A Statement
Lukas arrived at the lab just in time for the assistant to begin writing down measurements and numbers for the experiment. Lukas hadn't been told what exactly the specific experiment was for the day, so he sat and watched and did as he was told until the work day was finally over.
After being released from his duties, Lukas decided to go back home before going to the police. His first attempt at contacting the police was a failure, so he knew this time he needed to sneak around. Preferably with a disguise. Although embarrassing if caught, Lukas knew disguising himself was the only way to get to the police station without being intercepted by a coworker. Luckily, his downstairs neighbor Feliks had a side-job as a drag queen, and had drunkenly offered Lukas an opportunity to dress up whenever he wanted. Lukas had very adamantly rejected the offer, but now he desperately needed a disguise. Feliks was his only option.
After dropping his stuff off in his apartment, Lukas went downstairs and knocked on Feliks' door. Lukas awkwardly hovered in the hallway as he heard shuffling come from within the apartment. "Be right there!" he called out. A few seconds later, the door flung open to reveal Feliks, who was loosening his tie. He was still wearing his work attire. Lukas suddenly remembered that Feliks worked for an IT company. His day job and night jobs could not be any more different.
"Lukas! To what do I owe the pleasure?" Feliks asked.
"I have a bit of a weird request" Lukas began.
"Ooo- I already love this" Feliks cooed, "come on in."
Lukas followed Feliks into his living room, where there were dozens of copies of French and Italian vogue strewn across the coffee table. He seemed to be researching something. There were also a few sketchbooks sitting open on the couch. Feliks quickly grabbed the notebooks and placed them on the table with the magazines. The two sat as Feliks excitedly waited for Lukas to tell him what was going on. Feliks' eyes were pracically twinkling in excitement.
"I need you to disguise me" Lukas spoke, cringing slightly as Feliks beamed.
"Disguise as in- put you in drag?" Feliks asked, his voice filled with excitement.
"Uh- sort of" Lukas replied, eliciting an enthusiastic screech from the polish man.
"I thought you'd never ask!" Feliks exclaimed, "Why do you suddenly need a disguise?"
"It's an extremely long story with legal implications. Long story short is that I need to get to the police station without being seen, but I'm pretty sure I'm being watched at all times. There is probably someone watching this building as we speak" Lukas replied seriously. Luckily, Feliks wasn't the type to ask questions when he knew something serious was going on.
"You came to the right queen" Feliks stated, grabbing Lukas' wrist as he dragged him into his bedroom. Lukas watched on as Feliks opened his closet to reveal a myriad of clothing and wigs. "What are we going for?"
"Totally unrecognizable" Lukas replied. Feliks nodded and proceeded to flutter back and forth in his closet as he decided what he was going to do. After a few minutes of deliberation, Feliks handed Lukas a pile of clothing to put on. "We're going for a more pedestrian look. You don't want to stand out too much."
Lukas nodded and proceeded to figure out what he was wearing. He was handed a navy shift dress, which he slipped over his slim frame with ease. "That dress is perfect for you, as it hides the fact that you don't have wide hips" Feliks stated. Lukas wasn't sure whether or not Feliks was throwing shade.
Lukas then struggled to put on the tights he was given to hide the fact that his legs weren't shaved. After what seemed like hours of simply trying to pull the tights up, Lukas slipped his feet into a pair of tall brown boots, which hit right below his knees. Feliks excitedly clapped before handing him a trench coat to hide his shoulders.
"Looking fishy~" Feliks sang. Lukas furrowed his brow.
"Fishy?" he questioned, looking down as his dress for any clue as to what he meant by 'fishy'.
"Oh- like- you just look really believable and feminine" Feliks explained, excitedly looking at Lukas in the mirror with a proud smile. Lukas let out a weak smile. He felt like he just looked like a man in a dress. "Now- let's get you into hair and makeup."
Lukas' jaw tightened as Feliks led him over towards his vanity. Feliks stood behind Lukas and sat him down in a chair in front of the mirror. "Now- loosen up Lukas, you're way too tense for this" Feliks scolded. Lukas let out a deep breath and calmed down and Feliks picked a few makeup items out of his drawer. "Luckily you have a very feminine face already- so we won't need to do that much in terms of makeup" Feliks said. Lukas nodded and looked in the mirror. This was going to be an adventure.
