Chapter 29 - A Tad Strange
Dipper ran as fast as he could back to the throne room, despite the pain in his stomach and the wobbling of his legs. The book felt and looked very ancient and he was sure that no one has read this book for millions of years.
When he arrived, Dipper saw Bill battling with Tad. All by himself. Blue and purple fire that did not burn circled them both.
Ha. Bold of those traitor henchmaniacs to assume that Bill also ate a bread roll.
"Bill!" He called out. "I got it!"
Dipper had never felt so weak without his magic. He felt like a full human again.
Bill paused for half a second to look at him. The blond then hurled a fireball in the other direction and magicked some smoke around the area so Tad wouldn't see him. Dipper could hear Tad's roars of frustration.
Bill teleported next to Dipper and he gave him the book. As the demon was flipping through the pages, Dipper said, "The henchmaniacs, 8-Ball and Teeth, were traitors. They were the ones that lowered the defenses and they poisoned the roll I ate earlier that canceled all of my magic. They said that..." Dipper bit his lip. "That you used to be a great king, but now you're human and we are...weak."
Bill was murderously silent. "What of them now?"
"They died. My fire power...I think it was too much for them."
Bill's lips thinned. "Good. Now, this book has a spell that will conjure a portal to the Nightmare Realm and this portal will be sealed shut forever, so no one that goes through this portal would never come back out." He looked Dipper in the eye. "I need to perfect this spell so that we'll all be safe. Go hide somewhere other than this room so that Tad can't get you."
"I can distract him as a human. I don't need magic. We are all counting on you to get this spell perfected so that Tad Strange won't be a threat anymore. Please just let me go out there. Trust me, I can do this." Dipper put a hand on Bill's shoulder.
Bill thought for a moment. He then looked up at Dipper and he was surprised to see that there was a line of silver glistening in them. "Do your worst, Pine Tree. Make it count. Just for five minutes."
Dipper nodded and ran deeper into the throne room.
Five minutes. He could do this.
___
Bill's breathing became quick and unsteady once he saw Dipper run through the smoke where Strange was.
He shouldn't get worried about Pine Tree—couldn't. He had seen what he could do without magic. He even had more human strength than Bill himself, but he didn't want to tell Pine Tree that.
Bill flipped through the pages and scanned the pages so quickly for the spell that his index finger already stung like hell from a paper cut or two. He didn't want to heal it—he needed to save all his magic for the portal. Portals always took out a big chunk of his magic. He was the only type of demon who could summon portals to different realms, him being a dream demon, and it always took out a big chunk of his magic. Mind reading and slipping through dreams were something that just took him half a thought to do. Any of those things were impossible for a regular demon like Dipper to do.
There! Bill bit his lip as he quickly translated the title, which was in a demon language he knew too well. The demonic language has not changed in eons.
The spell was short but it would take a lot of his magic. It might even turn him human like what Dipper used to be, just by the amount of magic this damned portal needs.
He took a deep breath and began saying the spell in the ancient language in his head, and conjuring up his magic, diving deep, deep, deep to the bottom and then when it is ready, it will all be released.
He just hoped it was enough. He'd never gone this deep into his magic before.
But he knew Dipper believed in him. Bill won't give up on his Pine Tree. He also will not give up on himself.
___
Dipper took a deep breath and launched himself into the chaos.
He could do this. Before he turned into a demon, which basically only gave him magic, he functioned just fine without. He also didn't have the Journal—but he proved that he was capable without it after Gideon's robot.
Five minutes. That's all that Bill needed.
The smoke cleared and Dipper saw Tad Strange for the second time after that encounter in the forest. He was exactly the same the last time he'd seen him: long limbs covered in black fancy clothes with purple hair so dark it looked black. There was also that stupid bowler's hat.
Strange was floating himself in the air and he looked pissed.
He turned around and his glowing eyes, like Bill's, only they were purple, landed on Dipper. And then he grinned.
Dipper snarled. He wouldn't be afraid.
The demon slowly lowered himself to the ground. He purred, "You certainly look better the last time I saw you."
"What do you want," Dipper snapped.
"Oh, Pine Tree," Tad Strange cooed mockingly. "Haven't you wondered why I've been attacking you and not your beloved?"
Dipper stayed silent. Let him talk. We need time.
"You are a child of the stars," Dipper's entire body froze as Tad hissed. "You are the only one alive who can defeat me. And that is why I must defeat you."
Dipper's voice didn't betray him as he shot back, "Good luck, considering the other times you've attacked me. You didn't win. You will never win."
