A second knock followed the first.
"What the fuck?" Lukas muttered, wondering who could possibly be at his door so early in the day. He'd typically be at work, so he didn't know why anyone would be visiting. Not wanting to take any chances, he motioned for Mathias to hide.
As Mathias crawled under the Norwegian's bed, Lukas looked through the peephole to see the doorman. Relieved, he let out a sigh and opened the door.
"Mr. Bondevik- a package has arrived for you" the doorman said with a smile, holding a small carboard box out in his hands. Lukas looked down at the box, eyebrow raised, and then back up at the doorman. He was confused. Usually the doorman would call him when the package had arrived and Lukas would run down to get it.
"You couldn't have just left it at the front desk?" Lukas questioned, staring at the man suspiciously. He had never known the doorman to just come up to their appartments unannounced.
"The man told me to bring it up immediately. It's- cold" the man replied, holding it out for Lukas to touch. Lukas furrowed his brow for a moment before realizing he had ordered a vial of ampicillin. Quickly grabbing the box from the man's hands, Lukas shouted a quick "thank you" and shut the door, not wanting the nosy doorman to invite himself inside.
Locking the door, Lukas let out a sigh and headed into the kitchen, where he set down the box. Mathias crawled out from under the bed and strode in behind him, wondering what could possibly be in the box.
"What did you order? Ice cream? I could go for some ice cream-" Mathias blurted, groaning slightly as he remembered the sweet taste of ice cream. Lukas shot him a slightly annoyed glance before grabbing a knife and cutting through the tape on the box.
"I ordered some ampicillin for an experiment I'm working on" Lukas replied, much to the dissapointment of the Dane.
"Can we get ice cream soon though? I can't remember the last time I got ice cream" Mathias asked, eliciting a slight smirk from the Norewegian, who was now observing the oddly unlabeled package.
"Until this witchunt is over, we can't do anything. But I can grab you some gelato on my way back from work tomorrow" Lukas said distractedly, now fiddling with the box as he struggled to get it open. Mathias smiled giddily. It took Lukas a few more seconds before he ripped the lid off the carboard, revealing a metallic box surrounded by styrofoam casing. Lukas had ordered amipicillin vials before, but had never seen them in this packaging.
Confused, Lukas took the chilled metallic box out of the styrofoam and lifted the lid, revealing the blood-stained piece of fabric Lukas had shoved in his pocket when he was "collecting data" from the loading dock.
"Fuck" Lukas muttered, biting down on his lower lip as he realized what he had done.
"What's wrong?" Mathias asked, confused as to what was going on.
"You remember last night when I ripped my shirt to cover your gash? This is the piece of fabric" Lukas admitted, "I tried to hide all of the evidenc we left at the loading dock and I shoved it in my pocket but it must've fallen out."
"That's not good" Mathias stated. Lukas gritted his teeth.
"They know you're here and they know I broke you out. I'm surprised they haven shown up here already" Lukas uttered,.
"If they know I'm here why don't they just take me back? I don't understand why they feel the need to be so dramatic" Mathias asked.
"This is why" Lukas spoke, holding up the white card that had been nestled within the cardboard box. It read:
Lukas,
You and I both know of your involvement in this break-in. Since you and a few others are the only ones who know of the inner workings of our facility, I have not disclosed this information to the others. Since I believe you to be a much younger version of myself I trust that you will return the specimen in the name of science. If you break this trust, I will have no choice but to have you silenced. I know this may sound a little hostile, but I promise that all will be explained in due time. I'll even give you access to every floor in the building. As for now, I need you to return the specimen. You have 6 hours before we come to get you ourselves.
Regards,
Chief
Lukas could not believe his luck. A few hours ago he had been in the clear and the least possible suspect, and now he was fucked. And all because of a piece of fabric. Lukas crumpled the piece of paper in his hand as he closed his eyes and set his forehead down on the counter. As he slouched over onto the counter, Mathias set a hand down on his back.
"What are we going to do?" Mathias questioned.
"Can you please stop talking? I'm trying to think" Lukas shot back rather rudely. Mathias backed up and took his hand off the Norwegian, whose forehead was still pressed to the marble countertop, thinking of a possible way out.
The two sat in silence for a few minutes before Lukas shot up from the counter. He looked over at the Dane with a slightly strained expression. "I have an idea, but I don't think you're going to like it" Lukas spoke, eliciting a curious stare from the Dane. "You're going to have to play along."
Mathias nodded. He would do anything to be free at this point. "I'm going to turn you back into the lab" Lukas said, wincing as he expected a dramatic reaction from Mathias. Mathias simply stood there, exhaling as he waited for Lukas to continue. "If I turn you in and get access to the rest of the lab, I can get pictures, show them to the police, and once they get a warrant they'll search the lab and you'll be free to go."
"How long do you think I'll be in there?" Mathias asked, concerned that he may have to stay longer than anticipated.
"I'm not sure- but I promise I'll get you out as soon as I possibly can" Lukas reassured, looking up at Mathias, who was fiddling with the cuffs on his sweatshirt. The Dane suddenly zoned back into the conversation and held his pinky up to Lukas' face.
"Pinky promise?" he suddenly asked.
