Chapter 19
READER'S POV
The next day, I was in the garden playing fetch with Raven. I tossed the tennis ball for him and then he chased after it. He caught it in his mouth before bringing it back to me. I took the ball from him and I tossed it for him again. While Raven chased after it, I got a text message from Luke.
Luke: Can you come outside now?
Luke: I'm in front of the House of Lamentation.
"What's going on?" Raven asked me with a ball in his mouth.
"That was Luke, he wants to see me."
"Let's go."
Raven told me after he spat out the ball and then he hides in my shadow before I headed to the front entrance. I spotted Luke and I walked towards him.
"(Y/n)...! You came, thank you! I was worried...I don't know what I'd do if someone saw me hanging out in a place like this."
"Shh!! shut up! don't be so loud, or they'll know you're here."
"Yeah you're right. Okay let's keep our voices down," Luke spoke in a quieter tone.
"What are you doing here anyway?"
"I'll get straight to the point. I need you to let me spend the night in your room tonight. Please, I'm begging you!" Luke begged me.
I wanted to say no but, Luke might have a reason for wanting to stay here.
"All right but, keep quiet and do as I say."
Luke nodded his head before we headed inside. When we were in the hallways, I glanced at Shadow and he whispered to me.
"All clear."
I sighed in relief before we headed to Beel's room. I opened the door and he said to me.
"(Y/n), this isn't what I was talking about at all."
"Stop whining and get in," I told him and then Luke went inside. I closed the door behind me and I sighed in relief.
"I thought I asked to stay in your room, so what are we doing here in Beelzebud's?!"
"You're talking too loud. If you don't want the others to know you're here, you'd better keep it down," Beel told him.
"Answer the question!"
"Simple, no one can use my room right now," I told him.
"Wha? what do you mean no one can use it?"
"It's all because of the custard."
"The custard...?" Luke asked Beel in a confused tone.
"Mammon and I were getting a snack one night but that idiot decided to eat Beel's custard and when he did, Beel saw the whole thing and then he got so mad that he went on a rampage and he destroyed the wall that connected to the kitchen and to my room too and now it's in a mess."
"And until it's fixed, (Y/n) I have to share a room. We don't have a choice. Those were Lucifer's orders. I also don't remember asking anyone to pick up a dog from the street and bring it back here, not to mention one that never stops barking."
"Hey! Don't you compare me to a dog!" Luke shouted angrily.
"I heard that!" Raven shouted from my shadow. I stomped my foot on his head and then he whimpered before hiding back in the darkness.
Beel and Luke looked at me with a confused look.
"What was that?"
"Uh, nothing! must have been your imagination," I chuckled nervously when Beel asked me that.
"Anyway, I wasn't picked up off the street! I came here of my own free will!"
"Here drink this for now, and try to calm down," Beel told Luke before handing him over a drink.
"Wh-What's this supposed to be?" Luke asked him as he examined the juice. "It's red. It better not be some sort of demon drink...like some strange creature's blood or something! Tell me it's not!"
"It's just pomegranate juice," Beel told him.
"He's right, it's tasty," I told Luke.
"Wh...what?! Beelzebud, why are you being nice to me? it's creeping me out."
"Because you gave me cake once," Beel told him with a smile.
"He did?" I asked him.
"Did I? ...ah, right, you're talking about that one time..." Luke told him with a smile.
"When?" I asked the pair of them.
"It's nothing important, really. But in recent years I've actually been learning how to bake cakes and pastries and things."
"Wow, that's really cool!"
"N-No, it's nothing so impressive. I mean, I've been doing it for about 300 years or so. I'm still an amateur! But yes, it's true. Michael loves sweets of all kinds, so I'd like to present him with a cake i made myself someday! That's why I'm doing it! Anyway, not too long ago I was testing out a new cake recipe, when Beel happened to walk by. And he mentioned he was hungry so..."
"Mm...just thinking back on it makes me wish I could have some right now..." Beel commented with a smile on his face.
"I only meant for him to sample it and give me his opinion, but he inhaled the entire thing in a single bite! He didn't even stop to taste it!"
I started laughing when Luke told me this because that was just like Beel.
"It was good and I told you so back then as well."
"He loves to eat, but his vocabulary is almost nonexistent. He'd make the worst food reporter ever."
I managed to calm myself down before sitting on the bed and I asked him.
"That reminds, why are you here? Did something happen between you and Simeon?"
Luke was silent for a moment before he finally spoke up and told us the reason why he's here.
"This is all Simeon's fault! I wouldn't be here if it weren't for him. He's getting way too chummy with these demons. We are angels, proud inhabitants of the Celestial Realm! And what's more, we report directly to Michael the Archangel himself! Yet because of this exchange program, we've been sent down here to the Devildom of all places - and what's more, we're supposed to associate with demons! It's unbelievable! I mean, we're talking about DEMONS here! Just the idea of speaking with one face-to-face is repulsive!"
"Um, let's not forget that I'm actually a demon myself..." Beel mumbled.
"Me too..." Raven whispered.
"If we go making friends with demons, what do you think is going to happen next, huh? I'll tell you what: we'll be corrupted. I'm always warning him about this, but he ignores me. Then he just leaves to have tea with Diavolo. He even suggested that I ask Barbatos to instruct me in finer points of baking pastries and cakes! Can you believe it?! True, it's said that Barbatos is the greatest pastry chef in all the three worlds, but he's a DEMON. Simeon won't listen to a thing I say! I could disappear off of the face of the earth for all he cared! In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if he even finds me annoying. Maybe he thinks of me like a do, too - a noisy dog that never shuts up!"