Tad began to circle him. Dipper circled back. Tad was saying something Dipper didn't care to pay attention to—he was paying attention to the gloved hand conjuring up magic. Dipper fought to not bite his lip as he readied.
Strange went on, "Your magic is gone, so is Bill's. The henchmaniacs are incapacitated and have run out of the throne room. Right now, you are just a bug waiting to be stepped on. I've got you right where I want you."
Dipper sprinted for a table left over from the party and he flipped it over and went behind it as Tad shot a purple fireball.
His breathing quickened as he ducks under another table, just as Tad incinerated the table he'd just flipped over.
He grabbed a leg of what was left of that destroyed table and used his demon strength to break it off. He ducked and rolled again as warmth spread over his back as the table next to him went up in flames too.
"Oh, Dipper," he heard Tad say sweetly after a moment, but there was a murderous undertone in it that made Dipper want to scream and run but he didn't. "Where are you?" Instead, Dipper ran out in the open. He needed to distract him. He also needed to stay alive for the spell to work.
Warmth at his back again. He was running in zigzag patterns, in circles, anything to make Strange miss him every single time. He heard Tad get frustrated as he yelled.
Dipper whirled around and held up the table leg like a sword. Guess I'm fighting a demon with a table today.
Tad shattered it in his hands without even looking at it.
No table then. I can work with this. Dipper couldn't remember any runes from the journal that could protect himself with magic.
Wait. That's it!
Dipper then attacked Tad's mind.
___
Bill's breathing quickened as he heard Tad get frustrated. He heard his little monologue about Bill not having magic right now, which was definitely untrue. He didn't eat anything today and he was glad he didn't.
Alright. I think I got this.
Bill conjured up all of his magic and walked into the throne room to lock up Tad Strange in the Nightmare Realm forever.
Bill took a deep breath as he tried not to focus on Pine Tree and yelled the spell and released all of his magic at the same time.
___
Dipper had only teased Tad's mind so Bill would have time. He didn't really hurt him. He'd just dug his mental claws down Tad's barrier and that piece of shit flinched.
Good. Dipper steadied his breathing and distracted Tad like this until—
He felt Bill's magic. He looked behind him and saw Bill in the entrance to the throne room and there were blue swirls circling around him as he held up that ancient book and chanted the spell. Well, curse.
Dipper unlatched his mind from Tad's and ran for the entrance beside Bill and watched.
___
Bill's blood was roaring so loud in his ears that he couldn't hear himself speak. The pressure in his head was immense and all he could do was just chant and chant and chant.
He looked up to see Tad Strange frozen where he was standing. He looked so utterly furious that Bill wanted to laugh at him but he wouldn't jeopardize this.
For Pine Tree. For the henchmaniacs. For the Fearamid. For Pine Tree's family. For Gravity Falls. For the world.
And then a portal opened above that purple demon. A portal of black that seemed to be sucking in all the light, everything that was good.
Bill felt something trickle out of his nose, but he didn't stop.
He saw swirls of blue light eddy around the entire throne room, including Bill. He barely even registered his Pine Tree standing beside him, supporting him, even loving him.
And Bill loved him too. More than he loved himself. More than he loved power.
Just before Tad Strange was sucked into the Nightmare Realm for the rest of his miserable life, that shit demon flung out a hand and Bill had barely stayed conscious long enough to close the portal forever.
___
Am I dead? Dipper didn't know. He felt kinda warm. And weak. He heard the voices of people. Wait—people!
He furled and unfurled his fingers and opened his eyes to a beautiful blue color and clouds and the bright sun.
The sky.
He wasn't in his room, where that window was. He pinched himself.
He wasn't dreaming.
Bill Cipher defeated Tad Strange and Weirdmageddon was over.
Oh no. Where was Bill?!
He shot up, which made him dizzy, and he looked around for Bill. He was lying right next to him, just now waking up. Thank God.
"Bill," he breathed. "I think you just ended Weirdmageddon. And Tad Strange!" Dipper grinned and laughed. They did it! Weirdmageddon was not global anymore!
Bill opened his eyes and Dipper screamed.
Bill shot up. "What—what?"
"Your eyes—they're not glowing anymore. I think," Dipper breathed in and then breathed out. "I think right before Tad went through, he sent a bolt of magic at both at us which turned us human." Ugh. Tad.
Bill blinked with his weird normal fucking human eyes. He then turned to Dipper again and smiled. And then grinned. And then tears down his cheeks and Dipper pounced on Bill and hugged him.
Bill hugged back and Dipper felt his shirt get wet.
