7: The Devil Incarnate
Lies.
All lies.
Adelaide thinks that Harry is surely the devil incarnate as the words roll off his tongue and fall from his mouth all too easily.
He starts to move from where he sits and Adelaide braces herself, ready to defend herself from his attack.
Harry notices and freezes, pain registering on his face as he sees that she is afraid of him.
And it wounds him deeply.
He swallows his hurt as best he can and instead holds his hands up in a show of compliance, that he means her no harm.
"Adelaide..." he begins but is cut off when her mouth parts slightly and he sees her fangs elongate themselves.
This is not how he pictured finding her.
Turned against him by someone who treated her so heinously in her former life.
How can she not remember?
He must try and get her to remember.
"Adelaide, do you know who I am?" he asks her.
"The enemy," she instantly replies, "my enemy."
"Why do you think that?" he responds.
"Because..." she begins and falters for a moment.
Images of his naked form entangled with Sabinè flow through her mind, the visions burn into her eyes even as she closes them and tries to shake them.
It hurts her heart deeply though she can't think why.
She does not remember anything with regards to Harry, of spending any time with him, conversing or even...
Even laying in bed by his side as Sabinè has.
"Because?" he sees the doubts in her mind and he presses her gently to answer him.
"Because he told me so!" she suddenly yells, "because you once loved me but left me for another..."
"I did not!" he cries, "I have been searching for you, frantic ever since he took you from me..."
Adelaide recoils in shock at his words.
"Jonathon did no such thing!" she argues, "he has been nothing but kind to me since-"
"Since when?" Harry interrupts her.
"Since..." she falters again, "since..."
"The last few days?" Harry offers, taking a tentative step towards her, "because that's how long you've been missing for Addie."
Adelaide shakes her head.
"You are mistaken," she replies, "and...and lies! He said you would tell me lies!" her voice begins to rise again.
"But Adelaide," Harry continues, taking another slow step, "if Sabinè and I are together, why has she been with yourself and Jonathon and not me? Why does she care what happens between you and Jonathon?"
Adelaide's eyes narrow as she listens to Harry.
"Why are you trying to lie to me? Confuse me?" she yells, "Jonathon said you-"
"He lies!" Harry suddenly yells back in desperation, "he treated you horribly Adelaide, he did unspeakable things and because you were betrothed to him you felt you had no choice but to let him!"
Adelaide puts her hand out in a gesture to stop Harry and shakes her head violently.
"He said you would try this, that you would say horrible things about him..." she backs away as Harry begins to slowly venture closer to her.
Harry looks at her sadly, his heart feels like it's breaking all over again that she does not believe him.
"Adelaide, his words were cruel and his actions even crueller," he tells her, "I can see your past and I saw how he let his friends have their way with you without your permission and it breaks me to know you endured such violation when," he stops as his voice cracks, "when you deserve the world."
He is so close to Adelaide that he can touch her.
And so he does.
He holds her head gently in his and shows her what he has told her.
Adelaide gasps and stands still in shock as the horrific images flood her mind.
And these are nothing compared to the ones of Harry and Sabinè together in bed.
She can finally no longer stand to see what is before her eyes and brings her arms up between Harry's, forcing him to release his hold on her.
Jonathon warned her about the mind manipulations that Harry could play and this was obviously a prime example of it.
Before Harry sees it coming, Adelaide's left arm swings back and hits him across the head, sending him flying across the floor.
"Enough of your tricks!" she seethes, "you are nothing but the devil himself, your tongue as slippery as your mind..." she advances towards him, her hands clenching at her sides.
Harry jumps to his feet, the shock of Adelaide hitting him now gone as his body goes into survival mode.
Adelaide stalks over to him, her hands delivering blow after blow to Harry's body but he does not retaliate.
He simply blocks her as best he can, trying to protect himself whilst ensuring he brings no harm to her in the process.
Harry continues to deflect the oncoming blows delivered by Adelaide or avoid them altogether thinking he might be able to wear her down.
Adelaide soon realises her blows are ineffective and lands a surprise kick to Harry's stomach that sends him back into the wall, his head hitting it hard.
