Chapter 4
I don't know
~
The morning light peeked through the curtains, landing its warm touch on November's cheek. She stirred a bit and slowly opened her eyes the light blinding her a bit. She pulled her blankets over herself and let out a groan. She didn't want to wake up, November sometimes wished that she never would have to wake up again. Not that she wanted to die more like being in a deep sleep forever. November often had thoughts like this, not of the sweet release of death but of odd things. She rolled onto her stomach letting out another groan.
"Still trying to sleep are we?", a voice chimed in, sounding cheery and energetic.
November moved her hand around feeling for her phone and looked at it. She was still on a call with Caspar.
"How can you even be awake at this hour?", she asked in response.
"Oh, you know. Anxiety and a control freak of a mom who always bugs me at the exact time."
"Heh sounds fun. I just wanna sleep but the sun won't let me. Why does it have to be so bright this early?"
"November. . . it's one o'clock you know that right?"
"Yeah, it's Saturday so it's too early."
"What time do you usually wake up?"
"Oh you know five or six"
"A.m.?"
"More like afternoon"
"Oh so that's why you never talk to me in the morning"
"I'm talking to you now aren't I?"
"Yeah. . . so since you're up now. . . do you wanna go get some lunch or breakfast I guess."
"Ha. Oh, you sure as hell know I do Cas. Where do you wanna meet?"
"I was thinking I could pick you up."
"Thanks but sharing a bike with you really messed with my back."
"Who said I was picking you up with my bike?"
"Whatever. Yeah, you can pick me up. I'll be ready in like ten minutes dork"
"Alright see you soon"
November hung up and sat up. The blanket slid off, letting light hit her face. She stretched and got up. She brushed her hair and slipped on some black pants. Soon she made her way quietly to the bathroom and brushed her teeth as well as wash her face. November soon returned to her room and put on a Black Veil Brides shirt and her black Vans. She slipped on her trusty black and grey varsity jacket and headed out. She quietly made her way to the door. She looked over into the living room and saw that her father asleep in his recliner. Once she saw him she bolted to the door and closed it quickly.
She had to cover her eyes as the sun assaulted her eyesight, "It's too bright to be awake. . .", she groaned.
Soon a car pulled up, it was like a van but it wasn't a van. It was sky blue with glossy wood accents. Caspar soon appeared out from the car. "Check it out it's a Ford Country Squire!", he yells proudly.
"Oh wow it looks...looks like something," she said and smiled
"Guess who got me the car."
"The Witch?"
"Nope."
"The ghost that haunts your dreams."
"What? No."
"Hmm... Then I give up. Who gave you the car?"
"It was my dad he sent it here from Indiana."
"Indiana? What kind of weird far away place is that?"
"I don't know it sounds boring though," he smirked and laughed. "Now shut up and get in the car." He joked while getting in the car.
November rolled her eyes and giggled as she got into the car. She looked around in the car and noticed the big back area. "Damn you can live in this car."
"Yea I suppose you can. Why do you want to?"
"Why do you say that?"
"Well, I've noticed you don't like to stay at your house very much. You seem to be anywhere but your house. Well except for yesterday."
"Yeah, well my dad nailed my window shut so I couldn't go out like I usually do."
"Maybe he's worried every night you leave and don't come home."
"No, I think he's worried about something else."
"What else would he be worried about?"
"Oh...nothing. I don't know." she said becoming uncomfortable.
Caspar could sense her uncomfortableness and didn't press her for more. He turned on the radio, "This plays cassettes you wanna take control of the music?" He asked handing her a box of cassettes, some tapes are old classic rock other are more modern indie songs. She picked one labeled 'Nov's Tape'. She stared at it for a bit, confused whether he intentionally put it in there or was it accidental. She shrugged and put it in, the first song that played was 'Hey There Delilah' by Plain White T's. She smiled and relaxed a bit in her seat.
Caspar looks over at her and smiled a bit. He was glad that she was more relaxed now. Soon they arrived at Hal's Diner, Caspar parked his car and stretched a bit before exiting the car and walking over to open her door. November walked out of the car and stretched a bit. He acted even more like a gentleman and opened the diner door for her. November looked at him raising a brow.
