Chapter 5

Nakaria p.o.v.

I wanted to gasp, but then I steadied myself. My heart did a backflip. And it's not the kind of thing you feel when you see a cute boy. It's when you know your horrifying dad is here.

Ugh.

A chilling wind even more colder than the Arctic swept through the room, which was basically impossible. I felt goosebumps on my arm. A wave of fear washed over me, paralyzing me. Well, not entirely. It only allowed me to do one thing: Kneel.

I turned around, facing the figure. I fell to one knee, staring at the floor. I couldn't see the person, but I already knew who it was. There was only one person in the world that could do all those things. "Novisor." I muttered, "Dad."

*********************************************************************

You know, the kneeling thing was totally NOT my idea. It was Father's. That was the one and only rule he gave to me: I had to kneel whenever he appeared. (Not like I had a choice, with the magic and all that...)

You might think that's easy. Seems way better than your video game rules or something like that, right? Well, nooo. Imagine if you're watching television, and then your dad comes into the living room, and then you have to kneel and miss your favourite show.

Or maybe it's Parent's Day. Or whatever your school calls it. Your dad comes into the classroom. You have to kneel in front of the WHOLE SCHOOL. And become the laughing stock of your class. Great. That's when you really start to hate your dad's rules. You complain to him? Your dad's like," Hey, at least I didn't give you a curfew or something."

Then you really wish you had normal parents.

See?

"Oh, stand up." My dad suddenly said, interrupting my thoughts. He had... a kind of pleased tone. Is he in a good mood? I slowly stood up, meeting his 'gaze' . "Hi, Dad." I said, trying to hide the un-enthusiasm.

He looked the same as before. He had the same black ghostly body, which flickered between human and ghost. The human form was a dark haired man, with pale skin. He looked like me in his human form, and he also had been described as a vampire. The common thing these two forms shared was that they both had no eyes/visor, and a bloody grin. Those two things about my dad were the worst. They gave anyone that saw them nightmares. I myself had too, once.

However, he seemed a bit tired. His ghost looked more transparent, and he didn't look as menacing as before. For once, I was able to look at him without flinching. He seemed happy though, his grin wider and bloodier than ever. I could see his white, sharp teeth. Had he just massacred a spaceship or something?

"Why are you down here, Nakaria? I thought I made myself clear: This is out of bounds." Novisor said coldly. I sucked in a breath, and immediately regretted it. The air here was really cold.

I had totally forgotten the other rule: No going down to the dungeon, and definitely no messing around with Novisor's 'specimens'.

"I'm sorry, alright? I just wanted to explore." I told him about the gust of wind and the door opening. "Ah, yes. That was me."

Novisor said, "I guess I can't blame you for curiosity." He then scowled a little,"Still, you're lucky I'm in a good mood today."

"Why?" I blurted out. "Why are you in a good mood?" "Ah, you see, Nakaria..." my father replied, " It all has to do with this boy here." "Who? Why?" I asked, curious.

"Oh, he's the chosen one to defeat me. Or maybe the next Novisor. But I've got him handled." My dad replied smoothly.

"WHAT?!" My jaw dropped open. What on earth? "I thought I was the heir!" I subconsciously yelled, totally ignoring the 'chosen one to defeat me' part. "Nakaria, don't shout!" My dad scolded, sending off another cold draft of wind. "Yes, but apparently..." He glanced at the crewmate once more.

I didn't know what to feel. I mean, I was shocked, I felt furious, sure. My future was all planned out. I needn't worry about anything, just being the heir and go wreak some havoc among the crewmates. And then, this boy just barged in, and now he's the heir. What about me? Knowing Dad, he'd probably just adopt him as a son, and forget about me.

At the same time, I felt...kinda...attracted to the crewmate. Maybe it was fascination for the first crewmate I've ever seen, or I felt impressive that he, an 'ordinary' boy, could be the heir of Novisor. I mean, I'm Novisor's daughter, so me being the next Novisor is kinda normal. But him...I don't even know his name!

I looked at the crewmate once more, worried.

Father seemed to sense my uneasiness, and he said," Oh, Nakaria, don't be jealous." "Me? Jealous? N-no. I'm just..." I immediately went red, and quickly denied it. "I thought I was the heir, that's all."

"You'll still be the heir. At least, 99%." He scowled at the boy. "He's... unstable. Unless he can prove himself to be a good next Novisor, I'm not going to let a mere mortal be my heir." Novisor said. "I mean, his name is Player! Player, for god's sake."