"We did find another way to end Weirdmageddon," Bill whispered.
"Yeah," Dipper felt tears rolling down his own cheeks. "We did." And then he pulled back and kissed his love.
They were sitting like that for a while in the town square. That's when he heard Pyronica's voice.
Dipper jumped in surprise. He and Bill stood up and beheld the henchmaniacs, but—
"You're human!" Dipper squeaked.
Pyronica looked down that herself—her hair was the same color as before, although it was covering an eye. She had brown eyes and dark skin and she was wearing a magenta dress with white gloves and boots.
"This is so weird..." She said.
Dipper ran up to her and hugged her. She immediately squeezed him.
A few minutes after that, they found out that the rest of the henchmaniacs had been turned human too.
The people of Gravity Falls around them were reuniting with their families. Dipper stayed beside Bill and Pyronica, looking around for his own.
Suddenly, someone knocked him to the ground and instinct made him want to punch them, but he recognized that brown hair. That squeal.
"Mabel!" Dipper wrapped his arms around her and he was almost crying again.
"Dipper!" She, at last, pulled back but didn't let go. They helped each other stand up and Mabel said, "How did—how did Weirdmageddon end?"
Dipper wanted to let out a long-suffering groan as he said, "It's a very long story, but we'll tell you it later. Where's the rest of everyone?"
"Right here." And he felt Grunkle Stan put his arms around him. Then Mabel again. He heard Grunkle Ford's hefty laughter as he joined in. And then Wendy. And Soos.
A family finally reunited forever.
They all pulled back after a minute or two. Dipper saw Ford bristle a bit when he saw Bill but he didn't do or say anything. He was still cautious.
Dipper went up to Bill and squeezed his hand. He faced his family and said, "Bill ended Weirdmageddon and saved my life while he was at it. And he saved the world." He waved his free hand to Pyronica. "This is Pyronica," she waved, "She's been my friend ever since the deal happened four years ago."
Mabel was first to shake Pyro's gloved hand enthusiastically. "Love your hair!" She said. Pyronica grinned.
Dipper leaned his head against Bill's shoulder. "I'm guessing you have nowhere to stay tonight," he said.
Bill hummed as he put an arm around his waist. "Yes, it's a shame that I have no one to stay with." He sighed dramatically.
Dipper grabbed his hand and went up to Ford instantly. "Can Bill stay with us?"
Ford blanched. "What—"
Dipper shrugged. "Sorry that that was abrupt but uh, Bill is harmless. And I know you've begun to trust him. I also want to let you know that he's a hero. He was the savior, not me."
Ford lifted a brow at him but looked Bill from head to toe. "Okay—"
Dipper immediately hugged his uncle.
Ford laughed and patted his back. "Ha, I just wanted to say that there's no funny business or magic doing inside the shack."
Dipper winced at Bill. "Well, we were both just turned human so...I don't think you have to worry about that." He stepped out of Ford's grip.
Bill leaned in close to whisper in Dipper's ear, "I dunno about 'funny business'." Dipper elbowed him in the ribs and Bill gave a distinctively human yelp. Dipper smiled.
Wendy went over to shake Bill's hand. "How did you end it?" She asked.
"It was a very ancient spell that required all of my magic. My magic was tethered to the very beginning of Weirdmageddon and we had to find a way to do it without me dying." He reached over to grab Dipper's hand and squeezed it.
Dipper smiled and squeezed back.
Wendy noted it. She smirked at them. "You take care of each other." And then she was off to talk to other townsfolk.
Dipper smiled at his family and said, "I want to visit the shack now."
Home.
___
Mabel had her own room now—the other room in the attic—and Dipper kept their old room where he and Dipper were now staying. Which meant they had to sleep in a twin-sized bed. It could barely fit both him and Bill.
That night, he looked at his and Bill's feet as they were almost dangling off the bed.
"I need a new bed," Dipper said.
Bill snuggled into his neck and kissed a spot there. Dipper's toes curled. "Mmm, worry about that later. I'm tired. We had a rough day."
Dipper scoffed, "Yeah, we did. I don't even want to reflect on today."
"Ugh, same. It so weird now that I have no magic powers anymore. Now I have human strength. I hate human strength."
Dipper stuck out his tongue. "Yeah, that's going to take some time getting used to. We'll need to go out into the forest a lot and go to the gym." Dipper yawned. "Go hunt some monsters. Like old times."
"You're so strong, my little oak tree."
"Shut up."
"I love you."
"I love you too."
And then they fell asleep.
