Exotic Meals
When Rukhar and Numi got back to the room, it was about dinner time. Though Callie wasn't supposed to be moving too much, she could not sit still for very long. She had piled a few books and things for Numi to sit on at the table, instead of putting her in a baby seat.
Rukhar came through the door with Numi holding onto his head. "Hi!" Numi said.
Callie was lying down again. She waved, and got up. "Welcome back. It's dinner time."
"Ooh! What is there to eat?" Numi went to look in the fridge. Rukhar opened it for her.
"There's nothing in here?" Numi was not expecting that.
"We gotta get our food over here." Callie called Numi over. She picked her up.
"Is this the order tablet? How does it work?" Numi asked.
Callie poked it a few times, and a casserole came out.
"Just like that." She said.
Numi looked at the tablet. She poked it, and all of the words changed into things she could read.
"Wow!" She said. She poked around, and eventually found seafood.
The list was huge. She looked around, but didn't see anything she was used to. She touched a button at random, and after a few moments a big, messy pile appeared.
Numi looked at it distastefully. "What is this?"
Callie touched the menu to change it back to her language. Then she opened the meal specifics.
"It's called Marine Meatloaf." She said. "It's made of Toxifish, Tigerfish, Angelfish, and Mudskippers layered in between Kelp, and covered in abyssal salt and diluted barbeque sauce... Wow, that's complicated."
"What are those? I've never heard of them before..." Numi gazed at her 'meal' in wonder.
Rukhar spoke up from across tho room.
"Tigerfish are a common fish. They are orange, big, angry, and spiky. Toxifish are normally poisonous and venomous, but cooking them kills the poison and makes it taste good. Angelfish probably live in your world even. They are a common Saltwater fish that look pretty and are tall and thin. Mudskippers are crazy fish that can walk on land for a short while. The rest is everyday stuff, from what Callie tells me."
Numi sniffed the meatloaf. It smelled amazing.
"I guess I can try it..." She said.
Rukhar got his food and everyone sat down.
Numi eagerly bit into her meatloaf. The flavor was... Hard to describe. It was as if someone made seawater into a gel, but not chewy, and it had every smell from Crusty Sean's truck somehow turned into a solid object.
Numi wasn't quite sure what to say, or think. She was pretty sure she liked it, but at the same time it tasted funny.
Rukhar noticed her highly confused face.
"Bit hard to figure out?" He chuckled a little.
Numi's expression was an affirmation of this.
"It tastes so... Something." She said.
"Yeah. The complicated dishes can be unique tasting." Callie said, happily eating her casserole.
"Can I have a drink?" Numi asked, slowly eating another bite.
Callie got up and went back to the tablet. "What do you want?"
"Inkmelon juice please!" Numi said.
Callie looked. She looked hard, but to no avail. "It's not on the menu... Sorry."
Numi pouted. "Aww..."
"Maybe another juice?" Callie offered.
"Like what?" Numi said, still sad.
"Like.... Ah! How about raspberry juice?" Callie looked through the menu. "Or pomegranate juice? It's the same color as you."
"I don't know what those are either..." Numi said.
"Hmm... What fruits do you know?" Callie asked.
"Inkmelon, strawberry, and that's about it." Numi said.
"A strawberry smoothie perhaps?" Callie asked.
"Isn't a smoothie a cold drink?" Numi asked.
"Yes." Callie said. "Why?"
"Chilly...." Numi said. "But ok."
Callie got a strawberry smoothie. She also grabbed dragonfruit juice for herself and a diluted stamina elixer for Rukhar.
"Here you go!" She put the smoothie in front of Numi. It was huge.
"Wow! So big..." Numi looked, stary eyed, at the cup. It was half as tall as she was.
"Cal, I think the cup's too big for her." Rukhar whispered.
"Oh! My bad, sorry." Callie said. She ran back to the tablet to get a sippy cup, and took the lid off. Then she put some smoothie into it.
"Here, try this." She told Numi. Numi sipped the smoothie. It was so much better than the strawberries back home.
"Yummy!" She said.
She quickly ate the rest of her food, and was sipping on her large supply of smoothie while Callie and Rukhar finished eating.
"That was good." She said. She was very full. Even the smallest portion of meatloaf was more than she ever ate before.
"I think it's about bed time for you." Rukhar said.
"Nuh-uh! I go to bed at 9!" Numi protested.
Rukhar checked his headgear's clock. 8:45.