30 minutes later they were finished with makeup, and Lukas looked in the mirror in awe. He really did look like a woman. All they had to do now was apply the wig. Feliks left for a moment and returned with a dark brown wig. He first tucked Lukas' hair under a wig cap before placing the wig atop his head and gluing it in place. He then fluffed it up a little and smiled. "Voilà!" Feliks yelled, proudly admiring his work as Lukas looked in the mirror at a person he didn't even recognize.
He lightly took a strand of hair in his hand as he looked at himself in the mirror. "I look- like a totally different person" Lukas exclaimed, "thank you so much."
"It's my pleasure. I've been wanting to do this since I met you! You'd make an amazing drag queen" Feliks said with a wink. Lukas rolled his eyes. Feliks was always trying to get him to dress up.
"I have to get going- but thank you- seriously. I owe you one" Lukas thanked, standing from the chair confidently. Feliks smiled and nodded.
"Anytime" he said with another wink, watching on as Lukas marched out of the room. Lukas left the apartment and headed back up the stairs towards his own home, hoping he wouldn't run into any other tenants on his way there. Once he got to his apartment he headed into his room, where he checked himself out for another moment. He looked quite believable.
Knowing he didn't have much time to spare, he headed to his kitchen and slipped out the window onto the fire escape, making sure no one was watching before proceeding down the stairs. Lukas snuck down the stairs until he reached the dumpster behind the building. He opened the lid and shut it as if he were simply a tenant taking out the trash before he stepped onto the sidewalk, ready to report the lab to the police.
As he walked down the sidewalk he grew anxious. He felt like people were going to recognize that he was a man, but he didn't get a single stare. Everyone he passed ignored him as if he were another woman simply walking down the street. He was even catcalled as he passed a bus stop. He was tempted to open his mouth and surprise the catcaller but decided against it in case someone from the lab was near.
Lukas arrived at the police station without a single issue. He was surprised that it had actually worked. The only issue now was talking to the police and explaining why he was dressed as a woman without sounding crazy.
Upon approaching the front desk, Lukas tried as best as possible to raise the pitch of his voice before requesting to meet with a detective or officer to discuss an important issue. The man at the desk didn't question it, and proceeded to ask a few questions before guiding Lukas to an detective's office. "Detective Nilsson will be with you shortly" he stated with a smile, gesturing for Lukas to sit down in a chair in front of the detective's desk.
He waited a few moments before a short, blonde woman walked through the door and sat down at the desk with an exasperated sigh. "This better not be a waste of my time" she exclaimed, looking down at Lukas like a scornful mother.
"I-" Lukas began, feeling nervous as she glared at him "Well- First thing I need to say is that I'm not a woman." The detective's eyebrows suddenly raised at the voice coming out of Lukas' body.
"Continue-" she commanded, suddenly rebounding from Lukas' reveal. She'd been in stranger situations before.
"There's something sinister going on at the Slecht laboratory. I work there and I know that they have been experimenting on humans" Lukas revealed. The detective bit her bottom lip and furrowed her brows.
"And why should I believe you? I don't usually get useful tips from men in wigs" the detective replied condescendingly.
"I can show you my credentials- you seriously need to shut it down. It's not right and there are people suffering" Lukas stated, trying to remain as serious as possible.
"You don't have any proof. For all I know you're just a crazy man off the street wasting my time" she spoke. "Get me evidence. Otherwise I can do nothing for you."
"But- these people are dangerous. I wouldn't have come here in a wig if I wasn't serious. I could get killed for snitching on them" he pleaded.
"Without probable cause, I can't get a warrant. I need something else in order for me to take this even remotely seriously. I have other cases to be solving. I don't have time for a pranks" she said sternly. Lukas couldn't tell if she believed him or not. He was feeling hopeless.
"What do you want me to do?" Lukas asked.
"If you could get a picture, video, or some other evidence I would be able to take this case to my team" she replied. Lukas sighed.
"I'll be back tomorrow" Lukas responded, frustrated and angry. Detective Nilssen nodded as Lukas aggressively pushed back his chair and stood up before storming out of the room. Was his statement not probable cause enough? He was starting to lose hope in the justice system. Tomorrow he was going to bring the lab down for good.
