Searching

The nurse came back with a list of unidentified patients, which Lukas scanned as quickly as possible. Unfortunately, in Norway, there were many white, blond men with blue eyes. The only thing distinguishing the 3 unidentified patients were their blood type. Luckily, Lukas knew from working in the lab that Mathias was a universal donor.

Pointing to the O- on the chart, Lukas grinned. "That's him- that's Mathias!" he spoke, looking over at the nurse, who was slightly nervous because of the risk assosciated with leaking private information.

"I'll enter his name into the system and add you to the list of visitors" she replied, smiling as she realized the impact she had made.

"Thank you so much- I know this is against the rules so I'm sorry" Lukas spoke.

"It's really alright- I got into this job to help people. I want you to find your husband" she said as she typed his name into the file.

"My husb?-" Lukas began before shutting his mouth. "Yes- I- I need to know that he is okay."

She flashed a soft smile as she continued staring at the monitor. Lukas stood at the desk, lightly tapping his fingers on the surface as he impatiently watched her type a few words into the computer. "You're all set to visit. He's in the general medicine unit. Room 65 on the 2nd floor. West wing" she spoke.

"And this is the East wing?" he asked, eliciting a nod from the nurse. He gave a quick wave before quickly walking towards the main corridor of the emergency unit. "Thank you so much for the help" he called out as he sped up a bit, leaving the desk behind him in haste.

The hospital reminded him of the laboratory, with never-ending corridors reeking of sterilizing chemicals and blinding white lights illuminating the bright white linoleum floors. Upon reaching a hallway signifying the direction towards the west wing, Lukas picked up his pace. He didn't want to seem too eager, as that would've alarmed hospital security, but he also really wanted to see Mathias. He made a promise that he was going to get him out of the lab completely unharmed. He wasn't one for breaking promises.

Lukas continued his stroll down another long hallway, passing doctors, nurses, and patients as he practically flew through the central building of the hospital. Although sure he was nearing the entrance to the west wing, the central corridors seemed to be set up in a jumbled mess. He didn't know where to head next. Spotting a desk to his left labelled "Oncology unit", Lukas strolled up and asked a man at the front desk which corridor was best to take to get to the west wing.

"Oh fuck off mate!" the man replied, chuckling as he returned to the computer he had been staring at a moment prior. Lukas furrowed his brow in confusion and turned away from the desk, not knowing exactly how he could have warranted that response. It took him a few seconds of utter bewilderment to realize he was still wearing his lab coat. He looked like a doctor. The man probably thought he was trying to be funny.

Too awkward to try to explain himself, Lukas strode in another direction and tried to look for a sign towards the west wing. No luck. He was starting to become irritable.

Deciding he wasn't willing to walk around this confusing hospital any longer, Lukas walked up to a random nurse and tapped them on the shoulder. "I don't work here- do you know which corridor leads to the west wing? I'm trying to-"

"That one" they replied curtly, seeming slightly annoyed that Lukas had interrupted them. The Norwegian gave a thankful nod before heading towards the entrance. He practically ran down the hallway until he was greeted by "West Wing" written in huge letters above the doorway to the west lobby.

His heart racing a bit faster, Lukas shoved the doors in front of him and entered the lobby, immediately rushing towards the silver elevators towards the far wall of the lobby. Upon entering the elevator, Lukas quickly pressed the button and rode up one floor.

Lukas strode over to the waiting room desk on the second floor breathing slightly heavier than usual. He had just walked across the entire hospital looking for this ward. "Hi I'm here to visit Mathias Kohler. I believe he is in room 65."

"One moment sir- i don't believe we have a patient of that name," the secretary began before quickly typing his name into the keyboard "Oh- my mistake. Yes, he should be in room 65."

"Thanks" Lukas said with a curt smile, glad he had met such a kind nurse at the entrance of the east wing. Without her help Mathias would have never been in the system. He was Danish after all, and had no family over here to even help identify him. He would've remained an Ola Nordmann until he woke up.

Lukas rushed down the hallway without a nurse to escort him, too worried about the Dane to care about seeming normal at this point in time. He reached door 65 after a minute of walking, quickly rushing in to see how Mathias was doing.

Not wanting to disturb the peace, Lukas pulled back a curtain in the entrance to reveal Mathias, his face pale and his eyelids closed, laying in the bed before him. His eyes immediately bolted to the heart monitor, which showed a slow yet steady heart rate. Lukas felt his eyes water for a moment, the wave of relief far too strong for his body to resist. He was so unbelievably relieved.

Grabbing a chair from the corner of the room, Lukas pulled up beside Mathias and examined his face. His skin had a blue tint, and his eyes seemed hollow, leading Lukas to believe that the past couple hours hadn't been too good to him. Although looking weak, his hair still maintained its shine, the golden locks messily splayed across the pillow, giving the Dane the freshly-electrocuted look that Lukas so confusingly adored.

Lukas could hardly believe the Dane was sitting in front of him right now, unrestrained. It felt like ages since they escaped the lab. He had almost gotten used to seeing Mathias in that metallic room, being pricked and prodded for the fantasy of some freak scientists. Lukas slid his hand from the railing of the bed to the sheets, moving his way to Mathias's wrist.

He knew the heart monitor was functioning, but he wanted to know for himself that this entire endeavor was worth it, that Mathias was safe and sound and alive and well. Turning the Dane's arm, Lukas put his index and middle fingers up to his wrist, checking the pulse. He let out a soft chuckle, still in disbelief. The soft beating of the man's pulse against his fingers was almost euphoric. He sat still for a moment, admiring the signal of life before snaking his hand down and locking his pinky finger with Mathias's.

Lukas was never one to break the sanctity of a pinky promise.
