How to Knife

While Callie rested to heal up, Rukhar took Slynella's advice. He brought Numi down to the classes as soon as he had brought Callie back to their room. Numi's clothes were still damp but there really wasn't anything he could do about that. Numi meanwhile was hiding in Rukhar's bag again. A lot of the people in the halls made her nervous, but seeing a dragonkin pushed her over the edge and she decided she was not coming out until they got where they were going. Rukhar didn't mind, he thought it was kind of cute. After a bit he got to the beginner classrooms.

"Hmm... Which one is assassin again..." He looked from door to door.

He passes the paladin classroom, and the racket made Numi curious enough to come back out of the bag. The door wasn't open, but she saw through the window as Rukhar passed it. The people inside were scary, but she was mesmerized by the fluid sword strikes and shield maneuvers. Then, she heard loud banging noises. The brawler class was next, and she saw an arrangement of large hammers and axes.

"So big!" She said, seeing them.

"Bigger than you even." Rukhar squished her cheeks gently.

Soft thunks proved they were at the right room.

"Here's the assassin class." Rukhar said. Numi climbed onto his shoulders to get a better view. The kids inside were tossing knives across the room with high accuracy, sometimes... A lot of missed knives covered the floor.

"What are those?" Numi asked, looking at the odd gloves each student wore.

"According to Jay, that's what assassins keep their knives in." Rukhar said.

His statement was confirmed as they saw one student pull another set if knives from her glove.

"I guess for once he wasn't kidding." Rukhar added.

"So cool!" Numi was starry eyed.

"Hey big guy!" A voice was heard from behind Rukhar. "What do you think you're doing?"

A tall elf was standing, arms crossed.

"Oh, I was just taking Numi here to see the class." Rukhar said.

"Suuure. Where is this 'Numi'?"

Numi peeked around Rukhar's head. "Hello!"

The elf was at a loss for words. "Ah." She settled on. "She your kid?"

Rukhar turned bright red. "N-no!"

The elf laughed. "I'm pulling your leg. But hey, your the one dating one of those squid girls, so I'm sure everyone will arrive at that conclusion."

"Har har." Rukhar said.

"Well don't let me stop you." The elf said. "Just uh, you look creepy like that. Going in is perfectly fine."

"I'll write that down..." Rukhar said as the elf left.

He didn't go inside however. Common practice says to not put something interesting in front of 50 kids with knives.

Rukhar left with Numi is short while later.

"That was so cool!" Numi said. "I wanna do that too!"

"First, we need to find you the right sized weapon." Rukhar said.

"Why?" Numi asked.

"Because you're little, and these things can be heavy." Rukhar said. He put Numi down. "Like this arrow." He took an arrow from his back. "Try and lift it.

Numi tried, and she could pick the arrow up, but doing anything further was not going to happen. The weight distribution was messing Numi up.

"Why is it so heavy?" Numi asked.

"It's made of a special metal, and it's top heavy." Rukhar said. "Callie showed me her roller, and it is actually fairly light for a heavy weapon."

"No! The roller is the heaviest weapon there is!" Numi insisted. "I use one too!"

"Maybe for you. Here, try my bow." Rukhar put his bow down.

Unsurprisingly, Numi could barely move it at all. It weighed more than she did.

"See? Heavy." Rukhar said, picking the bow back up. He patted Numi on the head. "And this is just a bow. Callie's hammer is like 5 times as heavy."

"Why?" Numi asked. "That sounds like too much."

Rukhar was not expecting this, stupidly. The question was to explain how violent the Lost Realm is, or try and brush it off.

"A heavier hammer can do things faster." He said.

"Great escape Rukhar." He thought to himself.

"Like in a fight?" Numi asked.

Rukhar had no easy answer for this.

"Among other things.... Yes..." He said. "The Lost Realm is full of mean creatures that want to hurt you." Rukhar said sadly. "But this is the safest place possible." He added.

"Why is everything so mean?" Numi teared up a small amount.

