Undercover

I made some adjustments to this chapter so that the story would be a little more interesting and flow a little better. If you already read it yesterday I suggest reading it again because the ending has changed a bit. Thank you for reading!

The next day, Lukas headed to work with a small camera hidden in his belt buckle. He was going to end this once and for all. He had spent the night taking off Feliks' work and deciding on the execution of his plan. He was running on four hours of sleep when he finally pedaled his way to work.

Upon arrival he was informed he would be working on the 4th floor. Surprised and mildly frustrated, Lukas headed down to the fourth floor with a grimace on his face. How was he supposed to get footage of the 16th floor if he were stuck running gel electrophoresis tests on insignificant organisms. He hadn't been put on such a simple experiment in months, so he assumed they were doing this on purpose. They were definitely on his trail.

He wasted the first couple hours of his day micro-pipetting rat DNA into wells before it was finally lunch time. His original plan was to head to the police station at lunch, but now that he had no footage, he knew he'd have to come up with something a little different. Instead of heading off to grab a quick bite like he usually did, Lukas decided on a little trip to the 16th floor.

Lukas approached the elevator nervously, hoping that no one questioned his whereabouts during lunch. Luckily, when the doors lurched open he found that the elevator was empty. Sliding in, Lukas pressed the button to the 16th floor and hoped that anyone working had already headed off to eat.

Upon arriving on the floor he noticed it was dark, similarly to the first time he had stepped inside. Although nervous, he quickly flicked the lightswitch to the side of the elevator to reveal Mathias on the lab table as he had been the first time Lukas had been there. It was perfect. The police couldn't deny the fact that there was a man strapped to an operating table in front of him.

Lukas approached the table and noticed Mathias was extremely pale. Nervous, he lifted his fingers to the Dane's pulse to check that he was still alive. Exhaling in a sigh of relief, Lukas noted his heart rate on his phone, adding it to the collection he had taken while Mathias had been hiding at his house.

Figuring he had gotten enough footage of Mathias, Lukas headed over to the computer and lowered it so that it was at waist height. He wanted to make sure that the camera could catch the words on the screen. Lukas swiped his card in the computer and quickly skimmed through the files, only pausing to let the camera focus in on the words containing the procedures for certain experiments.

He then pulled the computer screen up in order to do some snooping of his own. He wanted to see what they had been doing to Mathias in the past couple days. Upon reading, he cringed. Injecting him with varying drugs before monitoring his sleep patterns seemed to be the bulk of what had occured the past couple days. The opioids explained why Mathias' skin looked like it hadn't seen the light of day in years.

Lukas continued to snoop until he heard some rustling coming from behind him. Mathias was waking up. Quick on his feet, Lukas sped over to the table as Mathias wrestled with the wrist cuffs. It took him a few seconds before he slowly opened his eyes, scrunching his face at the bright light before he finally adjusted to the brightness.

"HEY- YOU ASSHOLES- I SWEAR TO-" Mathias began to yell before realizing who was hovering above him. "Lukas-"

"Hey- I'm going to get you out of here soon, I promise" Lukas said, smiley slightly in an attempt to comfort the confined man. Mathias smiled back, entirely faithful that Lukas would come through.

"Pinky promise?" Mathias joked, eliciting an eye roll from Lukas.

Although feeling stupid, Lukas linked his pinky finger with Mathias's, which was awkwardly positioned near the table where his wrists were cuffed. "Pinky promise", he stated. Mathias beamed. Lukas frowned as he noticed how incredibly weak Mathias looked.

"What's wrong?" Mathias asked, looking worried as Lukas furrowed his brows and examined Mathias's face.

"They're killing you" Lukas uttered in disgust, "on purpose."

Mathias's jaw tensed as Lukas ran a hand down Mathias's arm before resting on the pulse. It was far too slow for someone who was awake and healthy. Lukas couldn't believe the monsters he was working with.

"Don't worry though- I'm heading to the police as soon as I get out of work" Lukas reassured, realizing he had probably made Mathias far more nervous than he should have been.

"Well- thank you. I'd give you a hug if I weren't strapped down to this table" Mathias joked, letting out a chuckle. Lukas smirked, surprised at how lighthearted the Dane was acting. For some reason, even though incredibly weak, the man could still light up a room with his charm. If Lukas were in this situation, he wasn't so sure he'd be so positive.

"I'm just warning you- even though you're getting out of this mess... that doesn't mean it's going to be easy. The effects of their experiments on your body have taken a toll- and you're most likely going to be put into rehabilit-"Lukas began before realizing Mathias's eyes were slowly closing.

Mathias let out a pitiful "See ya" before slipping back into unconsciousness. Lukas bit his lip and softly ran his hand through Mathias's wild hair. It seemed duller than usual. The typical golden locks had faded into a dull beige.

After spending a few moments making sure the room was exactly how he had left it, Lukas strode back into the elevator and headed back upstairs. After washing his hands in the bathroom  on the lobby floor, Lukas headed out to lunch with confidence, knowing he had gotten the exact footage he was looking for.

As soon as 5 o'clock rolled around, Lukas couldn't contain his excitement. It was finally time for him to get Mathias out. In an attempt to not cause suspicion, Lukas headed back to his apartment first. When he arrived he took the camera out of his belt buckle and slid it into his satchel, which he planned on bringing to the police station. Instead of getting in full drag this time he figured a flyer looking for a lost wallet would suffice for any employees that he might run into on the way to the station. That way, if he were caught, he could just claim that he was in the police station because he needed to retrieve the wallet that he had lost.

Luckily, he didn't run into anyone on his way to the station. He strode into the statement confidently, asking for Decetive Nilsson by person this time. The receptionist recognized him, and quickly led him back to the detective's  office he had sat in a few days prior.

It was a few minutes until she arrived, holding a coffee cup and struggling to hold onto a stack of papers that were loosely organized in her arms. She sat down with a sigh and set down all her things before looking up at Lukas with a furrowed brow. "You again?"

"I have footage that is more than enough you need for probable cause" Lukas stated, "You need to get a warrant. There are lives at stake."

"Okay enough with the dramatics-" she said, holding her hands up, "Just show me the video."

Lukas quiclky dug through his pocket and took out the camera before grabbing the SD card and loading the file onto the detective's computer. He scrubbed through the unimportant parts until reaching the elevator and sat down as he waited for the detective to be done watching the video.

A few minutes later, the woman looked at him with an astonished expression on her face. "This is more than enough. I'll be requesting a warrant immediately."

"Thank you-" Lukas responded, relieved that he was finally done with this nonsense.

"We'll probably conduct a search and seizure tomorrow during the workday" she stated, "I suggest you go into work in order to avoid suspicion. I wouldn't want you to risk being found out as a snitch"

Lukas frowned. He hadn't realized the repercussions of being a whistleblower. He wanted to be as far away from the lab as possible when they raided it, but soon realized that this situation was far bigger than he realized.

"I can get you a police escort back to your apartment from the back of the station in case you feel uncomfortable strolling out of the station without a disguise" she said with a wink, smirking as she recalled Lukas arriving as a woman the day prior.

"Can I make a call before I go?" Lukas asked, fearful that he was being tracked. He didn't want the people watching him to see that he had sent a message from iniside the station.

"Of course" the detective said, "but make it quick."

Lukas nodded and headed off towards the lobby. He had one more thing to do, and that was to make a call to his brother. He wasn't going to let Emil become collateral in the little game that these scientists were playing.
