04. Time and Place
FOUR TIME AND PLACE
As it turns out, sticking around to hang around with the football team and drink beer really isn't the most exciting thing Wes could be doing when all of their parents and families are missing. Nothing crazy was happening, just warm beer in everyone's hand and miscellaneous conversation as people milled about. Winona had since gone home and Wes almost wished he had gone with her just because he was bored as hell and nothing on his phone was working so he had no crutch to fall back on.
Daniel was standing next to him saying, "Dude, this shit is weird, I feel like this isn't the right thing to be doing right now. Maybe Cassandra was right, we should have just gone home and dealt with this in the morning."
"Babe, nothing is stopping you from going home," Sahar mused as she picked at her nails absentmindedly. She was never one for drinking, she mainly was just here to keep an eye on the boys for Winona's sake. However, she had her own fair share of troubling party stories. "There's literally no obligation to be here."
"I mean, like, the team is here..." Daniel said with a sigh as he overlooked the field they were standing on in front of the church. Although it was meek, he did sort of have a point considering their team pretty much traveled in a pack -- especially at parties. Wes didn't mind it, but he had felt relatively disconnected from the team ever since the Grizz thing caused such a rift.
The conversation was interrupted by a shout from a member of the aforementioned team, Wes was pretty sure it was Jason, who was yelling, "The fuckin' church is open! Woo!"
Like moths to a flame, everyone chugged their beers and sprinted into the church. Wes didn't know how this would change anything from the current status of this party, but he followed everyone anyway because it was cold out and he could use the change of scenery.
"Babe, wouldn't it be so cool to like fuck in a church?" he overheard Sahar whispering into her boyfriend's ear which caused Wes to internally gag. No one ever wanted to hear about their two best friend's fucking, that was a given.
"Sa, I think that's like... blasphemy," Daniel muttered in return and Wes held in a laugh as his eyes searched for someone to talk to since he was fairly sure his friends were about to leave him in the dust. He couldn't really blame them, he had been like that with someone once, too. He pretended to be completely innocent as Daniel cleared his throat to get Wes' attention and tell him, "Uh, we'll be right back, we're gonna go get more to drink."
Wes didn't comment on the fact that Daniel had just opened another beer, instead he nodded, "Yeah, yeah, see ya in a bit."
He watched them disappear before he sighed, observing as the crowd became more and more chaotic with each passing moment. Normally he was a partier -- he ate this shit up, but the impending doom of their situation kept looming above his head like a raincloud about to rip open a treacherous storm. Something just didn't feel quite right.
"I'm sorry about my friend on the bus earlier," a soft voice interrupted his thoughts as he noticed his infamous ex-girlfriend had taken up the vacancy left by Daniel and Sahar. He instantly wanted to escape, but he knew he had nowhere else to go. "I asked her not to be so rude, but, yeah. That's just kinda how she is."
Wes shrugged as he took a lengthy sip of his drink, hoping that being buzzed would make ths conversation more bearable, "Don't worry about it. It's not really words that hurt me, mainly actions. You would know that."
"Wes," the girl began, but her sentence drifted off as it was clear she had nowhere to go from there. She knew what she did and Wes knew what she did; there was nothing else to discuss. "Yeah, yeah, I suppose I would know that. Thanks for the reminder."
"Any time," the boy sneered with a sarcastic smile as he chugged the rest of his drink, crushing it with his hand when he was done before letting it clatter to the floor. Littering wasn't his style, but there wasn't a trash can in sight so he'd just make sure to be apart of whatever clean up team that was handling this shit storm tomorrow morning. He walked away from Amaya in search of another drink because all of a sudden he had the urge to get absolutely wasted because speaking to Amaya gave him a headache. He hated her, he knew this, but he was also pretty sure he was still in love with her and the contradictions were too much for him to handle. Therefore, alcohol was the solution.
However, because he could never know peace, Amaya followed him, saying, "Wes, no, let's talk about this! I can't stand knowing that you hate me."
"Maybe you shouldn't have cheated on me then! Would you look at that?" the boy answered with sarcasm dripping heavy from his voice, running over to the cooler and grabbing another beer. "I really don't think this is the time or place to be having this conversation."
"Then when is it? When is it time to have this conversation because I'm sick of this," Amaya's voice was rougher now, a sign she was getting angry. The girl had always been gentle, but when she was pissed, it was like a whole different person. Wes had always liked that about her -- that she wasn't afraid to hold her own or call people out on their bullshit. Now, it was one of the things he hated most about her.
"Oh, I know! Literally never," he shouted over the loud music. He wanted her to hear him loud and clear, but clearly their argument had drawn the eyes of some of their classmates and that was something he didn't want to deal with. The current setting reminded him far too much of the argument that had ended their whole relationship when she had admitted to his face to hooking up with Grizz. He shivered at the thought of how much that night had broken him. It wasn't fair for him to lose his girlfriend and best friend in one night and that wasn't something he wanted to be remembering right now -- not with so many other things already going on.
"Wes--"
"Don't 'Wes' me! You can call me Wesley, in fact, you lost nickname privileges!" Wes exclaimed, "I don't owe you forgiveness, I don't even owe you the time of day. It's been a year, stop trying to make it up to me because this is never happening again."
Amaya scoffed, rolling her eyes as she crossed her arms. "I don't want you back, I just want you to stop hating me for shit you don't even understand. Seriously, would it kill you to just forgive and forget for once in your life?"
"You don't get to tell me what to do anymore, Maya," Wes stepped closer to her, towering over her. He couldn't tell if he wanted to yell at her more or if he wanted to kiss her and it was driving him crazy. He needed to put a stop to this and he knew it. "This conversation is over. Don't bring this shit up again."
This time when he walked away, she didn't follow. He breathed a sigh of relief as he took the drink that was in his hand and chugged the rest of it. With that, he found his way into the middle of the crowd and let himself turn his brain off and just exist. There was nothing he wanted more than to forget -- and that was exactly what he was going to do.