"Well, it's true you never shut up."
"He's right."
Beel and I tried telling him but Luke kept on ranting.
"Simeon would rather spend time with DEMONS than with me...!"
"Now I get it, he's jealous," I whispered to Beel which made him chuckle.
"I told Simeon our friendship was over, and then I strode right out of Purgatory Hall - that's our dorm - so I can't go crawling back now, not after I did that. Which is why I'm asking you to let me stay here for a while."
"Even though you hate demons?" Beel asked him.
"Well, what choice do I have?! this is the only place I could think of to go."
Beel and I glanced at each other and I told him.
"Beel, I'm leaving this up to you."
Beel had a little think and then he told Luke.
"Okay, Luke can stay here. I do owe him for giving me that cake, after all."
"Really? I can stay?!"
"Just make sure that my brothers don't find out about you. If they knew I was sheltering an angel, they'd kick me out of the dorm."
"All right, got it! Leave it to me! I'll make sure no one ever finds out! You think I'm about to let some demons find me?! I don't THINK so!"
"In that case, do us all a favour and be quiet!" Beel told him.
Luke covered his mouth making me chuckle.
"By the way, (Y/n). Is there something else you want to tell me?"
"Huh? what are you talking about?"
"Are you hiding something else from me?" Beel asked me.
"I don't know what you're talking about," I tried to throw him off but it was no use because Beel held up a bag of dog treats that I hid under my pillow.
"How did they get there?" I asked him.
"You tell me."
I sighed in defeat before I called out to Raven.
"Raven, you might as well come out they know you're here."
Raven came out from under the bed and then he jumps up onto the bed to sit next to me.
"AH! what is that?!" Luke shouted in a frighten tone.
"A shape-shfiter hound? it's not everyday you get to see these guys running around in Devildom," Beel told me as he petted Raven's head.
"His name is Raven. I found him injured back in the human world and once he healed up, I thought he went home but, after I came here, he followed me and he's been stuck to me like glue ever since," I told Beel and Luke as I scratched behind Raven's ear.
"How long have you kept him hidden?" Beel asked me.
"Quite a while. Raven has been hiding in the shadows and he's been camouflaging himself in my shadow too so that way Lucifer or the others don't see him. I'm actually surprised that they haven't noticed until now. Speaking of which, how did you know that I was hiding a pet demon hound?"
"I was getting hungry until I found these under your pillow."
"Don't tell me, you ate one of the biscuits and it tasted awful."
"Exactly."
"Please don't tell Lucifer about this, he'll throw Raven out of the dorm and make him sleep on the streets and I don't want that happening to him," I told him as I hugged Raven close to my chest while holding him like a baby.
"But he's a dog demon, you shouldn't even keep him as a pet. I warned you, you shouldn't trust a demon."
Raven growled at Luke loudly making him jump back in fright and hide behind Beel.
"You don't understand! (Y/n) saved me and nurse me back to health! Plus she's the only human who can see me and the other demons back in the human world!" Raven shouted angrily which took Luke and Beel by surprise.
"What does he mean by that?" Beel asked me.
"What he says is the truth. I am the only one who can see him and the other demons in the human world. Don't ask me how I can because even I don't have a clue why I'm able to see them. Anyway, with this ability, I was able to feed some of the demons who struggled to find food and that includes the runts. However, I did have my fair share of being chased by evil demons as well."
"Oh, so that's why you're not so bothered by getting eaten by a demon," Luke pointed out.
"Exactly, because I've been there and done that. If hadn't it been for Raven and the friendly demons, I wouldn't be here."
"That's true, before we arrived here, poor (Y/n) was being chased by a couple who wanted to eat her," Raven told them.
"That's right, I'm just grateful to that guy whoever he is for saving me."
"What guy?" Luke asked me.
"I don't know, I didn't see his face. He was wearing a hood so, it was hard to tell."
Raven nodded his head in agreement and then Beel asked me.
"What about your parents? don't they know that you can see demons?"
I looked away sadly and I told him.
"I don't know...I never knew them. In fact, I don't even know if they're dead or alive."
Beel and Luke looked at me with confused expressions until Raven told them.
"(Y/n) was left at an orphanage when she was a baby. Her parents haven't been seen or have gotten in contact with her in 17 years."
Luke and Beel were surprised when they heard this and then they gave me the sympathy looks.
"I'm sorry, (Y/n). I didn't know," Beel apologised to me.
"It's fine, it doesn't bother me like it used to. Although, a part of me still wonders why they left me in the first place or why they didn't want me. I came to conclusion that it was because of my ability to see demons because that's what the other kids at the orphanage used to say to me even now. I pretty much became an outcast so, I didn't have many friends well, except for demons like Raven," I told Beel and Luke before I hugged Raven while he licked my cheek.
"I see, does anyone else aside from the demons from the human world know about this?" Luke asked me and I shook my head for a no.
"No, but, have you, Siemon or Michael seen or met anyone who looks a bit like me?" I asked Luke.
"I don't think so but, if we do, I'll let you know."
"Until then, you've got us and Raven too," Beel commented before he petted Raven's head.
"Thanks you guys," I spoke with a smile on my face.
