I wake up early the next morning to a giant knot in my stomach. Not because of illness, but because of nerves.
The sunrise barely came through my single window, barely revealing a new object in my room.
On my dresser, was a small black box which i had assumed was for me.
With my trembling and sweaty hands, it was hard to get a firm grip on the opening. Nevertheless, i had one and pulled off the top.
Sleeping in an ebony velvet was a silver necklace. A needle pin was the base, supporting a set of wings near the ball and two intertwining snakes around the shaft.
The symbol of medicine.
I take the fresh jewelry, bending my neck forward and placing the cool metal around myself. My fingers subconsciously begin to inspect the foreign object, and flinch when i touch the bottom.
The end of the needle is sharp, and shaped almost as a screw.
What an odd necklace.
I decide to leave it alone, but tuck it inside my uniform for safe keeping and for no suspicion among the other staff.
Without stalling any longer, i decide to make my way to Mr. Malik's for our meeting.
~;)~
knock knock knock
"You may enter."
I take in a deep breath and clench my fists, trying to squeeze out the anxiety.
Here goes nothing
I open the door and quietly walk up the stairs, each step setting off a line of fireworks in my stomach.
"Hello." I nod, slapping on an stiff smile and fiddling with my hands.
"Good morning, Mr. Horan." Zayn hums, looking as if he's finishing up some paperwork.
The room is silent, the only noise being the shuffling of papers and my own being heart.
With a sigh, he scribbles his name on a document then files the papers away, giving me his attention.
Im bewildered.
"How are you this crisp morning?" He looks up to me, his chin raised as it always is. His hands are folded across his desk, and he leans towards me with interest.
"Somewhat nervous but well, thank you, yourself?" I ask, hoping the whole appointment wouldn't be this awkward and forced.
His lips push up against his cheeks. "I find myself in the same state as you, although there is no reason to be nervous," He says, seeming to reassure himself more than me, "How is Harry?"
"He is well, although he suffered an injury to his elbow last evening," I frown, recalling last night, "I recommended him to Liam since he seemed informed on treatments."
"How unfortunate," He murmured, "Did you tell the location of the office?"
"No, I merely recommended him." I tell, wondering if something was wrong.
"I see," He sighed, pulling himself up from his chair, "For our lesson today, I will let you choose what we cover. Would you prefer to begin with muscles, bones, or neurons?"
Hmm
Lets see: muscles, bones or neurons? Ill choose bones since its first alphabetically.
"Bones please." I request, taking a seat in the chair he had next to his desk.
He nodded, swiveling his chair around and walking up to his bookshelf.
It looked as if another journal was added to the top shelf, although I have no idea what it could be about.
He shuffles through multiple journal on the shelf, pulling some out and flipping through the pages to check the content.
The title should be on the spine of the journal?
He finally settles on a leather green journal with withered yellow pages.
"Any specific place you'd like to begin?" He hummed, looking at me with his dark eyes. His head was rested in his hand which was supported by his elbow.
Looking at his hand made me think, the hand!
"The hand and arm please." I request, watching as he grabs the journal and scans through the crinkling pages.
His thumb stops the next page from flipping, and creases down the binder of the journal.
"What a shame," He murmurs, "This book seems to have no diagrams, but the content is rich."
No diagrams in an anatomy book?
"The hand consists of many short bones, the phalanges, metacarpals and carpals," He begins to read, keeping his eyes down, "Fingers, knuckles and wrist."
"The arm consists of the radius and ulna." He read.
His phalanges trace two bones that were supposedly in his forearm.
Um..What?
Which one was which?
I glance at my own arm, pressing into my flesh until I felt my bone.
"Ulna?" I question, pointing to the bone that followed my thumb.
He placed on hand on the book, and removed his head from his hand. He reached over the desk, gently tracing a line down the bone connected to my pinky.
"Ulna." He corrected, biting his cheek.
"I see," I stuttered, "Thank you."
His touch made me feel warm, making me feel even more embarrassed.
Now isn't the time to be homosexual, Niall!
I cant help it!
"The arm consists of the humorous-" He pauses, glancing up at me and grabbing his humorous to clarify, "Which is the upper arm."
"To go into further detail of the bone, we can discuss many classifications. Short bones, long bones, irregular bones, flat bones and sesamoid bones." He listed off the types on his fingers, watching me for any confusion.
He was so intelligent!
"Short bones are found in your wrist, long bones in the leg, irregular bones in the vertebra, flat bones in the shoulder and sesamoid bones on joints." He told steadily, going from his head now and not the book.
"The bones are made of spongy bone and compact bone. Spongy is on the epiphysis and is porous. Compact is dense and on the diaphysis of the bone." He explained, a gleam of amusement in his eye.
He looked back at me, a small smile on his lips, "Do you follow?"
hell no,
Who even is this person in front of me? Zayn Malik? He must really love his job....
"Slightly," I nervously chuckle, "What is a vertebra?"
"Your spine." He explains, answering me in a heartbeat.
"What is that?" I shyly ask, feeling stupid in the presence of the anatomy warlock.
He stands up and turns his back to me and attempts to point at his back but gives up.
"Please stand up." He requests, walking over to me.
I instantly stand, but on shaky legs.
He stands behind me, so close that I can feel his breath on my neck and the heat radiating off of his body.
"I see you're wearing the necklace I've made you," He approves, "I am glad."
I don't respond, keeping my eyes shut.
"This," He almost whispers, slowly dragging his fingers down my back, "Is your spine."
I honestly couldn't control my breathing, I felt I had just ran a marathon with the way my heart was beating.
I'm sure he could hear it too.
"Niall?" He calls, grabbing my attention.
"Yes?" I clear my throat, trying to make myself seem less nervous than I am.
His head leans forward, resting on my shoulder. As he speaks, his lips brush my ear, "I find myself in the same state as you." He repeats himself from earlier this morning.
"If you have the same desires as I," He begins, moving his hands to my waist, "We don't have to keep this professional."
