Chapter 72

"Seriously, thank you so much. You really didn't have to do this."

Matty smiles, his new deep red glossy lipstick shimmering on his lips.

He throws an arm around my shoulders.

"It's no problem. We're happy to help. Since we don't have a tour coming up, the vans aren't being used so..." He laughs.

Matty lent his tour equipment vans to help with the move, so we wouldn't have to rent moving vans.

I stare into his eyes for a moment and he looks back at me.

I hug him tightly.

"Aw," he coos, hugging me tightly as he rubs my shoulder.

"I can't believe I'm moving."

Matty hums.

He then laughs.

"What?" I ask, backing up.

"I was about to kiss the top of your head. I would have gotten my gloss all in your hair."

"Well, thank you for restraining." I say, pushing away from him.

He shrugs.

"I could still do it." He says.

I punch him lightly on the arm.

He smiles.

I lean over to look at one of the boxes that's still open.

This one has some of my cds in it.

I reach my hand in, grabbing a few.

Neon pink lights, rectangle, "I Like It When You Sleep For You Are So Beautiful Yet So Unaware Of It."

Matty turns towards me again from the poster he was working off the wall.

"Masterpiece." he says.

I let out a laugh as I turn to put the cd back in the box, but spot my first Arctic Monkeys album. "Hey,"

He turns completely towards me at the change in the tone of my voice.

I bit the inside of my cheek, "How did you-" I cut myself off before sighing.

"Ah, never mind."

I place the cd back inside the box.

I start to close it, taping it up, when Matty comes up to me, grabbing my shoulders, turning me towards him.

"Hey." He says, brushing some of my hair out of my face as he cups my cheeks.

"You're moving. If you're having messy feelings, let them out. No one is going to judge you, and it'll make the process a whole lot easier if you're not holding back... I mean- Hold back a little because you can't move boxes if you're snotty but, you get my point."

"Thank you, I just..." I start, "It's not really about the move it's..."

Thoughts of Alex flash through my mind, quick bits of memories of him asking me to move in with him, of him telling me that he would come back for me.

Months of no contact, not a single word.

"How did you... Get over it? With George." I ask, quietly.

"How could you? After everything you'd been through, and to be in a band with one another? How did you get over it?"

Matty walks me over to the bed and sits me down, holding my hands in his lap.

"I didn't." he says.

"What do you mean?"

He inhales and takes a moment. "I did, but I didn't."

He looks at my face for a moment before continuing.

"I never stopped loving him. My love just changed. Both of us, we would do anything for one another, but... A relationship together like that just was not sustainable. It doesn't mean we can't still love one another dearly, but, it is what it is."

I take a second to think about it. "You moved on with Rome, didn't you?"

His face goes blank for a second.

"You know, surprisingly enough, we're not quite there yet."

"Seriously?" I ask.

"Yeah, he's quite shy."

"Matty!"

Throughout the rest of the day, Matty, Ellie, and Adam helped me move my things into the van.

Ross arrived a bit later to drive the first load over to the new flat and unload things with Ellie.

It was an incredibly long day of moving but one that I think went rather well, aside from the tearful goodbye with my mum and the stoic goodbye from my dad.

Before I knew it, I was already placing the last box in the van, casting one final glance at my parents home.

Out of the corner of my eye it almost felt like I could see a light on down the road.

I ignored it, whispered a farewell under my breath, and climbed into the van after Matty.