"Yeah, it's almost 9, and you've got another class tomorrow." Rukhar said. Then he realized. "Where will she sleep?"
Callie looked around. They weren't going to put her in a box, and they didn't have a proper sleeping bag for her, or a pillow for that matter.
"We'll have to get her a bed tomorrow." Callie said. "She can stay in our bed tonight."
"You sure?" Rukhar said.
"Yes." Callie said, picking Numi up. "It's the only comfortable place to sleep right now."
"Alright..." Rukhar said. "But you're gonna have to calm down on the rolling around in your sleep."
"I'll try." Callie said.
They got into bed, and Rukhar turned off the lights with his headgear.
Numi immediately snuggled up to the pillow.
"Good night." Callie said.
"Night." Rukhar replied.
Numi said nothing. She was already asleep.
The next morning.
Callie awoke to an odd poking sensation on her tentacle. She removed the blanket to see Numi wrapped around it, nibbling on it gently in her sleep.
"Hmm." Callie said, without moving. "This is happening."
Rukhar had also just woken up, and saw. A smirk appeared on his face.
He went to the table and got the camera drone. Then he took a picture.
"Really?" Callie smiled. "Gonna send it to everyone?"
"Just Marie." Rukhar said.
Marie was still out cold in her room.
"Well, we don't have to wake her up, but it is about breakfast time." Rukhar said.
"I can't really eat lying down." Callie said.
"Then we gotta wake her up. Sly said she's 14, so she shouldn't start fussing too much at least." Rukhar said.
Callie slowly shifted into a sitting position. Numi did not wake up.
"So far so good. But it kinda hurts." Callie said.
She turned, and tried to gently pry her tentacle out of Numi's mouth. Her efforts were in vain. Numi had too strong of a grip for her to remove gently. However, Numi did wake up from her attempts.
"Huh..." Numi said, still tired. "Too early Kumi..." Her grip loosened, and she stopped nibbling. Callie rubbed her tentacle.
She got out of bed without fully waking Numi up.
"What for breakfast..." She mumbled.
Rukhar tossed her a sugarberry crepe.
"Here." He said. "One of your favorites."
Callie caught it.
"Thanks." She said.
They ate quietly for a bit, before shuffling could be heard from the bed.
"Sounds like Numi is up." Rukhar said.
"Why's my bed so big..." She mumbled. Eventually, she got to the edge of it, and rolled off. She expected a small fall. It was not a small fall.
"Owie..." She said. Then she looked around properly. "It wasn't a dream?"
"Nope." Said Rukhar. "All real."
Numi got up, and Callie picked her up and put her at the table.
"It's breakfast time." She said. She took off a chunk of her crepe and gave it to Numi.
"Try it." She said. "It's like a sweet, thin pancake."
Numi hesitantly ate it, expecting nothing.
It was amazing.
Numi's eyes sparkled. "So good!" She gobbled the whole thing up and promptly asked for seconds.
Callie gave her another small piece, but she had almost finished by then.
Numi wolfed it down again. Then she started breathing a bit faster.
Rukhar started to leave for his class.
A thump was heard.
Everything seemed to slow down a big, except for Numi.
She began running around at a ridiculous pace, and instantly fell off the chair. But she didn't slow down at all when she hit the ground. She crashed into the table leg, the bed, the walls, Rukhar's armor stand, and kept zipping around the room.
Rukhar heard the racket, and loaded an Ensnaring shot. He took careful aim, and fired.
The vines tripped Numi, and then grabbed her from behind. She was flailing around like a tiny solar system all the while.
Callie picked her up. She was still in sugar rush mode.
"Good thinking Rukhar!" She said.
Numi was slowing down.
"No issue. See you later Cal!" He left, waving Callie and Numi goodbye.
Numi fell asleep. Callie set her on a pillow, that she set on the floor.
"Huh." She said. "So she has sugar rushes. I'll keep that in mind."
She went to the muffin basket.
"But she didn't have one from the chocolate muffin yesterday... Odd."
She took all the strawberry and blueberry muffins out of the basket and put them into the fridge. She left the banana, chocolate, and oat muffins however.
"Just to avoid that. Now I gotta wait for her to wake up again, so I can get her a bed."
She checked her storage unit. "Yep, 22300 credits. That should get a tiny bed. If it can't, I'll just wait for Rukhar, or ask 3."
With that note, she sat on the bed, and relaxed for a bit. She changed into her armor, and folded her night clothes up, and put them on the end of the bed.
"Ready to start the day!" She said proudly to herself.