Caspar looked at her, "What?"
"Why are you acting like this?"
"I always do this for you."
"Yes but today feels different."
"And you always say that every time."
"But this time is different. The car. The mixtape and your sly smile."
Caspar shrugged her off and led her to their usual table. "Just enjoy the time away from home." he chuckled.
November smirked a bit and sat down. "You paying?" she asked.
Caspar nodded, "Like always. You getting pancakes with bacon and coffee with cream?"
"Ditto." She said forming a finger gun.
"Ditto? What crap did you smoke today?" He joked
"I didn't smoke anything. I just thought I try something new."
"That's not new, it's pretty old."
"Well new to me." she smiled.
"What are you some old soul?"
"Oh, yes very old the 1990s were a tough time."
"Hey I mean the internet was new, the fashion was cringe and you couldn't carry a phone in your hand so yeah I say tough if you're a teenage dirtbag."
"Well, I am just a teenage dirtbag baby."
"Oh I'm baby now am I?" he joked. Caspar just seemed to be in an overall cheery, playful mood.
November blushed a bit, "Um. . . I... You know what I meant you jerk."
Caspar laughed and ruffled her hair. "I joke I joke."
November pouted and rolled her eyes.
Caspar smiled and looked at the menu.
"Why do you look at the menu? You know you're gonna get the same thing every time."
"Well because I like looking like I gonna get something new but then just restoring back to old reliable scrambled eggs and bacon."
"Don't forget the juice."
He chuckled, "Never forget the orange juice."
"Why don't you like coffee?"
"It's not that I don't like it, it's just I like to only drink it for a special occasion."
"This occasion isn't special enough? Going out for food with your best friend and getting a new... well new to you car."
"Huh? You make a very good point, coffee it is then." He said and smiled
November giggled and looked at the mini jukebox on the table. She pulled some nickels out of her pocket and put some in choosing a song. She flip through the slides and found one she liked. Soon 'Heart-shaped Box' by Nirvana started to play. Caspar looked at her and smiled, resting his head in his hand.
"You listen to a lot of old time music."
"Nirvana isn't that old time."
"It's pretty old now." He said.
"Well not old enough to be an oldie but goodie. That's reserved for Mary Wells."
"Whatever you say."
The waiter came by and took their order. The waiter kept looking at November from the corner of his eye. He didn't seem that much older than them, but they never seen him around school either. November looked at Caspar, to her surprise Caspar seemed to be glaring at the guy subtly. Soon the waiter left.
"You seem to be jealous."
"Jealous? Why would I be jealous?"
"Then why glare at the waiter?"
"Are you telling me you like the way he looked at you?"
"Eh," she shrugged, "As long as he wasn't handsy I guess it's fine."
"Well, I didn't like the way he looked at you."
"Someone is jealous."
"I'm not jealous."
"Whatever you say man." She joked and smiled.
After awhile their food arrived and the waiter slipped November his number. Noveber looked at it and blushed a bit, but quickly looked away from it. She just casaully sipped her coffee and started eating her pancakes. Caspar gave the waiter a quick glare.
"You're so jealous."
"I'm not jealous. Why would I be? It's not like we're a couple."
"So then you wouldn't mind me saving his number."
"Dammit."
"Just admit it."
"Yeah you got me I'm jealous I guess."
"Okay. Now shut up and eat your food your eggs are gonna get cold."
Caspar chuckled and ate his food as well. They spent a good two hours in that diner joking around and taking their time to enjoy their food. They even got desert as well. November was eating a cherry pie while Caspar enjoyed the classic apple pie. Once they were all done, Caspar paid for the meal and they head out of the diner towards the car. November walked backwards looking at Caspar. She always enjoyed their time together and wished this day never ended. She didn't want to return home. She never did, she just wanted to be far from that place and being with Caspar was just the cherry on top.
"Where to now?" He asked
"Anywhere but home." November replied as she got into the car.