"How old are you?" Lukas responded, rolling his eyes slightly as Mathias continued to hold his hand up. When Lukas realized Mathias wasn't going to give it up, he sighed. "Fine. Pinky promise" he mocked, smirking as he locked his pinky with Mathias's.
As soon as they let go, Mathias seemed to cheer up a bit. "So, how are we gonna do this?"
"I can't just walk you in there because then they'll know something is up. If I call the chief in a panic and ask him to come here, he'll think I'm on his side. We just need to make it look like we got into some sort of physical altercation." Lukas explained.
"How are we gonna do that?" Mathias asked curiously.
"You need to punch me in the face" Lukas stated, eliciting a laugh from Mathias. "I'm not kidding." Mathias looked at him like he had ten heads.
"Lukas I'm not punching you in the face!" Mathias exclaimed, still slightly laughing as the Norwegian stood in front of him, serious as ever.
"Would you rather punch me in the face or live the rest of your life in the underground bunker of some sick scientists who have no respect for human life?" Lukas shot back, annoyed at this point. Mathias didn't seem to understand the severity of the situation.
"Can I punch you somewhere else? I don't want to hurt your face its too... I don't know- I just don't want to hit you!" Mathias said loudly, suprising Lukas. Lukas knew that having this conversation wasn't going to get them anywhere, so in an attempt to get it going, Lukas jumped up from his chair and slapped Mathias in the face.
Mathias jumped backwards and grabbed his cheek, feeling the red marks where Lukas's hand had connected with skin. "What the hell, Lukas!" Mathias shouted, backing away as Lukas approached again.
"Hit me" Lukas demanded, inching closer as the Dane continued to back away. Lukas grabbed Mathias's arm and dug his nails into his neck before dragging them down towards his clavicle. Mathias jumped back again and groaned in pain. His neck showed lines where Lukas had dug his nails in, and little hints of blood were starting to trickle out of the scratches.
"HIT ME!" Lukas yelled, holding his fist up in the air. He didn't want to hurt Mathias too much, but he had to hurt him enough for their "fight" to look believable.
"I can't" Mathias shot back, wincing as he watched Lukas tighten the grip of his hand. Lukas was beyond frustrated at this point. Thinking quickly, Lukas tackled Mathias to the ground and wrapped his hands around his neck. Pushing his two thumbs down on his esophagus, Lukas cut off the air to Mathias's lungs. He knew this was the only way he'd get a reaction.
Suddenly, after struggling under Lukas's grip for a few moments, Mathias reached up and punched Lukas square in the face, drawing blood instantly. Lukas grabbed his nose as his eyes began to water. Mathias was breathing heavily as he looked up to find a bloodied, smiling Norwegian straddling his waist.
Blood dripping into his open mouth, Lukas let out a nasally sigh. "Was it really that hard?" Lukas asked, hopping off the Dane as he grabbed a paper towel from the counter. Letting of his nose, Lukas grabbbed a paper towel and ripped it in half before twisting it and shoving two pieces into each of his nostrils.
Lukas made sure to let some blood drip on his apartment floor as Mathias stayed on the ground, clutching his neck as he breathed rapidly. Two red imprints the size of Lukas's thumbs were appearing on the man's throat, and Lukas was beginning to think he did an even better job than anticipated.
Mathias rose from the ground with a concerned look on his face. "What the fuck was that?" Mathias asked.
"I knew you'd punch me if you thought I was going to kill you" Lukas admitted.
"Solid logic" Mathias replied, "Are you alright though?"
"I'm fine" Lukas uttered, taking a sip of water from a water bottle before spitting the excess blood out of his teeth.
"You sure?" Mathias asked worriedly, his brow furrowed as he approached Lukas from across the room. Lukas nodded but Mathias moved closer, lightly lifting the Norwegian's chin with his index finger as he closely examined his nose. Lukas flushed slightly as the Dane got uncomfortably close to his face."It doesn't look broken."
"Great" Lukas replied monotonously, suddenly moving away from Mathias as he regained his composure. "Now I'm going to have to tie you up and call the chief."
Mathias shot him a suggestive glance. "That's a little kinky for a first date" Mathias joked, nearly making Lukas trip over his own feet. "At least buy me dinner first."
Lukas nearly popped a blood vessel. "How about this? I'll buy you dinner when we safely execute this plan. In the meantime you need to stop making insufferable jokes" Lukas replied, surprising Mathias.
"Wait- for real?! Where do you want to go? There's this really cool new restuarant near my apartment that is really cozy and-"
"Sit in that chair and shut up before I change my mind" Lukas demanded, shutting Mathias up before running upstairs and grabbing the spool of string he used for dissections.
When he returned with the string, Mathias was sitting in the chair. The Dane made sure to keep quiet as Lukas tied his ankles to the leg posts and his arms behind the back of the chair. Lukas then ran into his room, grabbed a tie, and wrapped it across Mathias's head in order to cover his mouth.
Lukas reached for the phone and dial's the chief's number. When the voicemail message spoke, Lukas motioned for Mathias to make any form of noise possible.
"Chief- I- I changed my mind. That freak just attacked me! I swear I'll never doubt you again. He's restrained in my kitchen as we speak. Bring everyone you have- I don't have much time before he get's loose!" Lukas yelled into the phone, sounding distressed as Mathias made the sound of muffled screaming in the background. As soon as Lukas hung up the phone the two sighed.
"That should work just fine."