"I don't know." Rukhar said. "You remember that spider that was chasing you? A lot of things are just looking for food, and we have to protect ourselves."

Numi nodded. "It's very scary... I hope I don't have to hurt anything."

"I think that's another reason Slynella said you should be an assassin. They get to use sleep gas and things, so you don't have to kill to get away." Rukhar said on a considerably more positive note.

"That's better I guess..." Numi said.

"Anyways, let's go to the training dojo. They have test weapons there." Rukhar said. "Including throwing knives."

"Ooh! Ok." Numi said, excited.

The pair left for the dojo.

A few minutes later.

"We're here!" Rukhar said. Numi had gotten back into his bag. She poked her head out. There were training dummies all along one wall and targets along another. Mats covered the floor and several wooden cabinets were by the door.

"What's in there?" Numi asked, pointing to one of the cabinets.

"Oh, those are the training weapons. They are a but lighter than the classroom variety." Rukhar said.

"But a little bit won't help if everything is as heavy as your things!" Numi said.

"Oh. Yeah I had this custom made. The higher classes let you use your own equipment." Rukhar said. "The actual class set is light."

He opened a cabinet, and pulled out a glove.

"Here's the knife glove. Now, the best thing about it, is it can be adjusted to fit." Rukhar said. He gave it to Numi.

She put it on. It was far to large. So Rukhar went to tightening the straps. It took a few minutes, but he got it to stay on.

Numi looked at the glove. "So how do I make it... Knife?"

"I have absolutely no idea. Hang on, try to uh... Flick your wrist." Rukhar said, thinking back to what he saw in the class they watched.

Numi tried, and a set of knives fell out.

"I think you're supposed to catch them, but the important thing is that you have some out now." Rukhar said. "Try throwing them at the targets over there."

Numi trotted over. She flung one knife as hard as she could. It missed by a long shot.

"Aw..." She said. "I'll never be as good as Kumi..."

"You gotta practice." Rukhar said. "I've been doing archery since I was born and I'm still not a pro."

Numi nodded, and tried again. The same result occurred.

"Try more wrist, and less arm." Rukhar said.

He tried to demonstrate. Numi got the idea, mostly.

She again tried, and still missed. But this time the knife got to the targets instead of hitting the floor.

"Oh!" She said. "I think that's better?"

Rukhar patted her head. "Yes. Much better."

Numi used her last knife, and 3 more sets from the glove. When she tried to get more, they didn't come out.

"Huh? Is it broken?" She asked.

"I think it's empty." Rukhar said. "I know metal users can make more, but I think you gotta put those knives back."

The pair gathered all 16 knives. Numi had managed to land a couple glancing hits on the target, and she was very happy about it. They put all the knives back into the glove.

"So what did you think?" Rukhar asked Numi.

"It's very cool! But also very hard." Numi said.

"You'll get better." Rukhar said encouragingly. "So do you want to take an actual class to get better? I can't teach you much myself. And I think we all know leaving you with Jay is a horrible idea."

"Yeah! He's too mean." Numi said. "I wanna be cool like Kumi!"

"I'll take that as yes. Let's go then, the registration desk is a bit aways." Rukhar picked Numi up.

She crawled right back into his bag.

"Why are you so insistent on hiding in the bag?" Rukhar asked.

"There's a lot of scary people." Numi said simply.

"They aren't so bad when you get to know them." Rukhar said.

"Scary!" Numi said strongly.

"You'll be in a class with lots of them." Rukhar said.

"Them I'll just stay away." Numi said. "The lizard man scared me."

"Oh, that was just a Naga. They look scary, but they don't bite." Rukhar said.

"No!" Numi said. "He had lots and lots of sharp things in his mouth!"

"A dragonkin? They are pretty relaxed." Rukhar said. "They won't hurt you. Besides, you're too cute for someone in here to be mean to."

Numi giggled, a little shyly. "Ok..." She said, peeking back out of the bag. "But I'm staying in here."

"Close enough." Rukhar said, as he departed for registration.
