Chapter Three
Nari hated cake. Cake, cupcakes, and brownies had a texture that activated her gag reflex. Regardless, there she sat with three slices of cake on individual saucers waiting fo her to taste them. Her wedding planner went over details with the baker waiting for her to decide which flavor would be selected for the big day; coconut with passion fruit filling, chocolate with raspberry filling, or carrot with cream cheese filling.
It shouldn't be a unilateral decision but she was used to making decisions on her own. Kallen Meyer was a busy man. His agent told her that. Kallen reiterated it when she reminded him of their cake tasting. She knew professional baseball players during the regular season had practices, games, and training but from what she knew of his schedule he had nothing planned. It was why she picked the random Wednesday. He told her something came up. Something so important he couldn't spend twenty minutes choosing a cake with her. A cake for their wedding. This was house hunting and venue picking all over again.
At least his busy schedule had its perks, one of which was a bank account with both of their names and credit cards with no limits since she had to make all the day-to-day decisions allowing him to be the star pitcher for the Denver Eagles. It was a responsibility she took seriously. She took it so seriously that she abandoned her dreams of being a physical therapist even though she had a degree in Sports Medicine, a certification, and hours of training.
"You could've invited your mom to accompany you." Brittany, her wedding planner, said standing by the table with a hand on her waist and a furrow to her brow like a frustrated teacher who gave a lesson to a student that still struggling with an equation. "You shouldn't have to make all these decisions on your own."
"It's fine." Nari shrugged. It had been five years. She was used to it or she convinced herself she was used to it. Once she got over leaving the comfort of her family and friends in Houston and planting roots in a new state it got easier. She knew the longevity of a pitcher was long and she could sacrifice and postpone her goals to be with the person she loved. It would be paid. She was sure of that.
She wanted what her dad and her mom had. Their love inspired her to leap when he popped the question at her graduation, causing her to throw caution to the wind when he was traded from the San Antonio Sliders. She wanted a partner for life, an unselfish love, a compassionate companion, and a baby or two.
"My mom is busy. The twins start high school, Nick has band camp, and Risa has cheer camp." Nari stuck the disposable fork in the first slice. "I can do what Marie Antoinette ordered."
"Wasn't she referring to bread?" Brittany asked and then flicked her wrist. "It doesn't matter. What will it be?"
Nari chewed, swallowed, and repeated the action two more times. "Chocolate and raspberry. I think the sweet yet tartness will suit the fall theme."
"Logic and taste." Brittany nodded. "I'll let the baker know."
Nari gave her a thumbs up as she gulped water to flood the sweetness from her tongue. If it were habanero and cheddar chips she would let it linger or even a mixed berry tart. As she waited for her planner to return so they could go over what was next on the agenda she pulled her phone out of her purse.
She expected to see a slew of texts. It was normal to have at least seven notifications on her phone at any given point in time with three sisters in their teens, a brother who wanted to follow in the footsteps of his soon-to-be brother-in-law, a dad who wanted to know if she ate, and was home before the sun went down and a mom who she talked to when she needed a sounding board. But the pair of messages on her phone weren't from them. Curiosity prevented her from swiping them away and going on Pinterest and the brief words she read piqued her interest.
Nari didn't hesitate. She tapped on the video. She didn't expect to see titties before noon but her mom told her what happens when you try to make plans. Moaning and skin slapping against skin sounded from the palm of her hand but she was frozen by the images before her. The unknown woman was right. They both knew Kallen. And now Nari knew who the woman was, too. Silent tears glided down her face as she watched her fiance grip the hips of the woman who lived two houses down from them in the gated community he told her she could choose any house she liked.
"Nari!" Brittany shouted, cheeks reddening from the shocked glances of the few people thankfully adults. She snatched the phone from Nari's hand and silenced the device. "What are you watching?"
"The destruction of my life." She wiped the tears away but they were quickly replaced. She grabbed her purse with haste and frantically left the bakery unsure where she was going but knew she wanted to disappear.
