THIRD PERSON's POINT OF VIEW

Adam wallowed in the low whispers and gentle sounds of turning pages. He listened to them intently, keeping his breathing steady. It didn't take him long to feel drowsy again. It might be possible to catch up on a few hours after all.

He hasn't gotten enough sleep lately due to the never-ending requirements and simultaneously exams.

Maybe.

"You look rough," someone then muttered above him.

Adam's eyes shot open and tilted his head forward to let his sunglasses slide down his nose bridge. He squinted at the messy bun dangling above his head.

"So do you."

"You know a library is not for sleeping right?"

"Well good morning to you too, Toni Storm. And if a library is not for sleeping then why is there a fucking couch here?" Adam groaned and he rolled to his side, putting his hands under his face and closing his eyes again.

Next to his head, he felt an indent being made, a weird mixture of too-sweet perfume and cheap white wine wafting his way. It pleasantly twisted his stomach. He felt her heat looming over him.

"You know people have sex on here right?" Toni whispered next to his ear.

He jolted and fell off the couch right on some books that were still yet to be organized in their respected places. He lifted his face out of a stuffy textbook about medicine and rolled on his back. He peeled another book from under his ass and threw it to the side.

He heard her trying to contain her laughter.

"It does get cleaned every other week," carefully she slid off the couch and landed next to him. "Though that's probably not often enough."

Adam snorted at the mild disgust evident in her voice.

"So, you don't have a lovely clean bed at your apartment?" She asked.

"I do, a lovely clean bed that's located against a wall but hearing Kyle's snoring every night...ugh, not to mention Roddy keep rumbling words when he's cramming."

"Oh...then Bobby's with you as well. You're still living with them?"

Adam adjusted his sunglasses. "According to them, it'll be financially alright if the four of us stayed together. I bet they'll just miss me."

The girl wasn't able to contain her laughter at that, getting angry stares from the students that were still struggling to get through their exam period. She slapped her hand in front of her mouth and then went to whisper in his ear again.

"You're good at pretending, you know?"

He thought back to the time after they graduated. Kyle was the first one to suggest that they can still stay, split the bills since they're all attending the same university but different courses. Roddy was opposed at it at first but eventually agreed since Marina's studying at her hometown in college.

"Not really," Adam muttered.

He mindlessly patted around on the dark grey carpet until he eventually grasped his phone.

"They should be done by now," he said, unlocking his phone with his fingerprint and squinted to look at the time.

Toni didn't say anything. Adam bit his lip, hoping she didn't notice him moving on like that. A click of the tongue broke the silence.

"Cute homes screen."

Adam bit down on his lip, causing him to wince in pain.

"Jennie huh? I have to say I'm more biased towards Lisa myself."

He sat up and looked at her with wide eyes in surprise. She laughed at him wholeheartedly, this time not minding the dirty looks being thrown at her.

"My! Adam, you were the last person I thought would listen to BLACKPINK, more or less a little obsessed with them."

He shushed her. "That's fucking rude you know, peeping at someone's phone."

Toni waved her hand in front of her. "Please, I simply glanced. Don't be embarrassed about liking them. I'm convinced that Ddu-Du Ddu-Du should be the country's national anthem."

Talking about his favorite all-girl band wasn't exactly something that matched with this image of his was trying to maintain. But Adam couldn't pretend wasn't something he'd been craving. He had been quietly fanboying over them by himself, only exposing his adoration for the girls every now and then on the internet whilst using an almost entirely anonymous account, making it almost impossible to trace it back to him.

He had been thinking how nice it would've been to talk about them out loud to someone. Someone who wouldn't continuously laugh at him like Bobby, Roddy, and Kyle.

Toni noticed him hesitating and she shook her head at him. Out of the back pocket of her jeans, she fished out a cheetah-print pair of earphones. She presented them in the palm of her hand.

"I haven't had the chance to listen to their song that came out yesterday. I have a feeling you already have it downloaded on your phone," she slyly smiled at him and he rolled his eyes at her. Despite that, he took the earphones out of her hand.

"This stays between us alright," Adam pointed a finger at her, trying to come across as menacing as he could possibly be whilst blushing. She took the pinky finger that always stuck out a little when he pointed and wrapped her pinky around it.

"I promise that this stays between us."

Adam handed Toni an earphone and put BP's newest release as he had indeed downloaded and listened to it on repeat last night, every time unsatisfied about not appreciating the song enough as he was too intoxicated and distracted thinking about the woman next to her to properly concentrate.

He put in the other earphone and pressed play. From the corner of his eye, he anticipated Toni's reaction. Her eyes grew wider during the intro, gleaming with enthusiasm. She sat through most of the song beaming like that. As the song was approaching the end Adam went ahead and started putting some other songs into the queue.

"That's quite a playlist!"

"What did I fucking say?" he said slowly, turning his phone screen away from Toni.

"Again, just glancing," she shifted closer to him, trying to get a better "glance" at his phone screen. "You listen to Whistle I have yet to find people listening to it."

"Painfully underrated," Adam sighed.

"You can say that again."

He leaned back and settled against the disgusting public sex couch, one ear listening to cheerful melodies and the other listening to Toni going on about a concert of a certain band she likes. Cherished memories she spilled, providing visuals as she took out her phone showing him pictures and muted, shaky videos. For a moment the music in one ear drowned out. Toni's voice the only thing Adam was focusing on. He had grown pretty comfortable in her presence and voice. He would simply answer with a hum maybe even nothing more than huffing air out of his nose. He couldn't help but drift to sleep. He could barely put effort into not slumping into Toni, his head nodding against her shoulder.

"Leave it to me to bore you talking about things that you like," Toni giggled. It sounded strained.

Adam's closed lids twitched.

"You're not boring me," he said sincerely. "No, actually you're-"

"-How's work going for you?"

A familiar voice interrupted him. His eyes flickered open and he pushed his sunglasses into his hair. Intrigued eyes were looking at him, hinting at something.

"Wait, are you sure you guys are still pretending?" Piper Niven pointed at them. Awkwardly Adam and Toni straightened themselves.

"He's my friend before my fake partner, you know?" Toni said, puffing out her cheeks in annoyance. Piper pursed her lips and cheekily rolled her eyes at her which made Toni sputter, unable to expand defend herself. She fell silent when her eyes over her friend's shoulder, only now noticing the upperclassman standing behind her friend. The corner of her mouth tugged downwards and her nose scrunched.

"Piper...Gross."

Piper looked bewildered at the assumptions, dramatically looking around herself, unable to process that her friend would look at her like that.

"We're just here to grab a book, excuse you!"

"For God's sake, I work here!"

"Exactly! That's why I would never-!"

"-Didn't know your ass was a shelf," Adam scoffed, cocking his head towards the guy behind her shamelessly cupping her cheek with his free hand.

"Right, if you two aren't done pretending yet then can you get out of here?" Piper whined.

She didn't have to say it twice. Toni and Adam gathered themselves and walked away from the corner of the library turned love motel. Toni went back to whatever she was working on before she spotted him and Adam went back to his dorm, assuming that it was now peaceful enough to rest in. And when he got there it was. The three had fallen asleep, Kyle's snoring could be heard all the way from the hallway.

It must be nice.

When he settled back into bed, he continued to queue he had set up. And it didn't feel as good listening to it without a weirdly pleasant hangover smell and an exciting soft voice.