He doesn't know whether he's more proud or worried at this point.
He's taught her everything she knows as a fighter so in that respect, he knows how she moves.
It still doesn't hurt any less.
He's still dazed by the hit to his head that he doesn't see her launch herself at him, her legs wrapping around his waist as her hands grasp his head, ready to tear it off.
He quickly grabs her by the wrists and twists her arms before turning and pushing the two of them against the wall, trapping her between himself and the wall.
Her head suddenly snaps forward and her forehead connects with Harry's, causing him to let go of her and stagger back, the painful blow has him groaning as she lets go of his waist.
Adelaide begins to deliver a series of kicks to Harry and again he does his best to deflect the blows without causing harm to her.
Frustration is growing within her and she quickly drops to the floor, kicking Harry's feet out from under him so that he almost falls but he's able to flip himself up onto his feet and keep his balance.
Adelaide screams as she launches herself through the air, Harry springs up and meets her but instead of grabbing his head as she plans, her teeth sink into the skin of his neck and the sharp tang of his blood coats her tongue as she claws at his face with her nails.
The taste shocks her and she immediately pulls back, letting go of Harry and landing on her feet, backing herself up against the wall as she stares at him.
Harry lands in the middle of the room, his breathing hard and fast as he looks at Adelaide.
Her tongue runs over her lips as the blood invades her being.
She closes her eyes at the sensation.
It's so familiar.
But it does something to her.
It brings her comfort.
It brings her contentment.
It brings her warmth.
She opens her eyes to see that Harry is now standing in front of her, his eyes searching her face for a sign.
Any sign that she remembers.
He can see that she is struggling internally and he hopes with all his heart that she is remembering.
"Adelaide?" he says, earning a terrified shake of her head in response.
It's a trick.
He is the devil and this is how he operates.
Mind manipulation.
Lies.
Adelaide hisses at him again, preparing to attack when he opens his mouth to speak.
"Nykin?" he whispers causing Adelaide to stop, her face one of pure shock as she stares.
She looks at him.
Really looks at him.
Harry.
Tentatively she reaches up and touches the bleeding marks on his face.
Harry holds his breath but then lets it go.
He can feel it.
She knows who he is now.
She remembers.
"Harry?" she touches his torn skin and tears spring to her eyes.
"Addie..." he whispers, not daring to touch her yet in case he frightens her again.
She sinks to the ground slowly, her back against the wall as she lands on the floor.
"What...where am I?" she asks, hugging her legs to her body.
Harry couches down in front of her, placing his hands gently on her knees.
"You don't know?" he pauses, "do you remember me?"
She looks at Harry as though he's lost his mind.
"Of course I do!" she says, "you're my Harry...aren't you?" she finishes in a whisper.
Harry reaches around to pull her to him as she in turn clings to him, her body sagging against his as she cries.
"What...what happened to me?" she sobs, against him as he gently rocks her, hushing her to ease her crying.
He knows that coming out of having your mind controlled by someone can be disorientating and frightening and it usually leaves the victim with no memory of it.
"Jonathon," Harry whispers, "he's one of us now..."
"W-what?" Adelaide sits up so she can look at Harry, "I don't..."
"He kidnapped you a few days ago," Harry explains, "he's been using mind control on you..." he trails off.
"And?" she presses him to continue.
He swallows nervously, not wanting to reveal what Jonathon has truly asked of her.
"Harry?" she asks, her voice stern.
"He," Harry pauses, "he wants you to kill me."
Adelaide's eyes widen in shock as she takes in the what he's told her and again she reaches up to touch his face.
"Did...did I do that?" she asks, horrified.
Harry looks down at the ground, nodding slowly.
"I just did my best to fend you off without hurting you," he said, "you put up a damn good fight though," he looks back up at her with a wry grin, "I've taught you well..." he chuckles.
"Oh Harry!" her expression is one of sadness which Harry can no longer bear.
"Addie," he gently lifts her chin with his fingers, "you didn't mean it my love, I know that."
She gives him a sad smile.
"Addie it does not matter," he smiles at her before kissing the tip of her nose, "what does matter is figuring out how we get you out of here."
