Unsatisfied
As the elevator door slid shut Lukas felt his entire body freeze. No pulse. He had nearly jumped out of the elevator at the thought, but decided against it. Anything that might make him seem connected to Mathias would tip him off to the assistant. Until all of the sub-15th floor scientists were in custody, he didn't feel comfortable with them knowing that he was the snitch. They did threaten his brother after all.
Begining to freak out, Lukas closed his eyes for a moment and let out a deep sigh, hoping the officer was mistaken. He calmed for a moment, trying to imagine all the scenarios in which the officer could have been wrong. As he relaxed, the door to the elevator opened to reveal the lobby, which was now bustling with police officers and employees, standing in shock as they watched other scientists getting dragged out of the building. The officer that was in the elevator suddenly took them both by the shoulder and pushed them into the lobby, heading towards the door. Out of the corner of his eye he saw the secretary staring at him, wide-eyed and obviously confused. Lukas avoided eye contact and proceeded to look forward.
Ahead of them were some officers dragging some people out of the building who he recognized and didn't know had passes to the lower floors. It wasn't until they were outside, heading towards police vans filled with handcuffed scientists that he spotted the chief's bald head shining in the sun. The two locked eyes and the man grimaced at him for a moment before realizing that Lukas was also handcuffed. A look of confusion spread across the man's face as Lukas was shoved into the back of a police van with the assistant next to him. Maybe he wouldn't be suspected of being a snitch after all.
An excrutiating 5 minutes of being placed and strapped into a seat and then another 20 minutes of waiting for other scientists to be placed in the back of the van, they were finally off to the police headquarters for questioning.
Upon arrival, each person in the back of the van was taken out one by one, with Lukas being the last to get out. He was itching to go, as the entire time his mind had been on Mathias. He was the one person Lukas really wanted to see at that moment. He was glad the operation went successfully, but he didn't care unless every last person in the facility had been saved. Especially Mathias.
When he was finally out of the van, an officer he hadn't seen before walked him into the building with a hand on his shoulder. As he was led in, he noticed his coworkers lined up, ready to start the booking process. A lot of them looked panicked, others dead inside. Expecting to join them, Lukas was surprised to find his officer roughly place his hand on the back of Lukas's neck and force him into the building, quite violently pushing him past the line of scientists and down a corridor. Upon turning into an office, the man let go of him.
Lukas, thoroughly confused, looked up at the man with a furrowed brow as they stood in this empty yet nicely furnished office. The officer chuckled and placed a hand on the back of his own neck, obviously feeling uncomfortable.
"Sorry about the roughhousing- Detective Nilssen told me to make sure it looked like you were in serious trouble. She didn't want your coworkers to find out you were the rat" he apologized as he reached for the keys on his belt.
"Oh- that's alright" Lukas let out as the man unlocked his cuffs and let him free. Lukas immediately rubbed his wrists, which now had red marks on them from the cuffs. "These things are uncomfortable."
"Well they're not made for comfort" the officer shot back with a smile. Lukas would've politely smiled back if he weren't so uncomfortable and confused. He wasn't so used to being out of the loop. He had so many questions. Where were the human experiments? What was happening back at the lab? Were all these scientists going to get tried? Where was Mathias?
"I'm sorry- but is there any way you could tell me where the captives are that you found at the lab? I- I need to know" he asked the officer, practically begging at this point.
"I'm afraid I don't know. I was only tasked with transportation of arrestees. I think you'll be speaking to Nilssen soon so she will probably fill you in. But for now you have to stay put- we don't know if there will be any people on the outside trying to harm you" the man replied, looking sympathetic as he stood in the doorway.
"Thanks" Lukas uttered, extremely unsatisfied with his answer.
"In the meantime- do you want a cookie? Or some water?" he questioned.
"Some water would be great- thanks" Lukas responded, not really thirsty but wanting to be alone for a moment to process what had just happened. The officer turned quickly and left the office, softly closing the door before he sped off down the corridor.
Lukas clenched his teeth and balled his fists before letting out a deep breath, practically stomping around the small office in an attempt to sort out the thoughts running through his mind. Was Mathias dead? If he was- was any of this worth it? Lukas slapped himself at the thought. Of course it was worth it! There were more people in there, being experimented on. Although he knew he had just saved a ton of people from the sickest form of human torture, Lukas couldn't stop thinking about one of those people- Mathias. He couldn't feel satisfied with the work he had done until he knew the Dane was safe and sound.
He needed to talk to Nilssen. She was the mastermind of the operation anyway, she'd have all the intelligence. He'd have to ask the officer when he returned from his water run. Relaxing his extremely tense body, Lukas decided to have a seat in the leather chair that was tucked into the desk of the office. Setting his head down on the wooden desk's smooth surface, Lukas felt a strong headache settling in. Too much sensory overload for one day.