Okay, I had to admit that name was pretty stupid. "But-but if he's-" I said, still worried. Novisor scoffed," You used to have combat training with me. Him? Hasn't even won a single game." Novisor morphed back into his human form and clapped me on the shoulder.

Ow.

"Don't worry." Dad said. I managed a smile. "What are you going to do with him, though?" I asked. "I mean, how do you 'prove yourself to be a good next heir'?"

Novisor grinned in a way that sent goosebumps from my arms to the very bottom of my toes. He licked his lips and walked over to the crewmate- I mean, Player. A small blade appeared in his hand. I sucked in a breath. Anything to do with knives doesn't really make me think of good things in my book.

Father bent down over the crewmate, the knife poised over his stomach...

With a swift motion, Novisor stabbed Player deep into his stomach. I grimaced as blood spattered on the walls, followed by the ear-splitting scream that erupted from Player's lips. My dad looked maniacal, his hands red and bloody, grinning. Blood ran freely from the wound in Player's stomach, drenching the floor with red wetness. I suddenly wanted to puke.

Player gasped, trying to sit up but failed, as he clenched his stomach. He tried to cover the hole in his stomach, tears pooling from his brown eyes, clearly in much pain. His tears mixed with the blood on the ground, as he yet again let out another yell from pain. His eyes glanced at his surroundings, and a look of horror showed on his face, before it was quickly replaced by a look of pain.

My dad was still standing next to the crewmate, satisfied at his yells of pain and pleading. I couldn't believe it. Yes, he could be the one to kill my father, but no one should be treated this way, even a villian. And here was my dad doing all this.

I looked at Dad. He sighed and forcefully wrenched the knife out of Player's gut. I winced as Player let out another scream of pain as the knife was pulled out. Gods, that must've hurt a lot.

Dad flinched too, probably from the noise, and he waved his hand in the air, putting Player back into a deep sleep to shut him up. "See?" Dad muttered,"Futile. That almost broke my eardrums, and I don't have any." "Dad, you can't hear without eardrums."

"Whatever. A foolish heir of the Novisor line, no doubt." Dad said. "You would be a much, much better one than him." To be honest, I probably would have screamed out loud in pain too, if I were the crewmate.

Father looked at me. "Really." He said quietly. Oh, shoot. I forgot he could read minds... at least, mine. He raised the bloody knife (Wow, kinda weird to say that-) and aimed it at me. I stumbled back, scared by the motion. Was he actually-ACTUALLY going to throw the knife- AND IMPALE ME?! No way, right?

Novisor smirked and threw the knife, with deadly accuracy. I tried to duck but another wave of coldness washed over me, immobilizing me to the spot. Uh oh... I closed my eyes and braced myself for the pain that would come striking me in the chest.

Nothing came. I cautiously opened my eyes, expecting to see blood and gore and... you know, this is making me queasy. Instead, I saw my dad grinning at me and still, the sleeping crewmate. I glanced down and saw the knife lodged in my chest.

After I got over the shock and my mind had processed what was going on, my natural instincts took over(Like any person would) and I quickly pulled out the knife, forgetting that it would hurt, like, A LOT. It was one whole minute after me just standing there, knife in my hand, that I realized I had not felt any pain. Both when the knife had stabbed me AND when I had pulled out the knife. Neither was there any blood.

I looked questioningly at Novisor, a million questions popping up in my mind. "Wha-Uhm-" Novisor smirked again and said,'' You're made out of dark energy. Normal knives like this one-" He walked over and took the knife from my hand. "Can't hurt you. Unless the weapon is made of or infused with dark energy, no matter how many times or how hard the person tries to harm you, not a single drop of blood would be spilled from your body." My dad explained. "That was why I said you would be a much, much, better heir."

I breathed a sigh of relief. Of course. He was a crewmate. I was not. "I am the daughter of Novisor." I reassured myself. "No one is going to take my place." I looked up at my dad and he was smiling, a rare thing that he does. I guess he must be satisfied with me. "Now, Nakaria..."

"Yes?" I said. "Me and...Player have certain... things to do." He grinned, and I fully understood what he meant. (Pssst, it's torture.) "I believe you have spent quite enough time here already. Now that your curiosity is fed, go back up to your room." "But-" I said, wanting to spend more time with my dad. It was rare that we got... family time, if you would call this that. Also, movies were really getting kinda boring. "No buts." said my father firmly.

I sighed. There was no arguing after that. I snapped my fingers and in a blink of an eye, I was back in my bedroom. I flopped down onto the bed, tired. My eyes were closing when the angry growls of my stomach reminded me that-. "Oh yeah, I haven't eaten dinner yet." I said out loud.

