chapter 1

The end of the world came to a shock for most of us. The year 2064. The year it all began.
Scientists and engineers finally found out a method to make functional  robots that could do almost anything. Including being able to go underwater without getting rusty and breaking down. A lot of people swore the end of mankind with this new technology.
Who would've thought those crazy old coots were right.
It all started with Arnold Jones.
A scientists mad with the world because his partner, Evaline Dunning stole his idea for the robots.
Because he had the original blue prints for the robots and a heart seeking for vengeance, he was able to easily re-program the robots. Instead of robots that helped the humankind like taking out the trash or playing with your kid when you were too lazy to. They were all turned into killing machines, starting to slaughter everything in sight.
All by the command of Mr Jones.
Since they were learning types of robots, they soon figured out that they were more powerful than Arnold. They soon turned on him in a matter of one year, they killed him and moved on to the next victim.
Every army in every place in the world came together to try defeat them. And so, the war began.
They were able to upgrade themselves and they soon made a radioactive nuclear bomb that swept across the whole world. Everything died that day.
Everything but me. The last living organism on earth.
It is now July 15th 2070. Almost five years later.
My name is Mark. I forgot my last name a long time ago.
I was only fifteen when I saw my parents be stripped from their skin by those metal beasts.
The only way I survived was because my mother warned me about the bomb and gave me a gas mask and goggles a day before it happened.
How she predicted that to happen, I will never know.
My home is deep underground in the sewers, where the radioactive air won't reach me.
I've managed to make a small farm of vegetables from the supplies I could grab before it would be covered in the now deadly air.
Mostly potatoes, some beans and pumpkins. Some other food too.
Where I lived resembled that of a small apartment, one bedroom, a kitchen, bathroom and Living room.
I have a nice supply of water that I get from the underground rivers further below.
I looked at myself in the mirror.
Black hair with red on the top and chocolate brown eyes.
I looked a lot like my dad, my mom used to say.

I wasn't the best looking, but I wasn't the worst.
I grabbed my gas mask and goggles and strapped them securely to my face before heading up the ladder outside my home out into the now dead world.
The ladder led to a dark alleyway where I couldn't be seen.
After the war the robots made a thriving community, mimicking the life style the human society had.
I found myself studying them to try understand and maybe find a way to disable them.
Not that it would make a difference. I mean, what was the last person on earth gonna do with literally nothing entertaining to do on the actual earth.
I heard the distant sound of metal on tar and hid somewhere I couldn't be found. It got closer and closer. It passed the alleyway without sensing my presence.
There where different types of robots, this one I liked to call a berserker. Berserkers roamed the world, looking for old, useful scrapes from buildings and robots corpses that broke down. Taking these scraps to a main factory where they were used to make newer models of robots. Berserkers were huge, dumb hunks of metal that charged at anything that moved.
After a few minutes the clank of metal disappear into the distance and I got out of my hiding spot.
I walked on the mostly demolished sidewalk and looked up at the sky.
It was no more a beautiful blue, but more of a sluggy brown.
The whole world was mostly silent, the kind of silence that made your ears ring.
Looking down from the sky, the ground was even worse.
Debris everywhere as well as old trash was tossed everywhere, making it hard to not make a noise without looking where you step. I came across a fairly stable shopping mall. I went inside and started searching for something useful or atleast entertaining.
I came across a clothing store and went inside. The clothes all looked fairly good to wear, most still in tact.
I grabbed a few pairs of clothes my size and stuffed them in my bag.
Suddenly, I heard a noise at the entrance of the store.
I wasn't alone.
I quickly but silently found a hiding place which was under a receptionists desk. I forced my breathing and heart beat to calm as I tried to listen where the intruder was.
Wait, somethings strange here, what is it.
Then I realised what it was, I couldn't hear any metal steps but instead, those of sneakers squeaking on the floor.
My eyes widened as I realised what it was.
It was then that I heard the thing I haven't heard in five years
"My, it seems I've hit the jackpot haven't I," the irish voice said to himself.
IT WAS ANOTHER HUMAN!
IM NOT ALONE!
I tried crawling around the desk to see if I weren't imagining it. As I was doing that, I bumped a can that was by my hand that I didn't see. I flinched at the sound and heard silence afterwards.
I quickly stood.
Please don't say I scared him off.
I walked to the middle of the store, not seeing anything.
Suddenly, I got grabbed from behind and pushed against the wall. They covered my mouth so I couldn't scream and held a knife to my head.
I looked at what was holding me captive and saw a hooded figure.
"Move and I'll disable you faster than you can shout to your little robot friends," he said in a harsh tone.
I tried speaking but he held onto my mouth. He uncovered my mouth to let me speak, still keeping his hand close if he had to put it back.
"Listen, I'm not a robot, believe me," I say in a raspy voice from not speaking in too long to remember.
"Why the fook should I believe ye huh, for all I know ye could be some new robot they made te look like people," he spat, his Irish accent getting thicker.
"Check for yourself, cut my arm and see what happens," I spat back, to which he pushed me further into the wall, warning me not to get sassy to someone who's holding a knife to your head.
He took the knife away from my head and placed it on my arm. He made a small cut, a few drops of blood forming.
"Bet you a robot can't do that now can it," I say cheekily.
He finally let go of me and stepped a bit away from me.
"S-sorry, it's just been so long since I've seen another human, I kinda got alittle scared," he said rubbing his arm.
"It's ok, I also got alittle scared when I heard a voice, for a moment I thought I was finally going insane," we both chuckled and I looked to him.
Through my goggles I could only see his green hair and the rest was covered with his own mask and goggles.
"I'm Mark by the way," I say outstretching my hand.
"Jack," he says his hand shaking mine.
And I finally felt something I haven't properly felt in years.
Warmth.
