard... Does he think he can scare me into doin' whatever he wants?" Mammon turned to look at me and he said to me.
"Just so we're clear...it's not like I can't say no to Lucifer, okay?! I only agreed to babysit you because, um... Well you know, because, uh..."
"Because what?" I asked Mammon.
"Anyway, it doesn't matter! Just don't go thinking that I'm scared of Lucifer or anything! because I'm not!" Mammon shouted at me which made me smirk.
"Oh yeah? then care to explain to me why your legs were shaking like a leaf when he glared and scolded you back there?"
Mammon looked at me with a shocked expression and then he loses it after snapping out of it.
"I was not shaking like a leaf! anyway, let's move on."
We walked through the gates and then we walked towards the big house. I have to admit, it looked creepy and scary on the outside but to me, it looks cool. Mammon opened the door and then we walked inside the house. I looked at the entryway and I was impressed with the decoration.
"This is the House of Lamentation. It's one of the dorms here at RAD. Well, it's not JUST one of the dorms. It's the dorm reserved for student council members. Lucifer, Asmo, and the others take every chance they can get to insult me. Callin' me scum, sayin' that I'm a money-grubber and stuff..."
"Well you are known as the Avatar of Greed for a reason," I mumbled quietly.
"...but, I'm an officer on the student council, same as them. The elite of the elite, the top of the RAD social pyramid. In other words, I'm a big shot. A REAL big shot. Like, even regular big shots are impressed by what a big shot I am. So don't you go thinking that I'm just some ordinary demon. I'm nothing like those other peons walking the halls here."
I sighed a little as Mammon went on and on about himself and how he is top dog around here. Yeah right, more like a big wussy when it comes to the scary Avatar of Pride.
"By the way, Diavolo is even MORE of a big shot. He's so important that he's got his own castle. That's why he doesn't live here with us. Anyway, the long and short of it is that us seven brothers all live together. Now, it's time I show you to your room..."
We were about to head up stairs until I saw a bulletin board. One of the flyers on it is advertising an opening for a part-time position.
"Hey, don't just stand there with your jaw open. Hurry up or I'm gonna leave ya behind. If there's something you want to ask me, you'd do it now."
I looked at Mammon and I said to him.
"Hey Mammon, what's the deal with the job listing? How does it work around here in Devildom?"
"Huh? if you're curious about that, you can read the flyer on the bulletin board, can't ya? Go take a look at it yourself later if you want. Wait, didn't ya get your own D.D.D.? it got that app called ':D JOBS' in there, right?"
"That's right."
"Why doncha give that a try if ya wanna find a job?"
"Uh, okay...?" I asked as I checked the app.
"Now, I'm gonna give you a piece of advice, so listen up. If you wanna survive even a day here in the Devildom, you'd better listen REAL close to what I'm about to say. If it ever looks like a demon is about to attack you..."
"Run for my life?" I cut him off.
"Uh, that's right. You can either do that or risk dying," Mammon told me in a surprised tone.
"How about this? I vote for YOU to die, Mammon!" a purple haired man shouted in angry tone.
"D'ah...! Levi..." Mammon shouted in a nervous tone before he introduced me to his brother.
"...Uh, l-listen up, human! This here is Leviathan, the Avatar of Envy. He's the third oldest of us brothers. Since his name's sorta hard to say, you can just call him Levi! Okay then, moving on," Mammon tried to escape from the situation but Levi stopped him.
"Mammon, give me back my money. Then go crawl in a hole and die."
"Come on, I told you I'd get it to you! I just need a little more time... and you still want me to die even after I give it back? That's real harsh, Levi!"
"You need a little more time? How much more?"
"A little more, okay?! A little more means a little more!"
"You've been telling me that for the last 200 years, Mammon."
'Two hundred years?! how old are these guys?' I asked myself as I continued to watch the brothers squabble.
"Hey, no! It hasn't been 200 years! It's been 260! Get it right, Levi!"
"Unbelievable. Seriously Mammon, you're-"
"I'm what? Scum? is that what you're gonna say?"
"-you're a lowlife and a waste of space."
"Hey! Come on, that's even worse!"
"Whatever...Just give me back my money. I need to buy the Blu-ray box set of Journey to the Devildom: The Tale Of a Little She-Devil and Her Reluctant Companion. The initial round of copies includes promotional tickets to a live event as a special bonus," Levi spoke happily with a twinkle in his eyes.
"I've got no idea what you're even talking about, Levi, but it doesn't matter! Because I don't even have any money to give you. How am I supposed to give back money I don't have, huh?!" Mammon argued.
"So then, you're telling me you refuse to pay me back?" Levi asked with a frown.
"...What? you looking for a fight, is that it?" Mammon asked him.
"Hey, knock it off you two! there will be no fighting around here!" I scolded them as I separated them.
"What's the deal with this human you've got with you? Are they your newest sponsor or something?" Levi asked him as he stared at me.
"Wha...no! I'd need someone rich enough to support me. Don't be crazy. Though now that I think about it...Levi, I'm pretty sure this one likes to collect the same stuff that you do. I bet you'd kill to have some of the stuff in (Y/n)'s collection. You know what I'm talking about...those doll things you always buy. What do you call 'em again?" Mammon asked with a smirk.
"Figurines," Levi and I spoke in unison which made him look at me with a surprised look on his face.
"Yeah, those!"
Levi looked at me and he asked me.
"So, you also collect figurines? Which ones? Ooh, do you have any of the main characters from Battle Princess Brigade? Or Girls Only or Diamond Dust?" Levi asked me.
"Not exactly, but, I have this collection of my favourite video game series including some anime figures like Tokyo Mew Mew."
Levi's eyes widen before he shouted.
"OH, NO WAY! NO WAAAAY...! You're SO lucky! ugh, the human world sounds AMAZING! I'm soooo jealous!" Levi spoke happily which made me chuckle before he realised something.
"...Hold on a minute. You've got to be kidding me...! That ass Mammon ran off!" Levi shouted angrily before I looked around and I realised that he was right, Mammon had taken off.
"What the hell?! where'd he go?" I asked him.
"Do you realise what just happened? Mammon used you as a distraction to get away from me...Or maybe I should say he used you as a sacrifice. I'll admit that Mammon is one of the scummiest scumbags you'll ever meet...a total lowlife. But still, that was pretty dumb of you letting him use you like that."
"I know, even I feel like an idiot," I told him with a frown.
"*Sigh* this is EXACTLY why humans are-" Levi stopped mid-sentence before his eyes twinkled. "...Wait a second. Humans...yes, that's it... Suddenly, I've got an idea."
"What idea?" I asked him.
"Listen, are you free right now? Of course you are. You've gotta be right?"
"Uh, well-"
"You know what? Never mind. Either way, you're coming with me," Levi told me before he grabbed my wrist.
Just then, my D.D.D buzzed and I checked my messages. No surprise, it was Mammon.
Mammon: Heya, I suddenly remembered I have some business I gotta take care of. So, if ya need something, just ask Levi.
Mammon: Oh, and just to make sure...Don't go around tellin' stuff to Lucifer, ya got that?
I couldn't believe that Mammon and first he threatens to eat me and then he decides to dump me with the third oldest. Since I've been chosen for this program, I wonder if they also know about me being able to see demons in the human world and how I can talk to them as well?