Suddenly, a soft knock was heard, coming from the door. I rolled off the bed and walked lazily over to the door. Opening it, I saw Duncan standing outside, holding a plate with my pizza on it. "I believe this is yours, Nakaria, miss." I groaned. "I told you, don't call me that. I absolutely hate it." "Fine. However, you are famished." My stomach agreed with a hungry growl. "Yep." I said. Just looking at the pizza made me drool. Oh god, the melted cheese was just perfect~(NAKARIA, SHARE A SLICE WITH ME-)

A small smile tugged at the corners of Duncan's lips. He presented the pizza to me and said," Eat, as you will need your energy for the combat training we're having tomorrow morning." "What now?"

"Combat training." Duncan repeated.

WHAT?!

"But I haven't had that for years!" I said indignantly. "Master wishes that you will start training again," said Duncan. "Why though?" I asked. All these years, Novisor had never talked about training again, and now he wants to start training once more? How peculiar. "I do not know, but I do believe that it has something to do with the new prisoner." Prisoner... the crewmate? Okay then...

"Okay, where do we train?" "The usual spot." Duncan replied before backing out from my room. "I'll see you there." He shut the door. I heard his footsteps becoming fainter and fainter as I stood there like an idiot. Then my stomach let out an impatient growl. It jolted me out of my thoughts, back to reality.

I sat down and wolfed the pizza down, satisfying my hunger, at the same time processing my thoughts. Today had been such an eventful day. Next thing I knew, the pizza was gone and I was left with a full stomach and an empty plate. Too lazy to walk back down to the kitchen to wash it, I snapped my fingers and the plate disappeared. Suddenly, a wave of drowsiness washed over me. I realized that it was 3:00 in the morning. "Six hours before I go training... better sleep." I muttered to myself, closing my eyes. Almost immediately, I fell asleep.

*********************************************************************

I had the weirdest dream ever. First, I saw nothing but white. Then a beautiful garden came into sight. I couldn't move though, I was stuck to the spot. I saw something red running towards the path that led into the garden in the distance. The figure stopped for two seconds, then he ran towards me. The figure kept looking backwards, as if there was something chasing him. As he came closer, I realized that he was none other than Player, the crewmate whom my dad had captured. What is he doing in my dream?

Player didn't seem to notice me however, and kept running forwards. Oh no, I was going to crash into me if I didn't move this instant! Unfortunately, I still couldn't move, and Player got closer...

The dream shifted right before Player hit me, and I let out a breath of relief. That would've hurt and also would have been really awkward, even if it was only a dream.

I was back in the dungeon where I had first found Player. Why? I had no idea. I tried to move, but like in the garden, I couldn't move an inch. Suddenly, my body jolted forward and my legs started walking, but I wasn't controlling them! It was as if someone had taken control of my body and was moving it.

I started walking straight towards the wall. Oh no, am I going to narrowly miss the wall again and my dream would shift? Why is my dream all about crashing into stuff? Gods...

However, I walked straight through the wall. What? I was confused beyond confusion, but then I saw a long, narrow hallway leading towards what seemed to be a cell. Inside, I saw Player unconscious inside. Oh my god, why are my dreams all about crashing into stuff and Player?

Then I reached forward. I mean, not me, but my body which I couldn't control for a reason. 'I' touched the bars of the cell, and Player disappeared. More questions were appearing in place of my sanity which was slipping away by the second. Everything was so confusing! Why did Player disappear? Why couldn't I move of my own free will? And again, why were my dreams all about the same stuff?

Suddenly, the dungeon faded away and I was left standing in a blank, white, empty void, where my dream had started. I looked around, bewildered. All of a sudden, out of nowhere, my father's voice rang out. No, not voice, but more like a really, really angry scream. It echoed around the void, leaving my ears ringing.

I covered my ears, as the void opened up without warning, and I fell upon a throne. I tried to sit up straight, dazed from the hard fall. I glanced around and realized I was on Novisor's throne! Oh no, he's going to kill me if he ever sees me here! I quickly tried to leave, but something was not letting me. I struggled, but it was like chains were wrapped around me, bounding me to the throne. I looked down, and to my horror, my hands were ghostly claws. Further downwards, I saw a huge crowd of ghosts, all without visors, bowing down to me. What on earth was happening?

I woke abruptly, sweating even though the dream wasn't exactly a nightmare. It had, however, given me an idea. But it was now time to go combat training.
