Chapter 18 - Mad
Dipper snuck out the next morning. He wasn't one for goodbyes. He loved his family, he did, but he just couldn't stand to see their faces one last time. Dipper was a hugger—if he would have hugged one of them goodbye, the hug would last longer and he would squeeze harder, and they would know that something was not right.
The hospital was just on the other side of town. There was only one since the population was too short for two.
Finally, savoring the heat of his jacket, he teleported inside of the now abandoned hospital. The thought bugged him because of all the horror stories he'd seen and watched, but he told himself that that shouldn't bother him since he was a monster now. But that just made the feeling worse.
He looked around the dark main entrance. He had not been here since Bill had possessed him during Mabel's play. He sent a pointed thought to Bill who'd just ignored him.
He summoned his yellow fire in a hand, lighting up the areas around him.
Now, where would these blood bags be? Dipper reached out to Bill on the other side. Bill told him that the closest ones were in the urgent emergency area—at the other side of the hospital. Dipper sighed, not knowing what this place looked like so he couldn't teleport over there.
He followed Bill's directions—left, right, right, left, keep going. Dipper felt like he was walking forever.
Until he heard someone. "Dipper? Dipper Pines? Is that you, or is this just another hallucination? I've been having a lot of those lately..."
Dipper froze in his tracks. He turned a bit.
It was someone he had seen frequently walking through town and a couple times at the Mystery Shack. They never had a real conversation, though. The man looked to be in his 20's, and he had a wedding ring on. His eyes were red and he had such baggy eyes. His clothes were torn. He must have lost his wife somehow, Dipper contemplated.
"Uhh..." Dipper didn't know what to say.
"We were engaged," the man sobbed, dropping to his knees. He was probably crazy...he didn't look healthy at all. "And then he took her!" Dipper didn't need to ask who he was talking about. Said demon stayed silent. The man didn't even look at the fire in Dipper's hand...
The man crawled toward him like he couldn't stand up anymore. Dipper took a step back before he could touch him.
The man looked at him with such desperateness that Dipper felt a pang of pity in his darkened heart. "Please help me find her," he pleaded.
Ahem, Bill interjected in his mind. His fiancée is a part of the throne. Bill gave the untold warning that the man would not get to marry this woman. Not during Weirdmageddon. Not ever perhaps.
Dipper took another step back, still needing to carry on his mission. "S-sorry, man," the man looked crestfallen, "but I haven't seen her anywhere." He began to walk away and forget this man forever and just leave him here to just be crazy for a while, he spoke again.
"You have flames coming out from your hand," he sounded distant. More distant than before, if that was the right word to use. "You...you're not—"
"I know," Dipper interrupted. Normal, was the word the man was going to use.
"You're not like the rest of us," the man said hurriedly like he was eager to get away from Dipper as fast as he could. But he still had some words to say, it seemed. "You're a monster—you may think I am because look at me. My mind has gone crazy. I'm always seeing things," the man kept twitching and twitching. It was starting to creep Dipper out a bit. "You're the monster, not me."
Dipper didn't want to hear it. He walked away at a fast pace, just wanting to get rid and forget of this fiasco forever. But the man didn't stop.
"You're a monster!"
Dipper didn't want to hear it. Before he could argue with himself, he used his magic to increase the pressure of the floorboards above the man and seconds later, the ceiling toppled down. Dipper had already teleported to the next hallway. But he still heard the yelling die and stop finally.
Dipper shivered, regretting what he'd done. He was going to get married. Did I...kill him?
No, you didn't. But you did well back there, Bill intervened. He wasn't going to last long there anyway. At least you put him out of his misery for the time being.
That doesn't make me feel any better, Dipper thought back. Time being?
He'll wake up soon. Bill said. Hey, Bill toned down his voice. It sounded reassuring... Wow, Bill's voice could be soft and reassuring? Gosh, who would have known? If it does make you feel any better, you won't need to kill anyone while you're with me. Or torture.
Bill did have some light in that tattered soul. Really? Dipper asked, unsurely. It did sound too good to be true.
Yes. I don't need anyone to kill, I'm just minutes away from getting what I want once you get the bags.
"Right," Dipper whispered weakly aloud, pulling his hood up over his hat. Dipper still felt the regret.
Dipper was worried that he wouldn't be feeling that feeling anymore once he would adjust to being a demon.
